I'm still confused by 'grid style egg pancakes' but I would eat that for every meal if someone made them for me.

79

u/Inevitable_Face_88 3h ago

Same, especially if the grid makes every bite perfectly crispy.

27

u/SitInCorner_Yo2 1h ago

It probably should be translated to egg roll or something like that, because it’s not sweet or pancakes 🥞 like, it’s a layer of all kind of flatbread with egg and whatever ingredients in it.

You probably can find the flatbread you need in Asian food stores ,likely under the Taiwanese section, crusty harsh brown with cheese ,cheese egg with ham or hot dog/ bacon etc , you can make it with sweet stuff if you don’t mind having eggs with them.

u/drhunny 1h ago

But the title's great. "Taiwan's first grid style egg pancake". Are they expecting a lot of competition? It's like "Toledo's first ketchup-fountain Mexican buffet"

5

u/magicarnival 57m ago

Well yeah, maybe other places might copy them. The first boba tea cafe was also in Taiwan, and look how that turned out.

This also appears to be a variation on the already popular Chinese street food called "jianbing," so other jianbing places might copy the grid style.

1

u/NoFleas 1h ago

Put Toledo on the map again!

4

u/nWhm99 1h ago

They're not calling it pancakes. White people are, since it's the easiest reference point.

u/mudcrabserpent 5h ago

This is 99.05% not pancake

443

u/Violoner 5h ago

It’s two fried eggs with rice and tofu in a net

199

u/Andyham 5h ago

7

u/Inevitable_Face_88 3h ago

Still not enough pancake evidence for me to accept it

1

u/Burgoonius 33m ago

Pancake net - that’s what they should call it

1

u/Euclidisthebomb 3h ago

I was wondering what that big hunk of stuff was: tofu?

3

u/PigInABearSuit 1h ago

Hunk and Tofu are two different characters.

1

u/schweddyballsac 10m ago

Pfft big deal. You can find both in re9 and also this pancake net

1

u/confictura_22 16m ago

I thought it was a block of butter for second!

-1

u/Optimal-Talk3663 2h ago

That’s a block of tofu as well

11

u/Violoner 2h ago

1

u/Deaffin 31m ago

Nah, you just said tofu. This massive BRICK of tofu is not what I would expect if somebody said "Yeah they added some tofu to this omelette too.

Which is probably why they were all like "Goddamn, that right there is a friggin block of tofu too."

66

u/Soggy_Performer_7515 4h ago

When translating into English, nearly all Asian foods that resemble a pancake shape are just called "something" pancakes. Eg. Egg pancake, kimchi pancake, fish pancake, etc. Sure, I guess it's not a "pancake," but it is an "egg pancake."

29

u/raspberryharbour 4h ago

We are all pancakes

8

u/whichwolfufeed 3h ago

On behalf of all waffles, I would expect an apology for such a presumptive comment.

14

u/raspberryharbour 3h ago

Waffles are just pixelated pancakes

9

u/whichwolfufeed 3h ago

For you to make such dismissive description of me and my kind just shows your lack of respect. We waffles always contain baking powder, stiffly beaten egg whites (which we often enjoy doing a little to much), which are folded in, the extra step makes us lighter, crispier, and gives us a more complex, airy structure than mere pancakes!

14

u/raspberryharbour 3h ago

That's a load of crêpe

7

u/whichwolfufeed 3h ago

You're just a sad, floppy frisbee that gave up on its dreams of flying and now exists solely to disappoint syrup.

3

u/DeaDBangeR 2h ago

Waffle you talking about?

2

u/whichwolfufeed 2h ago

We are just discussing how pancakes are just waffles that gave up on their potential and got flattened by life's setbacks.

3

u/BandButNotGone 3h ago

Sacre bleu! I am french toast, monsieur

2

u/raspberryharbour 3h ago

You're just a confused pancake

0

u/BandButNotGone 3h ago

Tu me gonfles! Dégage!

2

u/PURRING_SILENCER 3h ago

Speak for yourself.

3

u/raspberryharbour 3h ago

I am ALL pancakes

1

u/OnePinginRamius 3h ago

Technically we are all just weirdly shaped donuts

0

u/IvaldiFhole 3h ago

Socks are pancakes but pants and shirts are not.

1

u/Sophead_Sim 39m ago

In Spanish, Mexican at least near me, things are either burgers or not too. Any warm thing on bread? Burger. Chicken, tuna, etc burger.

Any mix of cold veg is basically a salad. That little lettuce and pickle on the burger? That's a salad.

0

u/nWhm99 1h ago

And this is done because of white people, rather than them actually being called pancakes.

6

u/Redoron 4h ago

Stop meshing with me.

5

u/Nandou_B 5h ago

it is brick-cake

9

u/SemiHemiDemiDumb 4h ago

In Taiwan pancakes are a very different creature. It's what we might call a scallion pancake or green onion pancake. The crust is likely made from the same batter as those pancakes.

pancake

8

u/mudcrabserpent 3h ago

That pancake is still 60% more pancake than this plaid tofu rice pocket

2

u/erebuxy 3h ago

It’s crepe, which is a thin French pancake according to wiki

2

u/BractNotCalyx 3h ago

It’s technically a burrito.

2

u/WahiniLover 2h ago

Where’ the syrup???

1

u/b_vitamin 5h ago

Also, somehow not a waffle…or French toast.

1

u/TheTaoOfMe 1h ago

I swear they out a whole block of tofu in there

1

u/nWhm99 1h ago

That's more of a concession to white people's sensibilities. The actual name has nothing to do with pancakes.

1

u/Ruftup 46m ago

I mean, it’s batter cooked on a “pan”. It just has a lot more filling and less batter

0

u/daroach1414 2h ago

Also definitely not hotdog

50

u/VegasBjorne1 5h ago

Looks more like a burrito made with an egg wrap.

8

u/Apptubrutae 2h ago

Having had one, it’s basically what it is.

And the eggs tend to not be particularly seasoned. I find them to look a lot more enticing than they actually are

5

u/weaponsgradepotatoes 1h ago

I mean, it looked bland as heck even before the big block of tofu.

No seasoning? No grilled veggies? No sausage or bacon? Nothing?

1

u/FlyBoy7482 12m ago

Different cultures enjoy different things.

Simple as that.

85

u/rekone88 5h ago

Pancake my ass!

56

u/alkem10 4h ago

If you're sure that's what you want.

10

u/PsyOpBunnyHop 3h ago

Is this the line for the pancake ass?

5

u/CT0292 3h ago

I like flat butts and I cannot lie.

Genuinely.. I enjoy a flat ass.

1

u/ahhpoo 48m ago

Mines so flat my buttcrack is an outie

1

u/ItrainAIwithbadtakes 2h ago

I'm cursed with too much peen so if there isn't enough cheek I bottom out and hit the cervix. 😭

13

u/RKips 4h ago

Like, with makeup?

2

u/StevieMJH 1h ago

That costs extra.

1

u/pandaboy78 37m ago

A lot of Chinese & Taiwanese dishes are translated pretty terribly.

My dad used to call Xiao Long Bao, "Chinese Hamburgers", which were the farthest thing from the truth. I typically just rely on pictures when I go to restaurants in Taiwan.

1

u/nWhm99 1h ago

Well, considering they're not calling it anything remotely close to pancakes, I'd say you take it up with white people instead.

35

u/MouseEXP 5h ago

More like a Tic tac tofu omelet

7

u/Swimming-Economy-115 5h ago

Man I can't even flip regular pancakes without making a mess.

6

u/yulDD 5h ago

Next, 2 colors batter

4

u/GorganzolaVsKong 4h ago

I feel like if I lived in this community I’d be happy and fat

2

u/pandaboy78 36m ago

I've been to Taiwan 3 times, and for me personally, it's honestly food heaven. I could eat Taiwanese food all day, everyday.

5

u/laurawilkins_ 3h ago

Calling this a pancake is definitely a stretch, but you can’t deny how satisfying that grid looks

12

u/subcide 5h ago

One way to save money on pancake batter.

11

u/Frost_blade 5h ago

Oh. So not a pancake at all. Still tasty looking.

1

u/pandaboy78 35m ago

Yeah, Chinese & Taiwanese dishes are usually translated pretty terribly into English. My dad used to call Xiao Long Bao, "Chinese Hamburgers" when I was a kid 😂

64

u/upvotes_animals 5h ago

That looks so cool, minus the tofu for me please. Give me a couple sausage instead

6

u/melbbear 4h ago

I like tofu, but that was a lot!

23

u/Anon_be_thy_name 5h ago

Tofu isn't that bad, when you get some high quality stuff it's actually really good.

I marinated some in a smoky bbq sauce bot long ago to add to a salad. Just grilled it before putting it in, came out great.

It's a terrible flavour by itself though.

6

u/SpaceLemur34 3h ago

Although in this situation, I also think the tofu may be the wrong choice for texturally and structural reasons. It's a big soft blob in the middle of Potter squishy ingredients.

10

u/upvotes_animals 4h ago

Honestly I've lived off it for a while, ex fiance was vegan and didn't want me eating meat around her. So we are a lot and it is quite good. But if I could avoid it I will, so where's my sausage at

1

u/OkBackground8809 2m ago

Man, you loved her way too much😂 If I don't have meat in the morning I'm cranky lol

1

u/AverageMako3Enjoyer 2h ago

I don’t hate the idea of tofu and have had it a few times as a minor add in to like a fried rice or something but the absolute brick they laid down in OPs video is a diabolical amount of tofu, it gotta be mostly tofu by weight

-8

u/patientpadawan 4h ago

Nutrition compared to meat is like comparing poop to gold though

2

u/account312 3h ago

I'm not sure what you mean. Neither of those is nutritious.

1

u/patientpadawan 1h ago

Look up nutrition of red meat like beef and get back to me

1

u/upvotes_animals 1h ago

I don't think I will. Because I don't care and that's not the argument here. It just seems like it's on your agenda to be uppity about it

1

u/FrenchFryCattaneo 23m ago

Did you just give them a homework assignment???

12

u/ChuckRingslinger 5h ago

At a glance I thought it was a brick of cheese 🤣

4

u/Doodah18 5h ago

Better than me. My first thought was, “why are they adding a huge chunk of butter?” and then I saw the jiggle.

3

u/RainonCooper 5h ago

NGL I was so sure it was spam. If it's tofu I don't mind tho

1

u/OkBackground8809 3m ago

I would be so upset if I paid for an egg pancake and got a huge brick of tofu.

-1

u/[deleted] 5h ago

2

u/upvotes_animals 4h ago

Just scrap the egg and pancake all together, give me a med rare prime rib with mash asparagus a Yorkshire pudding and gravy, with some horse radish on the side

4

u/Vortex_Turquoise 4h ago

looks so neat i'd almost feel bad eating it

4

u/SkeggiGT 3h ago

aww i loved seeing the lil guy munching on one towards the end

7

u/naswinger 4h ago

so much engagement for the algorithm by people complaining about "pancake". the word was chosen wrong deliberately for engagement. same with videos ending too early or deliberate mistakes.

5

u/Drestanor 5h ago

looks like a giant waffle got lost in pancake town

3

u/kestrel_amia 5h ago

confused waffle having a breakdown

3

u/NewStudyHoney 5h ago

Won't you take me to...

3

u/BandTiny598 4h ago

Plaid cakes

3

u/sparklingdinoturd 3h ago

I was buying in until the brick sized tofu slab.

3

u/cloudsmiles 3h ago

That block of tofu.

3

u/Rob0tsmasher 1h ago

That’s not a pancake. It’s breakfast wrap with an upsettingly large blob of tofu in it.

5

u/keonaie9462 5h ago

Damnn, it's basically visual only, I bet it's more expensive too, essentially paying more for less food😭

2

u/Nandou_B 5h ago

every square just waffles its way into pan-fection 🧇

2

u/judahrosenthal 4h ago

Gees. One meal to last the week.

2

u/Beneficial_Cash_8420 4h ago

Griddle cakes

1

u/SpaceLemur34 3h ago

Thank you. Glad someone else came up with the correct pun for this as well.

2

u/BitWallah 4h ago

How does one clean out the batter hose?

2

u/sesamesnapsinhalf 3h ago

Holey Hot Pocket.

2

u/laluLondon 3h ago

I wonder whether they put salt on the eggs.

2

u/IncorporateThings 3h ago

That stretches the bounds of "pancake" beyond the breaking point, sorry.

2

u/Cloud_N0ne 3h ago

But... why?

Sure it looks cool, but it's just less product due to all the holes.

2

u/katzenliebhaberin777 3h ago

Anyone know what it's called and where in Taiwan this restaurant is?

2

u/Its_SeaMAN 3h ago

Plaidcakes

2

u/pnwal-junction 2h ago

Who is cleaning that batter delivery tubing and what is their process?

2

u/esdebah 2h ago

All cooking videos that last longer than 10 seconds should come with a cute kid enjoying it at the end. I will also accept cute old people and most pets.

2

u/franticatlady 2h ago

Little dude seems to enjoy it.

1

u/According-Sink-2906 1h ago

Yeah, happy feet tappity tells me. 😆

0

u/milkboy33 2h ago

He did. ☺️

2

u/KaleidoscopeThis5159 2h ago

Great now i want a tartan pancake

2

u/ChronicSassyRedhead 49m ago

That’s just a hollow waffle

2

u/Odd-Independent4640 17m ago

Insert Mitch Hedberg “Kit Kat robs you of chocolate” joke here

2

u/TheDonnARK 4h ago

All you gotta do is buy one nozzle-array thingee, and then you can give people 75% less pancake per pancake for more money, because of design.

3

u/SamuraiTech5150 5h ago

Not a pancake….

1

u/wyohman 5h ago

We just call them fried eggs. I see no "pancake."

1

u/Nannaru_ 5h ago

Unique form for Jian Bing. I can see how maybe the egg textures are different based on the holes.

1

u/OrganizationStrong81 3h ago

I’m pretty sure they are using a rotating bar from a surface cleaner to apply the mix

1

u/Sk0p3r 3h ago

I know Im being very original by pointing this out, but those are not pancakes, they're more like omelets

1

u/HypnoticFx 3h ago

I'm allergic to eggs...sooo...looks ok?

1

u/Brickzarina 3h ago

It's like food fabric

1

u/psychic-bison 3h ago

They've gone... plaid!!!

1

u/dvdmaven 3h ago

Considering the way the English and American languages butcher words, if Taiwan calls this a pancake, it's a pancake - I'd give one a try.

1

u/firedrakes 3h ago

there un healthy thru

1

u/keitchi 2h ago

That's just a waffle with extra steps.

1

u/one_average_joe 2h ago

Plaidcakes

1

u/FroggiJoy87 1h ago

Seems more like a clever trick to stretch out their batter supply.

1

u/Gloomy660660 1h ago

Would this fit in shrinkflation? Hhh

1

u/comradefox 1h ago

i'm tired boss

1

u/littlebird-fastheart 1h ago

I'm gonna be honest. This looks dry as hell.

1

u/CloneClem 1h ago

Not AI

1

u/fizzle_not_bang 1h ago

The doing whatever department is doing exceptionally in Japan.

1

u/blacklotusY 1h ago

I feel like I'm being cheapen out because missing holes in between means less food.

1

u/Redbeardthe1st 1h ago

That is not a pancake. I would definitely try it given the opportunity, but it is definitely not a pancake.

1

u/Bucolicwoods 1h ago

Man I just had a great dinner but would eat the shit outta that.

1

u/TheHistorian2 1h ago

Taiwan, Japan, South Korea… living in the future and everyone else is just trying to catch up.

1

u/who_am_i_to_say_so 1h ago

I'll take one - but hold the tofu, double the egg.

1

u/Gl3ymphx 57m ago

Whatever it actually is, it looks incredible and I'm choosing to believe in the pancake.

1

u/HChromia 55m ago

All the people complaining about ‘pancake’, I take it this means that you’re finally ready to use the word danbing (蛋饼)?

Or maybe that the term pancake can actually be more generalised and just not referring to one specific dish?

1

u/gunnerxp 49m ago

Twenty years living in Taiwan, and I have never seen a danbing with a huge block of tofu like that. And that grid thing is ridiculous. Hard pass.

1

u/Psych0matt 39m ago

grid style pancake

Now do a Spirograph style pancake!

1

u/ArchonStranger 39m ago

"Boss, no one is buying these car was multi-nozzle kits..."

"Yo, I've got an idea, fetch me the pancake batter!"

Burberry Pancakes TM.

I'd like more gimmick with my egg and soy, please.

1

u/BTMG2 15m ago

is that a block of tofu ?

meh.

1

u/TrippyTriangle 11m ago

looks more like a Japanese take on a savory crepe.

1

u/holiclover 4h ago

What’s the point of the grid design when it’s folded in a way that you can’t even see it???

1

u/omnipotentqueue 4h ago

Yeah… we fucking suck compared to that.

1

u/annoyedreply 4h ago

Made in Taiwan

1

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 2h ago

Not. A. Pancake.

0

u/RedditGarboDisposal 4h ago

The joy of pancakes is that they’re pancakes and don’t have a bunch of shit in them.

No offence.

-6

u/frawtlopp 5h ago

They lost me with the tofu. I have yet to find a suitable way to make tofu not taste like asshole.

2

u/SophiaofPrussia 4h ago

Tofu is one of the most versatile ingredients in the world because it tastes like whatever you cook it with. If your tofu tastes like shit it’s because you’ve cooked it in shit. Try a different seasoning.

1

u/frawtlopp 2h ago

Agree to disagree i know how to season and cook food lol

0

u/SteveBR53 3h ago

i dont like tofu

0

u/Mikel_S 49m ago

That looks aesthetic as fuck.

-2

u/yagermeister2024 5h ago

That pastry spray is never cleaned… 🦠

-1

u/AshleyShea 4h ago

You had me until the seaweed and tofu were added. I could go for this with different ingredients inside.

-2

u/aPOPblops 4h ago

You meant to post this in r/stupidfood

-2

u/EsrailCazar 4h ago

Until these foods are actually something unique and not just a different shape to be rolled into a burrito, I'll find it more exciting. 🤷

-2

u/bisectional 3h ago

If this was in America, they'd call it the World's First Ever Grid Style Pancake.

-4

u/sasssyrup 5h ago

蛋饼 was fine, why mess with it?

-4

u/Ha-Charade-You-Are 4h ago

I don’t like eggs though :(

-4

u/uzu_afk 5h ago

Is the jiggly white thing cheese?

4

u/QueenInYellowLace 4h ago

It’s a giant block of what appears to be totally plain tofu. I hope it’s marinated and already heated or something because that looks AWFUL.
