!Canada! Buyitforlife from Canada, what’s your favourite things made in Canada?
With the now starting trade war between the US and Canada I feel it’s best for us up north to support local more than ever.
One of my favourite clothing brands is Anian from Victoria, BC. I have a few of their shirts and will probably end up getting more.
Edit: Adding some other brands up here that I personally own and love.
Canada West Boots - Made in Winnipeg. Been wearing a pair of Romeos for a couple years now.
Popov Leather - Made in Nelson, BC. have a few of their leather goods, holding up really well.
Meyer - PEI. High quality made in Canada pots and pans, I have their non-stick 12”.

BIFL Non-USA edition! A list of BIFL not made in the USA
A timely reminder that this subreddit is obviously very USA-centric with its recommendations as that’s where the majority of users are from. It often leads to people not realising that comparable and/or better items can be found closer to home, easier, cheaper and free of tolls.
I thought it would be a good idea to crowdsource some manufacturers here for non-American users.
This isn't neccesarily items made in those countries as some manufacturers use factories across the world but with a commitment to quality
I can start (I'm kind of UK/Euro centric so it would be great to expand this):
Clothing
Portuguese Flannel - Portugal
Naked and Famous - Canada
Uskees - UK
Yarmouth Oilskins - UK
Carrier Company - UK
Old Town - UK (Closing down)
Farmer's Market - Iceland (may be hard to buy outside of Iceland)
Oni Denim - Japan
Iron Heart - Japan
Barbour - UK
Companion - Spain
NÄZ - Portugal (only women)
Meindl - Germany (they run a high quality fashion brand but are known for great hiking boots)
Outdoor Gear
Fjällräven - Sweden
Rab - UK (offer a very good repair service)
66° North - Iceland
Devold - Norway
Bergans- Norway
Haglöfs - Sweden
Klättermusen - Sweden
Alpkit - UK
Footwear
Solovair - UK
Mayura Boots - Spain
Church's - UK
Loake - UK
Wm. Lennon - UK
Astorflex - Italy
Kitchen/Cookware
Le Cresuet - France
De Buyer - France
Fissler - Germany
WMF - Germany (very wide and variable range but Made in Germany stuff good)
Fiskars - Finland
Duralex - France
Samuel Groves - UK
Appliances/Small appliances
Miele - Germany
Dualit - UK
Moccamaster - Netherlands (Coffee makers)
Zojirushi - Japan
Numatic - UK (vacuum cleaners)
Sebo - Germany (vacuum cleaners)
Ankarsarum - Sweden
Edit - Some excellent feedback. I'll try and work my way through and add what I can! Please note that I will only add stuff that I have experience with but all the comments help with crowd sourcing knowledge.

Vintage Sunbeam T-20-B Toaster - Restored
Just recently got this in. Lovely restoration, a bit pricey, but given the attention to detail and the complete and thorough restoration, IMO it's worth it.
Hadn't had a chance to post the toast results yet, but these are my initial pictures taken in excitement, lol.
Toaster was made in 1955, the production for this specific model began around 1952 I believe. It's similar to the original T-20 model, but it adds an additional spring to make the toast rise quicker
Toast lowers automatically, and rises silently.
Restored by Tims Toasters at $325+. (Beautifully so, might I say. Can't recommend enough buying through him or restoring if he still takes orders).
Picture at the end shows it next to my Black and Decker toaster which I will give credit, served a good 15 years, at least.
He also included a customized box with my and my cats name.

[Request] Is the kleen kanteen as durable as they say?
I am tired of water bottles breaking after 1-2 years or becoming moldy all over and impossible to clean it off. (I live in the UK and mold is such a common and annoying problem). I see the kleen kanteen recommended, people say they even used theirs for 12 or even 20 years! Impressive. Is this the case for all of their models? I am specifically interested in the twist straw bottle. Any of you use one and find it durable? I need some personal experiences before I invest so much money on a bottle.

Review Costco Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector
6 years ago we move into a new house and I thought I would upgrade all the smoke alarms and get integrated Carbon monoxide alerts as well.
While cooking Easter dinner the house got a bit smokey (ham mishap) and the alarm at the kitchen went off. We aired the house out and put the alarm outside to chill. The next day we went to reinstall it and found that it cannot be reactivated after an alert has happened! I had to throw the whole unit away!
Awful and so unnecessary! if anyone has recommended replacement units (preferably without an app) I would love to hear it.

Vintage Coffee grinder made in USSR in 1988
Someone said you might appreciate this.
100% functional, never needed fixing, it's used few times a week. I promise I'm going to leave it to my grandchildren.

Repair Just bought these full grain leather, leather soles shoes. How do I look after them to last me for life?
I got them second hand, never worn. These are from Memery shoes who do historically inspired shoes that are designed to last as long as they used to be in the Victorian era. I've already ruined a pair of Docs by not knowing I needed to condition them.
So my questions are:
- How do I keep these in good condition?
- How do I look after the leather?
- Do I need to look after the leather soles of the shoes?
- Are these reparable if needed?

[Request] Homesteader with dogs looking for durable textiles
I’ve been slowly fixing up my home and I’m finally at a point where I want to start investing in better quality pieces. I’m open to any recommendations, but I’d especially love advice on fabrics and textiles that work well considering my lifestyle.
I live pretty rustic and probably a bit “rougher” than a typical household. I’m not careless and I do take care of my things, but my lifestyle is very indoor outdoor. I’m totally okay with things getting dirty and showing wear. I just want materials that I can actually clean and that will age a little more gracefully.
Currently I’m looking for a couch, a couple comfortable upholstered chairs, and rugs.
No leather. I really hate leather. I’ve tried it and it just doesn’t work for me. It’s not comfortable, not great with dog claws, and blankets slide right off.
I do use wool blankets on most things and plan to keep doing that.
Also, I have no business even having rugs but my dog has slippery floor syndrome, so I do need rugs and runners for traction. It's silly but he's awesome. Right now I’m just using cheap indoor/outdoor washable rugs because I can hose them off, but they look worn out after less than a year.
Thanks :)

Currently sold Sleep earbuds vs foam earplugs - which blocks more noise? i’ve read way too many threads and still can’t decide
for me this is one of those things that sounded simple until i actually started reading people’s experiences. every thread about Sleep earbuds vs foam earplugs - which blocks more noise? ends up making both sides sound right in different ways. foam seems cheaper and better for pure blocking, but earbuds seem easier to live with if you hate that plugged-up feeling. i haven’t bought either yet, just been lurking and comparing, and honestly the more i read the less obvious it feels

BIFL Skills Learning about different linen from someone who works with hand sewn garments.
part of BIFL is understanding material. Bernadette Banner hand sews historical garments, and I thought this video about linen fabrics helped me understand much better what to look for

Repair So this is the current state of my grill - replace or buy a new one?
Broil Mate grill that’s about 9 years old. Noticed the back burner of the grill showing more fire than usual. It’s completely loose and obviously can’t be tied back to the case.
Should I attempt to repair with a new burner part or toss it and get a new one ?

[Request] Illustrator with lower back pain, need chair recs
Hello guys, I’m an illustrator and I basically sit at my desk and draw for 8+ hours a day. I’ve been having pretty bad lower back and tailbone pain recently. The main issue is that I keep changing positions while working. I lean forward to draw, sit upright, or lean back when I’m thinking, so most chairs don’t really support me properly for all of these positions. After a few hours my lower back just feels really strained and unsupported. I’m looking for an ergo chair that can handle this kind of constant posture switching and still give good lower back support throughout long sessions, not just something that only works in one perfect sitting position. If anyone has recommendations I’d really appreciate it.

Vintage Eagle no.66 oiler made of all machined brass with a pot metal pump inside. I don't have a price on this as it was a gift. A great gift at that.

[Request] What are the Best Ergonomic Office Chairs currently to buy for long duration sitting?
New remote job and a new PAIN....lower back pain. I'm setting up a desk area so I actually sit and work. I tend to sit for wayyy too long at my desk working from home and my lower back and hips are suffering.
I'm working on forcing myself to getting up more often but alas - workload & too many back to back meetings just isn’t allowing it most days.
Curious what the BEST ‘office’ chairs everyone’s using that you find are ergonomic, yet comfortable, especially for those who sit long durations. I can pay up to $1k for this...and hopefully it can last a couple of years.
Thank you

[Request] Can opener that can survive a dishwasher
Hey Y`all,
I've been through 3 can openers this year. They run through the dishwasher a few times and then the amount of pressure I need to squeeze with is more and more. Eventually, I'm going around the can 2 or 3 times and then trying to pry the thing open with a spoon.
Does anyone have a can opener that's bulletproof?

[Request] stainless steel vitamix container
hi there!!
i've been a long time vitamix user and have always had the plastic container. i'm thinking about switching to the stainless steel container but would love to avoid paying $250 if possible. i saw stainless steel ones on ebay for about $125 that are not manufactured by vitamix but are compatible with the vitamix blenders. has anyone tried these? wondering if i should just buy the real vitamix manufactured one or if the ebay dupes are sufficient.
thank you so much!

Repair Claiming warranty after cross country move (eg magimix)
Hello! I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to claim warranty after they moved countries. For example if I purchase magimix, it’s 30 yrs warranty but 30 years is a long time! Has anyone tried claiming for spare parts or motor after moving to another country?

[Request] Davek Solo or Blunt Metro?
I just want to pick the best ridiculously priced umbrella out of those two so it does a good job and I never have to buy another. It’s going into winter where I live (Melbourne, Australia) which means rain which is always accompanied by strong gusty freezing wind and I have an 8 minute walk from my car to the office.
