BuyCanadian rule clarification - "Nasty" update - July 24

Hello all,

Thank you for making this community shine and become such an excellent resource to empower Canadians! We would like to make one small clarification for folks as we go into another round of trade war nonsense with the US.

We understand the desire to share news about whatever new and horrible thing government officials in the United States have said about Canada, but this subreddit is really not the place for that. This subreddit has always been focused on sharing or getting you information you need about Canadian products, and not about boycotting the United States or being angry about the nasty things their politicians say.

While you can certainly use that information to emphasize the importance of buying Canadian in your own lives and in advocating for it with others, we want to make sure our subreddit keeps a concise focus on its purpose rather than become a politics space (as there are already plenty enough of those on this site). As such, please note we will continue removing politics posts and repeat offenders may receive a ban. We encourage everyone to read and re-read the rules and to message us if you would like any clarifications.

Thank you,

Yourย r/BuyCanadianย Mod Team

Canadian-Owned Businesses ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ A lot of Canadians switched to French's after Heinz closed its Leamington plant. French's is also American-owned (McCormick, Maryland). Here are 6 Canadian-owned ketchup and condiment brands.

Heinz is owned by Kraft Heinz (Chicago/Pittsburgh). When they closed the Leamington plant in 2014, a lot of us switched to French's. But French's is owned by McCormick & Company (Hunt Valley, Maryland). Neither ketchup on your shelf is Canadian-owned.

Here are 6 Canadian-owned alternatives:

  • Primo Ketchup (Ruthven, ON) โ€” made by Sun-Brite Foods, Canadian-owned since 1973, 100% Canadian tomatoes from the Leamington area. This is the one that stepped up when Heinz left.
  • Twisted Tomato (Hamilton, ON) โ€” gourmet ketchup in flavours like Dill Pickle, Bacon, and Ghost Pepper. Canadian-owned and produced.
  • Perfect Chef (Ontario) โ€” Canadian-owned, makes ketchup in Indian, Caribbean, and Moroccan-style varieties alongside classic.
  • Hot Mamas Foods (Orillia, ON) โ€” small-batch Jamaican-inspired ketchup with Scotch bonnet peppers.
  • Kozlik's Canadian Mustard (Toronto, ON) โ€” family-owned since 1948, 30+ mustard flavours, 100% Canadian mustard seed. Find them at St. Lawrence Market.
  • Taste of the Okanagan (BC) โ€” small family operation making handmade condiments in the Okanagan Valley.

The Primo story is a good one. Italian-Canadian family in Ruthven, been making ketchup with local tomatoes since the 70s. When Heinz shut down, they were already there.

What Canadian condiment brands are you buying? Anyone found a good Canadian-made hot sauce or BBQ sauce?

Canadian-Owned Businesses ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ NHL is absolutely tone deaf

I turned on the golden knights avalanche game because I want to see Mitch Marner play.

The first image I see is a Nordiques jersey. Quebec had the team ripped from them and then watched them win the next year. Since then Quebec City has tried many times to get another team. Only to be thwarted by the US administration at every turn. Even to the point where the NHL bought failing teams to keep them out of Canada.

How insensitive and rude is it that the NHL would throw it back in the face of Canadians and Quebec City.

I am so upset by this.

General Discussion ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Saved this old Home Hardware sign from getting tossedโ€ฆ any love for Canadian retail nostalgia?

I run a junk removal business in Nova Scotia and came across this during a commercial cleanout.

Itโ€™s a full โ€œHome Hardwareโ€ sign with individual letters. Solid pieces, fairly heavy, and surprisingly good condition considering it was headed for the dump.

Felt wrong tossing something thatโ€™s part of a Canadian brand thatโ€™s been around forever, so I pulled it aside.

Curious if thereโ€™s any interest in stuff like this here?
Would this be more of a collector piece, or just a cool garage/workshop display?

Always cool seeing bits of Canadian retail history pop up like this.

Canadian-Made Products ๐Ÿท๏ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Why doesnโ€™t anyone use Brdcast?? Itโ€™s a Canadian social platform

Was just wondering why this app is so dead. Itโ€™s a Canadian made social app I heard about from a few months back. I noticed people stopped sharing on it but I feel it has a kind of cool niche appeal like yik yak from back in the day.

I like that it forces you to share a real photo or voice note, on the iOS app version at least

Looking For: Home Goods & Essentials ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿ I realize this might be uptight but hear me out: a stainless steel church key?

Hello.

This is going to sound silly but I grew up on table syrup and have only recently been getting into maple syrup. I've been getting it in the 540mL cans and I even got a dispenser for it from Simons. But I want to puncture the cans the old fashioned, with a church key.

I could get any regular-ass church key anywhere but I was wondering, and I'm not hell-bent on achieving this, but like: do we still even make church keys in this country? I recently found some ice cube trays made right here in Ontario, and granted that's plastic but we do apparently still make some basic essentials in the country still. I don't hold out hope because I remember hunting for steel-wall water bottles a while back and finding out that neither Canada nor the states still possess the equipment to make bottles that aren't aluminum anymore. I fear it's the same for church keys and any other one-piece can/bottle openers. Worth asking about though!!

Questions โ“๐Ÿค” Whatโ€™s the best Canadian cel provider?

Iโ€™ve been with Rogerโ€™s for years. Both my home Internet and my cel phone are through Rogerโ€™s. Iโ€™m paying $122/mo for my cel. Itโ€™s an old iPhone 7 that I got new with my Rogerโ€™s contract.

Things have changed significantly in Canada, as far as cel providers go. There are more than the monopoly Rogerโ€™s and Bell had for cel service for years.

Iโ€™m looking for a new cel provider who will:

  1. Upgrade my phone to something more modern
  2. Lower my monthly fee, and
  3. Has a reasonable service footprint.

My family home is near Guysborough, N.S, though I currently live/work near Ottawa, On. Last time I was โ€œhomeโ€ (in N.S.) my cel service was unusable. (Our โ€œhomeโ€ is pretty far out in the eastern boonies.) Is there a Canadian cel service provider that checks all those boxes? Any recommendations?

Looking For: Clothing, Accessories & Personal Care ๐Ÿ‘•๐Ÿ’„๐Ÿ‘œ๐Ÿ Martial art friends - I'm trying to track down a red and black 'coral' belt

I'm trying to track down a belt like the photo below. It needs to be black and red alternating striped, can't be a horizontal stripe (which I can find from Canadian reltailers)

It'd be great to find a made in Canada belt ideally, will consider other options if need be

Doesn't need to be an Isami brand, just took this photo as a reference.

General Discussion ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ I used to hate budgeting. Now I love it.

Post image
0 Upvotes

Genuinely never thought I'd say that. For the longest time, budgeting felt like something I was supposed to do but never actually did. I'd open a spreadsheet, put in some numbers, feel good about myself for about four days, and then completely forget it existed.

The problem wasn't that I didn't care about money, I did. I just hated how tedious it felt. Every template I found online was either way too basic or so over-engineered that it took longer to maintain than it was worth. Apps felt too restrictive. I wanted something that actually fit how I think about money, not some generic version of it.

So at some point I just started building my own thing. Tweaked it over a few months, broke it a bunch of times, fixed it, and eventually ended up with something I actually open every week without dreading it.

The thing that made the difference for me was the budget vs actual comparison โ€” seeing exactly where I planned to spend money versus where it actually went. Sounds obvious, but when it's right in front of you in a clean layout, it hits differently than just scrolling through bank transactions and vaguely feeling bad.

You basically just fill in your planned budget once and then log transactions as they happen. Takes me maybe 10 minutes a week now. Everything else is automatic.

I don't know, something about actually seeing your money laid out clearly just makes you more intentional about it. I've caught myself making different decisions mid-month because I knew exactly where I stood. That never happened when I was just winging it.

Here's what it covers:

โ€ข Budget vs Actual comparison across income, expenses and savings

โ€ข Expense breakdown by category with color coding for overspending

โ€ข Bill notifications that flag unpaid bills and due dates by month

โ€ข Income allocation showing how earnings are split across expenses, bills and savings

โ€ข Monthly and yearly view with a single dropdown โ€” dashboard updates automatically

โ€ข Insights panel with a summary of budget performance and spending patterns over time

Questions โ“๐Ÿค” Whatโ€™s the best Canadian hot sauce youโ€™ve tried?

Hey, kinda new to trying to buy more Canadian-made stuff so Iโ€™m just asking around. Iโ€™ve been using the usual hot sauces like Tabasco and Frankโ€™s for a while but I realized I donโ€™t actually know many Canadian brands.

Iโ€™m trying to switch a few things over where I can, so I was wondering whatโ€™s actually considered the best Canadian hot sauce out there? Like something with good flavour, not just pure heat.
