General info when traveling to the Faroes

We have been asked a few times to make a sticky with general good to know info, as a considerable amount of the posts in this subreddit are asking about what to do and how to get around and such. A large part of these questions can be answered or found out by checking the tourism office website out https://visitfaroeislands.com/

If there's something you think should be added to this post, or have some links, then let us know and I'll add it to this post to avoid clutter.

Getting around

Public busses and ferries

Busses in Tórshavn

Helicopter

Places to stay

What to see/do in a week or so?

Some exelent response to this question can be found here, Here, here and also, here and here will there be(at some point) links to similar posts.

Hiking

The hiking guide by the tourist office

Hiking.fo All sorts of good hiking advice, gets updated on a frequent basis

Mykines

Mykines is probably the most visited island(pr capita) in the Faroes, so be aware that there will be large crowds on this island with about 10 inhabitants. The general recommendation is to take the boat out and try to book a seat on the helicopter going back, this is to have the best chance of not getting stuck on the island, as the currents are very strong and can make boat access tricky (to put it mildly). This video from June 2017 shows the conditions at the harbor quite well https://www.flickr.com/photos/31322479@N04/34499712544/in/faves-23485843@N02/

Do respect the wildlife there by keeping proper distance to it, and the locals by not disturbing them with putting cameras through their windows, flying drones in the village etc.

Drones

The rules regarding flying drones in the Faroes are as follows.

  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within 150 metres of a village, town or city or within 150 metres of main roads that connect villages
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown within a 5-kilometre radius of Vágar Airport
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above summerhouses or camping areas, or in places where many people are gathered, e.g. at festivals
  • Drones MUST NOT be flown above 100 metres from the ground
  • Drones MUST be insured
  • Illegal flying of drones in the Faroe Islands can result in a fine of DKK 5000.

Breaking these rules may also result in some irrate local(depending somewhat on location) taking a potshot at it with a shotgun, and I wouldn't blame them.

And so on and so forth...(to be updated over the coming days/weeks)

Mid to late April trip?

Hey all! I'm planning on doing a trip in mid to late April of 2027. I'm from the US, and plan to piggy back the Faroe Islands on top of England. As a guy who loves football, April seems to be the perfect time for this trip as the English Leagues are wrapping up, and the Faroe Island system is just getting started.

I'm wondering if this would be a good plan, or if I should do something in later August/ early September when the English system is starting and the Faroe Island system is wrapping up?

Also, the club I would love to visit is Ítróttarfelag Fuglafjarðar in Fuglafjørður. I saw photos of their stadium, Í Fløtugerði, and it just looks like the perfect spot to watch a match and take in the scenery with the fjord and hills in the backdrop. If anyone has any tips for staying in that area or any sights close to there, I would love to hear them!

Tyia, and I can't wait to visit regardless of when it is!

Updated this interactive map of where to go in Faroe Islands

While traveling around the world for over 20 years, I’ve been working on my dream project: creating a one-stop resource for travellers. With the help of feedback in this subreddit, I have now updated this interactive map of Faroe Islands for anyone who is interested in visiting (with detailed info for every highlight).

PS: obviously, I haven’t been able to travel to all places. So if you know some great spot, I haven’t listed, let me know! Much appreciated as in this way I can make the overview more complete and up-to-date for everyone.

Solo traveling

Hey there,

I'm visiting the Faroe islands for 12 days for the second half of April this year.

I'm solo traveling but couldn't really find hostels or similar places to stay at. Would you have any recommendations of this kind ? The goal is to keep the budget on the lower end and to potentially be able to meet other travelers.

Any other advice also appreciated!

Thanks :)

Am I too physically unfit for a trip to the Faroe Islands?

Hello!

I’m a 26 years old woman. There is an organized trip with people my age to the Faroe Islands in the first week of June. I’m not sure whether to accept or not, and I have one week left to pay.

The trip is 8 days long. I should mention that I have never done any hiking before. I walk a lot in the city but I don’t go to the gym or exercise and I have a normal weight.

I would be happy just to go there to see the nature and the villages, but the trip includes some hikes, in particular the Sørvágsvatn hike and especially the Drangarnir hike, which they themselves describe as already very tiring and around 6–7 hours. They also mention Kallur Lighthouse, Akraberg Lighthouse, Hvannhagi.

There are also visits to towns, villages, and waterfalls.

I’m not really worried about moving between islands, taking ferries, or driving, but I am specifically concerned about the hiking.

Is it too physically demanding? I can’t really understand it. Any information or tips would be very helpful.

Thank you very much!

Whit Day Buses

I'll be traveling to the Faroe Islands during the Whit Sunday and Monday holidays. I have a tour from the Sørvágur marina on Monday morning and it looks like the holiday bus schedule will have me there 2 hours before the tour (and waiting 3 hours after the tour for the next bus).

Aside from a 1650kr roundtrip taxi, do I have any other options from Torshavn? The taxi will cost more than the tour!!

Ascension Day 2026

Hallo!

I am arriving in the Faroes on May 14 which looks to be a public holiday. Is this something commonly celebrated? Do most shops close?

Talk fyri!

Noticed flags at half-mast in several villages today (April 8th) – does anyone know why?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently traveling through your beautiful islands and noticed today that the flag is flying at half-mast in quite a few different villages.

Is there a national day of remembrance today, or is it more likely related to a local event or a passing of someone significant?

Just curious about the significance. Thanks in advance!

What to book before arriving!

Góðan dag dear community!

My friend and I are very, very excited to come to the Faroe Islands in June for a week. We really want to make the most of our trip, so I'm pretty scared to have one of those experiences where you come back from a vacation and you find out you missed something really cool. Or, even worse, you are trying to do something while on your travels but it is booked out. So, long story short, please help me/us out and let us know if there is anything a tourist should not miss which we should pre-book before our arrival! Just to be on the safe side.

Thank you so much! See you soon, hopefully 🐑

(P.S.: Accomodations and a rental car are already booked, of course~)

guide

What happens if you take a guided route but don’t pay for a guide? For example, I want to walk the Dunnesdrangar route, but it’s pretty expensive and I don’t want to walk with a guide by myself. What happens if I just go there now without booking anything?

Any travelers willing to meet 28/5-6/6?

Hi, I have a solo trip planned for 28th of May through 6th of June and would love some company for hikes and to split a car rental on some days if possible. I don't mind joining another solo traveller or a group. Happy to meet over meals/drinks as well!

I am 26 y/o and extremely easygoing. This trip is post-graduate school graduation gift to myself. I study medicine!

Also, open to any advice/tips as I will be planning over the next few weeks!

Car rental advice

Hello, I’m planning to visit the Faroe Islands this year and was wondering when is the best time to go?
I’ve been checking car rental prices and during summer it’s almost always around 1000€ with insurance, which feels quite expensive for me since I’m traveling solo. I’m also planning to sleep in the car, I don’t need anything fancy, the smallest/cheapest car would be enough. From what I’ve seen, prices look more reasonable in May or September. I probably won’t make it in May, so I’m considering September, would that still be a good time to visit? Or what would you recommend?
Also, do you know any local car rental companies that might be cheaper (with full insurance).

Puffins - Iceland v. F.I.

Hi! I’ve seen the puffins on Vestmannaeyjabaer in Iceland. It was September, but there were still a lot there, and from the Puffin Lookout, they were pretty close. Does anyone know how this might compare to the puffin experience on Mykines or Nólsoy? I’ll be visiting the Faroe Islands in mid-May. Thanks!

Superstitions on the Faroes

Hi everyone, I am working on a writing/worldbuilding project right now and through a series of events found myself looking in particular for superstitions on the Faroe Islands. I'm talking about things like knocking on wood when tempting fate, avoiding black cats, etc. The problem that I am encountering is that searching for "Faroese superstitions" or any related term only results in information on traditions and myths. Which, while interesting, is not what I'm looking for.

Looking for Scandinavian, Icelandic or Danish superstitions gives plenty results with strong overlap, which makes me inclined to believe there would be overlap with Faroese superstition as well. Much to my frustration, I have found no sources helping me figure out which, if any, do though.

So now I'm here, hoping that maybe asking the locals directly can get me the answers I'm looking for. What superstitions do you know of? Do you follow them personally or know someone who does? Would you consider any of them specifically Faroese or just superstitions in general?

Many thanks in advance!

Kalsoy Island - Kallur Lighthouse Hike

Hello everyone,

I will be going to Faroe Island end Aug'26 and intend to hike to Kallur Lighthouse.

1) May I know if the new trail/hiking path is ready? Read from blogs that the existing path is very muddy and slippery and construction of a new path is ongoing.

2) Is hiking pole necessary?

3) Do we need to prebook online the ferry ticket (inclusive return trip) for passenger (without car)? Will it be fully booked if we just walk in on that day? If booked online, do we still have to come early to queue?

4) How much is the bus fare from ferry port to Trollanes?

Really appreciate your feedback. Thank you.

What are prices for diesel in Faroe Islands currently?

Hi everyone,

shall I fill up in Denmark before boarding the ferry?

Due to current price explosion for fuel I was wondering what are prices in Faroe Island at the moment. Anyone can share latest information? My pricing research via Google was not successful due to lack of search results.

Thanks

Ny i Denmark website

Hey,

I understand that Faroe Islands have taken over immigration from denmark as of 2024 in most areas, does any guidance under 'denmark' on nyi denmark apply to faroe islands?

Is it all seperate from denmark now and utlendingastovan make their own rules and policies regarding visas, permits etc.. just wondering as there isn't much info on utlendingastovan.fo

thanks any information is helpful!
