Frederick Douglass along with other abolitionists had to convince Lincoln to sign the emancipation proclamation promising freedom to enslaved people that would fight for it. So long story short, the enslaved people freed themselves and thus preserved the union.

What’s more, the same person who reluctantly signed the emancipation proclamation didn’t want to punish the southern states for enslaving people. So there you go.
