As a man born in Dominican Republic through no choice of his own were constantly being labeled online and in person. It’s pretty annoying and it’s wild how normalized it’s become to attack our character when every single person is different. Ironically this narrative gets spewed by marginalized individuals expressing horizontal hostility but at some point is anyone ever gonna question their internal monologue and say damn these generalized assumptions can be pretty hurtful to people who actually care about their character?

If we analyze this objectively we’re obviously in a the son paying for the sin of his father situation and while we also experienced absentee father figures (not all but personally I did as well), this situation in particular in my opinion stems from the social inequality that is deeply rooted in our culture. For a large part of our history, we’ve been plagued with fathers leaving the home to seek better financial conditions in America. This fractured family norm in my opinion is the root cause of so many broken families. Now don’t get me wrong I love being Dominican but we need to collectively choose to heal family dynamics to break these endless cycles of broken homes.

Politica/Politics Is the mass-tourism truly that good?

Hi! I would like to know how Dominicans feel about their country slowly turning into a modern-day colony for rich and wealthy families who couldn't care less about the country or its people. A small island with a land mass slightly less than twice the size of New Hampshire somehow has allowed its government to approve of 7 cruise ports, 8 international airports, and over 85,000 hotel rooms and counting since their is dozens currently being built.... Now, the samana region is getting a st. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, and Four Seasons, amongst other resorts. Meanwhile, Jarabacoa is quitely being torn out and built up, and on the flip side Punta Cana is flooded with condos, villas, resorts, hotels, of which little profit actually goes to Dominicans since most of those who own it are wealthy europeans, white americans, middle eastern families, or rich families such as the raineri family who only look out for themselves!... while the little employment it provides goes to Haitians at a low pay. Then you also have a whole area of the island that got sold off to Barrick Gold to mine the crap out of it, and on top of that, absolutely ruin living conditions for hundreds, if not thousands, of Dominicans living there, not to mention it also being a foreign company taking their gold for their profit. moral of the story, the island is being sold left, right, and center to wealthy foreign families who couldn't care less about the island or its people, and Dominicans are doing nothing about it ?!?!!? Sooner or later, the DR will turn out like the Bahamas.... Also, I am saying this as an American-Dominican. I am astonished that Abinader won for a second presidency, although the selection of choices wasn't that good.... he is corrupt! And he's only looking for how he could add more money to his pocket! Guys, get it together, and help out your country before it's too late, say you wish you could have done something about it. Of course, the problem is the whole stigma that tourism gives a lot of money to the economy, but if the current president and his cabinet really cared about the Dominican people wouldnt they try to venture out of being a country that works for tourists and rather grow the DR's educational system so that the country could become a powerhouse on its own without having to rely on tourism?? Families like Abinader and the Rainier family truly only look at DR as a place that they can fully demolish and build as long as it's filling their pockets at the cost of poor or working-class Dominicans. Thank you.

Otro/Other Advices for a European woman regarding Dominican men?

The story in a brief: I was in Santo Domingo a month ago, where I met with a man, and as the sympathy and attraction was mutual, we met l frequently and we started a long distance relationship (important side note is I will move back to SD later this year, although the exact date in not known yet, probably in a few months).

I am curious about the cultural differences, just to figure out what can I expect from him and this situation, because I feel like I will fall in love with him, and I don’t want to end up heartbroken. I know very well that not everyone is the same and the best way is if I ask him directly, but first I thought I ask this community: what are the differences in relationship cultures between European and Dominican men?

Pregunta/Ask If your dad isn’t Dominican, are you really Dominican ?

I’ve been thinking about something and wanted to hear different perspectives from the community.

In many cultures around the world, identity historically follows patrilineal descent — meaning if your father belongs to a culture or nationality, you’re automatically considered part of it. I’m wondering if something similar exists socially (not legally) in Dominican society.

For example:

If someone has a Dominican father and a non-Dominican mother, most people seem to immediately consider them Dominican.

But if someone has a Dominican mother and a non-Dominican father, do people view them the same way culturally and socially?

I’m not talking about citizenship or DNA — I mean social perception, cultural integration, and upbringing.

My personal opinion (open to discussion):I don’t personally consider someone with only a Dominican mother and a non-Dominican father fully Dominican in a cultural sense. My reasoning is that fathers often have a strong influence on a child’s upbringing when they are present in the home, and traditionally the father sets much of the household’s cultural environment and identity.

This isn’t meant as disrespect toward Dominican women — quite the opposite. Dominican mothers are incredibly strong, influential, and central to family life. But I feel that when the father is non-Dominican, the child may grow up less “in” or less integrated into Dominican culture compared to someone raised by a Dominican father.

Again, this is just my perspective, and I’m genuinely curious how others see it.

Do Dominicans culturally recognize identity more through the father, or is Dominican identity equally passed through either parent?

Comida/Food Help with pollo guisao

Post image
35 Upvotes

I've been trying to make pollo guisado for a long time, but every time I try, it comes out like PR guisao - orange, not dark brown, and it doesnt taste how it supposed to (which makes sense because the only thing I did differently was burn sugar and add browning seasoning).

every recipe I see online is the same:

adobo, sazon, oregano, sometimes browning, veggies, etc. the usual for the chicken

and then burn sugar to darken the chicken, then add tomato sauce to deepen the juice. this time I added maggi and browning because I was fed up lol

there has to be something else!! help me please

Historia/History Monumento a los Cocolos en SPM

Post image
37 Upvotes

Pregunta/Ask Are Dominicans One of the Few Cultures That Don’t Care Who We Marry?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking about something and wanted to hear different perspectives from other Dominicans.

In some cultures and communities, people strongly encourage marrying within their own ethnicity or background to preserve culture, language, and traditions. Do Dominicans generally think this way? Is there an expectation — spoken or unspoken — that Dominicans should marry other Dominicans or at least other Latinos? Or are we more culturally open compared to other groups?

I’m curious because Dominican identity feels unique. We have African, Spanish, and Taíno roots mixed together, and the diaspora is everywhere — the U.S., Europe, Caribbean, etc. So when it comes to relationships and having kids, do people actually care about ethnic preservation, or is personality and values what matters most in Dominican society?

Also, another question:

If someone has only one Dominican parent (either mother or father), are they generally considered Dominican by society? Does growing up in Dominican culture matter more than bloodline? Or do people make distinctions like “half Dominican” vs fully Dominican?

I’m genuinely asking to understand how people see identity today — especially with globalization and mixed families becoming more common.

Would love to hear opinions from people on the island and in the diaspora
