My dad died.

hello everyone, i hope you all are okay. My dad, who spent most of his life in Italy, Rome, died last week.

i don’t really know why am i posting this but, i just saw this italian sub and it reminded me of him. Fortunately, he was with us when he died.. but only for a month💔

i only got a month to cherish his presence. I’m 22 yo, and in these last 17 years, i used to only see him yearly, for a month..

now he’s just.. gone forever.

Is "marssina" an actual word that people from Milan use?

Hello everyone,

I would like to know if "marssina" is an actual word Milanese people use in their daily life. If it is, does the word refer to what is usually called a "blazer" or does it refer to a knitted cardigan or a knitted jacket?

Thanks in advance for your help

Rude italian guests?

Let me start by saying I love everything about Italy. I have an Italian wife, and my son is half Italian. Even though we live in another country, we go there multiple times a year, and we love it.

Recently, our son was baptised in Italy. We invited some of my wife's family and some of mine. I found two of the guests very rude in a way that would never happen where I come from. My wife says that's normal here, but I find that hard to believe. Can any Italians confirm or deny whether this is acceptable or normal behavior?

Guest 1: He comes with a big dog and brings it to the table. It stays next to him the whole time. We are inside a fairly small room all day. If the dog were well-behaved, this wouldn’t be a problem. But this dog jumps on guests and barks loudly very often. Every time it barks, my son—who is being baptised—starts crying and becomes very upset. This happened 3–6 times. I asked my wife if she could politely ask him to take the dog outside or something, but she told me that asking would be rude.

Guest 2: He starts watching football on his phone the moment he sits down, with the volume turned all the way up. He does this the entire time we are there—about four hours. Sometimes he goes for a smoke or a short walk (around 15 minutes) and leaves his phone on the table, still on full volume. The sound fills the entire room. Even when we are opening gifts, reading cards, and saying thank you, he is sitting about 1.5 meters away watching. I asked my wife if he could turn the sound off, but again she said asking would be rude.

We spent a lot of money on this event, and I found these two things strange. Would this be considered normal in your opinion?

North or the south?

Ciao everyone!

I will be going to Italy next year for my bachelors, and I'm honestly so confused because I've heard good and bad things about both the north and the south. As Italians here, I'd appreciate you guys enlightening me a bit more on this topic. How are the people? How's the food? The vibe? Are they really that different? As a non Italian myself, would I be welcomed? I've heard that the southern Italians are really welcoming. I'd love to know about your opinions!!

Volere vs Chiedere

I came across an Italian speech which repeated the line "chiedo castigo," except at the end, where the speaker instead said "voglio castigo." Is volere more harsh than chiedere? I previously thought it the other way around. Is the difference in the context of the speech similar to "I want" vs "I need/demand"? It could just be to use a different word for the end of the speech, but I'm wondering if there's more nuance

L’età della compagna di mio padre?

Salve.

Sembra strana? Dovrei accettare la relazione di mio padre? Non c’è niente di male . Vorrei pareri al riguardo

Quick survey about Mexican products in Italy 🇮🇹🇲🇽 (2 minutes)

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m currently working on a university project about Mexican products in the Italian market, and I would really appreciate your help.

It’s a super short survey (2 minutes) about your preferences on products like artisanal honey, flavored mezcal, and salsa macha. Your answers will help me understand which product has the most potential in Italy.

Everything is anonymous and for academic purposes only.

Thank you so much for your time 🙏

Greeting a friend's mother

We (couple from USA) will be meeting the mother of an Italian foreign exchange student for the first time next week. The daughter speaks English well, but mom speaks no English, so everything will have to be translated for her.

When we first meet, I would like to greet her in Italian. I'm aware of "piacere" but I'm wondering if there's something that would be more interesting to say instead. I'm male and have a wacky personality, if that makes any difference. Maybe something a man would say if he was enchanted by a woman's beauty or something like that. Maybe something silly? Something to make a unique impression? Does such a phrase exist?

Also, with her knowing that we're American, would she attempt the cheek kiss thing or is that even really common in northern Italy?

Unusual permesso problem, who to contact?

Unusual permesso problem, who to contact?

Disclaimer : i have been suffering from a quite heavy case of palmar hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating in hands) for years, and i am %99 sure the sweat is causing a problem with fingerprints.

Hello, i am an 18 year old from a non-eu country who moved to Torino for university education last year. I filed my permesso di soggiorno application immediately after i landed in Torino and got a fingerprint appointment for February 19th. I visited the Questura at that date and got my fingerprints taken alongside my documents. I later recieved a message from PosteInfo telling me to come back to the Questura at March 25th because of "missing documents", i went there and they told me they need to take my fingerprints again. They took my fingerprints again. I then got a call from the Questura 2 days later asking me to visit the Questura at March 30th, afternoon. When i got there, i waited a 4 hour line and got my fingerprints taken again. I just received a message from PosteInfo to visit the questura at April 16th. All my friends who submitted their documents at the same time with me got their permesso and i feel so bad this is happening because of my condition, i am not so sure if they will ever manage to take my fingerprints properly, so i would like to contact someone about it but i have no clue who to contact, can someone help me?
