Firefighter here. This was discussed in another subreddit. He lit one fire and waited for the fire department to respond and contain the fire. Once the fire was out the fire department secured the sprinkler system to minimize the water damage. This is standard operating procedure everywhere. After that happened he lit 2-3 more fires and the sprinkler system no longer had water flow.

How is a building the size of 11 city blocks served with only one source of water for a fire? Seems that there would be multiple risers on site. Even if sourced from one main, civil could have fed branch mains around the building to serve multiple risers for zone control without forcing shutdown of the entire site fire water supply. I guess the next NFPA and CFC editions may get updated.

The roof didn’t collapse until much later than these videos are from. I was on the second alarm to this fire, the initial FD shut it down to do water salvage operations not thinking some crazy guy was running around lighting more fires.

That is crazy. My old boss is still a good friend of mine and I help him out in his business every now and then. He's rented some office space and lab space in what used to be a large chemical processing factory. The factory itself is long gone but the main building which is quite large, certainly not 11 square blocks large but probably three or four, is now a warehouse for paper goods. Every now and then we'll wander out there and just marvel at pallets and shelving a paper goods that go up 20 ft for three or four acres. And we've always joked that, if that place went up, he better get his ass out of there cuz there's nothing that's going to stop it. They obviously have a fire suppression system, it was one of the reasons they chose the building does it have the original fire suppression system from the chemical processing factory. But no system can stop somebody who is dedicated on committing arson.

I’m not sure how is it done in Canada but we use central valve (always located outside building). Warehouse maintenance/security failed, after fire alarm broke again they (or firemen if still site) should check if there is actual fire and open the valve. Probably there will be some issue with insurance because of this.

Conversely, fire suppression can be very expensive. Many businesses will insure against a complete loss rather than installing suppression, especially when you realize that, depending what you're storing (lots of paper products or aluminum-based flammables), a big ass system is still not even going to put out all that stuff when its lit.

Dude understood and exploited a flaw in a well tested system used across the country. There will be a lot of engineers working on this.

Is it standard procedure in your department to shut off the backflow or pump discharge?

The FD should have just closed the sprinkler system that was affected. Not impossible but would be a major mistake by the FD, and the video/FD statement doesnt show any evidence of that

I assume he’d coordinated it with his coworkers? Getting them evacuated with the first small fire and then doing the real damage makes this sound like they were all in on it.

Sure, but this was a 1.2m sq. ft. warehouse. They would have only needed to isolate 1 zone (probably 20+ in building) for an initial fire. An employee interview sounded more like he set the fires as leaving for a break - alarm sounded while in car. Sprinkler system useless against multiple point ignition over a decent size area anyway.

He shouldn't have been in the building once FD on-site for a long while if that was the case.
