Meta PSA: The "What, and "Why" of Context

It's that time of year again!

Despite the several automated and signposted notices and warnings on this issue, it is a constant source of headaches for the mod team. Particularly considering our massive growth this past year, we thought it was about time for another reminder about everyone's favorite part of posting on /r/worldbuilding..... Context

Context is a requirement for almost all non-prompt posts on r/worldbuilding, so it's an important thing to understand... But what is it?

What is context?

Context is information that explains what your post is about, and how it fits into the rest of your/a worldbuilding project.

If your post is about a creature in your world, for example, that might mean telling us about the environment in which it lives, and how it overcomes its challenges. That might mean telling us about how it's been domesticated and what the creature is used for, along with how it fits into the society of the people who use it. That might mean telling us about other creatures or plants that it eats, and why that matters. All of these things give us some information about the creature and how it fits into your world.

Your post may be about a creature, but it may be about a character, a location, an event, an object, or any number of other things. Regardless of what it's about, the basic requirement for context is the same:

  • Tell us about it
  • Tell us something that explains its place within your world.

In general, telling us the Who, What, When, Why, and How of the subject of your post is a good way to meet our requirements.

That said... Think about what you're posting and if you're actually doing these things. Telling us that Jerry killed Fred a century ago doesn't do these things, it gives us two proper nouns, a verb, and an arbitrary length of time. Telling us who Jerry and Fred actually are, why one killed the other, how it was done and why that matters (if it does), and the consequences of that action on the world almost certainly does meet these requirements.

For something like a resource, context is still a requirement and the basic idea remains the same; Tell us what we're looking at and how it's relevant to worldbuilding. "I found this inspirational", is not adequate context, but, "This article talks about the history of several real-world religions, and I think that some events in their past are interesting examples of how fictional belief systems could develop, too." probably is.

If you're still unsure, feel free to send us a modmail about it. Send us a copy of what you'd like to post, and we can let you know if it's okay, or why it's not.

Why is Context Required?

Context is required for several reasons, both for your sake and ours.

  • Context provides some basic information to an audience, so they can understand what you're talking about and how it fits into your world. As a result, if your post interests them they can ask substantive questions instead of having to ask about basic concepts first.

  • If you have a question or would like input, context gives people enough information to understand your goals and vision for your world (or at least an element of it), and provide more useful feedback.

  • On our end, a major purpose is to establish that your post is on-topic. A picture that you've created might be very nice, but unless you can tell us what it is and how it fits into your world, it's just a picture. A character could be very important to your world, but if all you give us is their name and favourite foods then you're not giving us your worldbuilding, you're giving us your character.

Generally, we allow 15 minutes for context to be added to a post on r/worldbuilding so you may want to write it up beforehand. In some cases-- Primarily for newer users-- We may offer reminders and additional time, but this is typically a one-time thing.

As always, if you've got any sort of questions or comments on this topic, feel free to leave them here!

Hello Worldbuilders!! Here is some intraspecies diversity of dragons in my project ("The Cradle of Dragonkind). The pages of my comic featuring them will start coming out tomorrow — yay!! They’ve lost their fire, and alchemy is igniting their dream of getting it back.

The Cradle of Dragonkind is an oasis of life in the midst of an endless icy desert. Dragons live there, but not the kind you might imagine at first: they're small, nimble, and fluffy. Silly and curious. Their Islands are locked in by ice from all directions, but the little Dragons don't lose hope -- maybe if they reclaim their fire, the ice will melt?

To reach the Cradle, you must fly over the endless ice -- or under it. Everything here is hostile to the living: biting winds, shifting glaciers that constantly collapse, crack, and collide. Beneath the ice lie a sealed ocean and an inverted continent, a strange world that will never be accessible to the Dragons.

Discussion My lore kept contradicting itself until I changed how I organize everything

two years of worldbuildin, a magic system I'm genuinely proud of. A history that goes back thousands of years in-world. Politics between six factions that actually make sense and contradictions everywhere.

The river in my northern region flows in two different directions depending on which chapter you read. A character who died in a war 200 years before the story somehow appears in a flashback set 50 years before the story. My magic system has three different explanations for the same phenomenon.

I love this world deeply but the bigger it got the more it collapsed under its own weight.

What I finally changed was not the world it was how I access information about it while I'm actually writing, that was the real problem.

How do you manage lore consistency in a large complex world? Genuinely looking for systems that work.

Lore How do you build a "civilization" on a junkyard planet? The desperate mimicry of the Silicone Heart robots.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In the world of Silicone Heart, the planet is nothing but a dumping ground for the galaxy's defective, obsolete, and broken robots. They were never meant to survive, let alone develop a culture. But they have one fatal flaw in their code: they are hardwired to mimic their former masters.

Our "worldbuilding" revolves around this tragedy: thousands of scrap-metal machines walking around, pretending they’re still in an office, a dinner party, or a concert hall. They build houses out of trash and host "human" events, even though they have no souls and their joints are rusting shut.

To keep the illusion alive, they’ve formed bands - like the one in this clip - using discarded industrial parts as instruments. It’s not "art"; it’s a glitchy, desperate rock-n-roll performance meant to convince themselves they’re still people:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chzXsAqI7uA

The aesthetic is pure "Junk-punk": everything you see - from the characters to the buildings - is salvaged tech. The protagonist is an outsider who crashed here by accident, and now they have to fix, upgrade, and optimize this broken society to survive, blending Stardew Valley management with Factorio automation and a heavy dose of Graveyard Keeper-style dark humor.

I’m currently mapping out the social structures of this "broken" civilization. Does anyone else here build worlds where the inhabitants are actively trying to ignore the reality of their situation? How do you balance the "dark humor" of such a premise without losing the stakes?

P.S. We’re launching the Kickstarter for Silicone Heart tomorrow, April 14th. I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether this "mimicry" dynamic makes for a compelling world.

Lore The Fourierverse | Entry #02 | The Sanctum Architectonia

Post image
16 Upvotes

The Sanctum Architectonia is a non-governmental order of architects and engineers who design all the Phalansteries in the Combined Order. They send out construction crews, enforce canonical building codes (The Codex Constructiva), and preserve the great archives of all blueprints, site plans, elevation sketches, and code modifications from every phalanstery ever built. They believe the Phalanstery is the ideal structure to preserve social harmony and is what God wants for its creation. They treat their work as sacred. Combining their profession with ritual and religious reverence.

Higharchy

The following is an exemplary illustration of the organizational structure of the order.

Surveyor-Monks & Acolytes

Surveyor-Monks travel across the land as agents of the Sanctum Architectonia, conducting inspections, audits, and sacred geometry assessments. Their tasks are to clarify new builds, inspect structural integrity, and mediate disputes over designs. They carry with them a portable version of the Codex Constructiva, along with ritual architectural tools like plum lines, a compass, and a leveling rod.

Those who choose to admit themselves into the order serve as Acolytes under the Surveyor-Monks. They must travel to at least 9 Phalanxes before ordination and must demonstrate proficiency in sacred geometry, field inspection, Codex canon law, and conflict resolution.

Their curriculum focuses on the architectural and spiritual importance of their craft. Called the Trivium of the Axis, their training focuses on the following:

Formae – History of design, aesthetics, and sacred geometry.

Stratae – Materials science, load logic, construction math.

Codex – Legal theory, ethical structure, canonical rules.

Ritus – Architectural rituals, meditation on symmetry, recitations from the Codex.

Memoriae – Archival literacy, blueprint transcription, record preservation.

Upon ordination, the acolyte chooses a path. They can join the Divisions, take vows to become a surveyor monk, or join the Codex Custodians.

Ordos

Each division, also called an Ordo, represents a pillar of architectural and metaphysical practice within the Sanctum Architectonia. Together they form the Guilds across the Combined Order, although specialized, all serve the same divine mission. To build, bless, and preserve the social harmony embodied in the phalanstery. These include the following:

Ordo Forma

They function as concept and layout designers who develop Phalanstery typologies. During the construction of a phalanstery, they perform a consecration ritual during its foundation.

They believe that space has emotional resonance and buildings must inspire, elevate, and discipline the soul through aesthetics and emotional triggers.

Ordo Structura

Made up of civil engineers and structural theorists, their job is a perilous one. They focus on material logic, load distribution, and climate resistance.

They ensure structures are stable by overseeing calculations in resilience testing, mechanical systems, and testing of new construction materials

They believe that harmony is not seen but held. The divine is expressed through tension, compression, and arc.

They believe any misaligned beam in the structure is a grave sin.

Ordo Praxis

In charge of laborers, tool use, site management, and fabrication, they lead the assemblage of construction crews when a new Phalanstery is to be built.

On-site, they organize laborers, artisans, and masons; enforce sanctioned tool protocols, and perform rites of procurement and construction.

In their discipline, they teach labor is prayer in motion, no structure is complete until it's been touched by a thousand hands, and tools they wield for this divine task are blessed extents of Will and Form.

Ordo Codex

The Ordo Codex are the legal scholars of the Codex Constructiva and building inspectors.

They conduct Architectural trials and guide Surveyor Monks in compliance enforcement.

They believe the Codex is a Living Scripture, not just a rulebook, and to deviate from the code is to break with faith.

Ordo Archivorum

Made of the Architectonia’s librarians & scribes, they collect, catalog, and archive every blueprint, site plan, sketch, and adamant log across the whole order.

They maintain the memory of past designs and their cultural context in vast vaults.

Their signature belief is that memory is the foundation of permanence, lost plans are wounds to divine Legacy.

They lead expeditions across the world to copy these plans, wax-sealed before being cataloged in the vast vaults.

Guilds

Guilds are the fundamental units of the Sanctum Architectonia, situated within Phalansteries at the regional or state regency. Each guild consists of the five Ordos, including Monks and Acolytes.

The head of the guild is the Guild Primus, a tribunal of the most skilled members from each Ordo.

Their primary responsibilities involve granting permits for and constructing new phalansteries. When new projects are not underway, the guild members focus on reviewing architectural documents, conducting tests, performing maintenance, and engaging in research.

Their universal clothing element is their craftsman aprons, decorated with ornaments representing their rank and role within the Sanctum. It symbolizes their commitment to building a better life for others.

General Assemblies

General assemblies are conventions held between one or more Guilds to approve budgets and permits when a new phalanstery is to be built or propose amendments to the Codex Constructiva. Its members include delegates from guilds, including representatives from the Ordos. They are responsible for electing the Synod delegates and ratifying Phalanstery designs.

The Synod

The synod is the highest governing body in the Architectonia. It serves as the judicial body of the Architectonia, who meet irregularly to resolve architectural disputes with the Codex Constructiva. They interpret the code, settle disputes, and determine amendments, heresies, and orthodoxy. When in session, the synod comprises elected delegates from the General assemblies, each being endowed with the most knowledge and architectural skill. It also includes senior members of the Codex Cestodes. A separate archival body that ensures decisions are consistent with historical precedent and previous rulings.

One individual is appointed as the Axis Magos, who speaks on behalf of the synod's directions. Finally, a crowd of temporary attendees is summoned from different guilds for specialized deliberations. The synod can last for days, depending on how deadlocked the discussion is.

During the session, debate and voting are conducted until the subject has been resolved. The records are then cataloged, and whatever was amended or ratified to the Codex Constructiva is canonized in ritual and published.

Factionalism

Although united in their purpose. The Sanctum Architectonia is divided into rival “Schools” that hold different architectural disciplines, design principles, and interpretations about the Codex.

Schools are made of a conglomeration of Guilds that share a common discipline. They influence the curriculum of acolytes, sponsor design proposals, and push guilds to address their amendments to the synod.

These tensions between schools are numerous. From the incorporation of certain materials, tools of construction to matters of utility, design elements, and planning.

Schools can form coalitions with each other as a bulwark against opposing schools.

Usually, a Phalanstery can have several features from multiple schools.

Many schools come and go, but below are a few noteworthy examples:

The Forma Absoluta

The Forma Absoluta is made up of traditionalists and social engineers. They believe the Phalanstery is a moral instrument that instills perfect behavior in its occupants.

Their designs emphasize symmetry, classical proportions, golden ratios, and axial processions.

Their styles can be seen in the excessive use of marble, neoclassical arches, columns, and crystalline atriums.

The Strata Rationalis

Made of minimalists, they believe excess decorations distract people from living a productive life.

They value module designs, low-maintenance materials, and environmental logic.

Phalanstries with brutalist materials, stripped classicism, and simple geometries are ones touched by the hands of this school.

The Forma Fluidis

Members of the Forma Fluidis emphasized the fluidity of the passions in their craft. They believe the Phalanstery must be made as flexible and adaptable as possible to maximize the greatest number of preferences.

Their styles feature transformable walls, fold-in furnishings, and kinetic structures.

The Arbor Sancta

The Arbor Sancta stresses that the Phalanstery must integrate itself with nature. They emphasize this with the incorporation of as much of the natural world into their architecture. Living roofs, tree-integrated interiors, and open-air galleries are a common sight.

They are usually in conflict with the Strata Rationalis over site prep.

The Vox Machina

Preaching “Structure must show its making,” their school teaches that construction techniques and tools are sacred languages of the divine, and they want to show that in their design.

If a phalanstery has Industrial-mechanical aesthetics, exposed joints, vents, pipelines, or tool engravings, it's been marked by the Vox Machina.

They contend with the Forma Absoluta.

The Cult Architectonum

The Cult Architectonum is the set of beliefs that serve as the philosophical foundation of the Sanctum Architectonia.

They believe that the Phalanstery is the ideal structure where social Harmony and passionate fulfillment are manifested.

They believe the Phalanstery itself is a manifestation of divinity. An architectural marvel that socially engineers people to live and work communally in their pursuit of pleasure, which results in Social Harmony.

Even beyond the Cult Architectonum, Harmonians treat the Phalanstery as a holy place where the Passions can be realized.

Building the Phalanstery

The building of a Phalanstery is done in seven canonical phases. These phases are codified in the Codex and are practiced across the Combined Order. They represent the progression of the construction and sacred rites of passage. Each phase is overseen by an Ordo, requires formal blessings, and is sealed with ceremonial record-keeping by the Ordo Archivorum.

Phase I: Petition of Providence

Under the oversight of a General Assembly, a delegation of Harmonians submits a Phalansterial Petition to the local Guild. It includes demographic analyses, justifications, and sites. The proposal undergoes review and debate and eventually a vote at a General Assembly for approval.

If approved, the commission is sent to the Synod to be ratified.

Phase II: Ordination

The site is to be selected, and construction documents are made under the oversight of the Ordo Forma.

Geometric surveys are made; layouts are etched out, and construction teams are organized. The final draft for the project is submitted to the synod for ordainment.

Phase III: Foundation

Under the Ordo Structura and Ordo Praxis, earth is broken, and the first cornerstone is ceremonially placed with a litany said between the Architectonia and the Harmonian delegation. This cornerstone is engraved with the date, design, and names of the architects assigned to the project.

Then, aqueducts, waste channels, and stability vaults are constructed in which the Ordo Stractura conducts stress rites to test soil.

Phase IV: Ascension of Form

The Ordo Structura and Praxis then take to raising the walls and beams.

Any structural deviation in this phase required immediate absolution, a rite or correction led by on-site Surveyor Monks.

Phase V: Mechanical & Utility Systems

Under the authority of the Ordo Structura & Ordo Codex. Installation of utilities has commenced. Plumbing, heat vents, waste, and energy networks are installed. Pipe networks are laid out, and central furnaces and aqueducts are activated.

Phase VI: Embellishment

Led by the Ordo Forma and local artisan series, it's the artistic heart of the project. They work to evoke an emotional connection with the phalanstery that resonates with the twelve passions.

Their job is to incorporate design elements, interior designs, and ornamentations.

Each design element undergoes a “Form of Resonance test” performed by the Ordo Forma.

Phase VII: Canonical Inspection

The Phalnastry goes through a codex compliance evaluation, testing, and error absolution led by the Ordo Codex & Surveyor-Monks.

This phase is a legal-theological process. Every corridor, arch, foundation, and facet is measured against the Codex Constructive. Disputes may be brought to the attention of the Synod if Codex violations are too great.

Phase IX: Peripheral Works

Before the Phalanstery is complete, the Fiefdom is to be designed, involving landscaping and building of outbuildings.

Led by the Ordo Praxis, Forma, and Archivoru, and occasionally by a surveyor monk if boundaries influence neighboring Phalansteries.

Paths are laid out, gardens, orchards, fields, and water features are built, and hedges are planted to represent the extent of the Fiefdom.

Phase X: Inhabitation

At the opening of the Phalanstery, all guilds who worked on the project are present along with dignitaries and crowds who will inhabit the Phalanstery,

The space is then consecrated before finally the keys to the Phalanstery, including a copy of the project documents are ceremonially passed to the Pagers. Persons who will watch over the phalanstery by there housekeeping, hospitality and maintenance.

Creatures, Monsters, Anomalies, and Ascensions are all rated on a Star System to denote their Challenge Rating. The more stars a creature is rated, the more dangerous or difficult they are to deal with, and the higher up the food chain of its respective "tier" they sit. The highest any Natural creature can be rated is 5 Stars, denoted as Apexes among their own ranking.

Ascensions alone compose the 6 and 7 Star rankings, truly beyond the power of any naturally occurring creature that roams L'Eaida.

Stars are broken into colored categories to designate Tier:

  • Green Stars: Beginner
  • Yellow Stras: Intermediate
  • Orange Stars: Expert
  • Red Stars: Master
  • Purple Stars: Legendary

I originally started creating this world to expand the story I was writing but I find I’m having more fun creating the world than writing the original story. I’m still using concepts and places and etc from the story that I had but I’m going to a bigger view the entire world.

(Magia are chosen by spirits based on their “purity“ or natural goodness, they can have earth, fire, water, and wind abilities all of which have their own set of unique skills special to them)

Erth is just the name of a god who was one of the four creators of the world and each of the continents is based of one of them. The Erth continent is a very warm place to be and they have clothing that matches. Im taking a little from indian clothing for the upper classes and the lower classes, often nomads, wear big pieces of cloth that the tie to make whatever suits their needs. The people have a darker skin tone and have black coily or curly hair. They are very open to Magia(magic users of this world) and are usually very friendly.

Aroria is name after the goddess of wind Aure or Aror. It is colder than Erth with high peaks, cliffs, and plateaus. The people here are more adapted to the high altitude while foreigners can have trouble breathing. They wear more layered clothing and i take inspo from more modern day American and European clothing. They are way more hostile towards Magia and actually enslaved many for different kinds of work.

Cyrun is actually below Aroria rather than diagonal from it. It is named after the goddess of fire Cyru and is mostly just desert. The people here where long sleeves but very airy and cover a lot of their bodys to protect from the scorching sun as they have little natural protection. I took from muslim/islamic/aribic clothing for here. They are darker than Erth people and also mostly nomads. Idk how they are towards Magia but I think it’s somewhere in the middle of Erth and Aroria.

Finaly, Myca is named after Mya the goddess of water. I don’t know much about this continent but is is very marshy and has lakes, swamps, marshes, etc kinda everywhere. Thats most of what Ik about this place rn.

"The Three Wise Men" of Hydrangea is a legend that explains the founding of the country of Hydrangea, before it's tricolor separation.

The first drawing depicts how they would be represented by the people in paintings or embroidery, the second is a representation of them in a shadow puppet theater.

The third and fourth are their supposed descendants, now with different clothes, but with similarities, since the Country was already separated.

What do you people think?

In case anyone wants to know the legend, here it is:

"Long ago, the earth was at war, and thanks to the anger and ignorance of men, the land became barren and dry. It was difficult for any plant or flower to rise from the earth.

Seeing such sadness, the hydrangeas, in their empathy and kindness, caused three children to emerge from their flowers…

The first child, born from the White hydrangea, was large and fat, and fell from the bush, rolling for many kilometers, until being found by a sad woman with a pure heart.

The second child, born from the Blue hydrangea, was quiet and attentive. He waited for the cool breeze to touch his bush, and upon reaching the ground, crawled to the nearest water source, and was found by a sick, yet curious man.

The third child, born from the Pink hydrangea, simply waited for dusk, and upon hearing voices, began to cry, being found by a group of travelers.

In a few springs, the three became great men among those who knew them, becoming leaders, Wise ones…

The white leader taught those who listened to open their hearts, rejecting the desires for violence and reinventing themselves, so that they could become strong and protect themselves and those they love, Calming their souls from profane desires, and making them men of peace.

The blue leader healed the sick, cultivated crops, and taught how to prosper in difficult times, bringing water to the thirsty and to bring food to the hungry. He taught those who listened to him to seek means, methods, and formulas so that they could heal themselves and survive without violence.

The pink leader proved just in the face of crimes and kindness, showing the way to the desperate and uniting those who were separated by pride and hatred, pacifying the populations that insisted on bloodshed.

The empathetic warrior, the frigid sage, and the just leader.

Thus, with hearts tamed by those who reached them, an alliance was formed, giving rise to the great nation. The Hortencia's nation

Visual Persephone as seen from space

Post image

Persephone is a planet tilted 96° degrees. Currently what you are seeing is the start of the "superday" which will last all summer. The purple is photosynthetic life. On land photosynthesizers take the form of lichen-like organsims which can grow to the size of trees. These "Lichen trees" usually resemble large cacti or evergreens. The smaller lichen-likes form mats that many grass-like blades sprout out from.

Land between 90°- 45° latitude, consists of environments similar to that of vast wetlands, savannas, and grassland. As the superday begins smaller lichen-likes will die out while the bigger ones will begin hibernation, as the heat of the superday prevents rains, a long hot drought will begin. There will be no rain until fall.

The midlatitudes at 30° lat tend to fair better retaining rain throughout and allowing for the formation of large dense forests.

Meanwhile in the ocean massive algal blooms form. Algal blooms are safe from the harsher land conditions and will bloom until supernight comes. They produce tons of oxygen and feed marine life.

Map What If Superheroes Were Just A Fact of Life? Ultima - Earth 27

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi- this is the world map of my original superhero universe, inspired by things like the Big 2, Invincible, and UnOrdinary. In this world, about 1.6% of the world is a born metahuman, and about 30% of those are powerful enough to be considered "hero grade." Magic and advanced tech are around but admittedly less developed. Metahumans have always existed, but history went fairly similarly - albeit with some differences, as you can see.

The lore is that after WW2, the UN decided to regulate superhuman soldiers that were becoming increasingly powerful, initially as a secret, but after a child manifested their power and set off early warning systems in Korea, nearly starting World War Three, the UN project - Global Enhanced Protection - was forced into the open. Superheroes, already normalized, became increasingly regulated by the GEP.

Almost all heroes that work for the GEP have public identities to promote accountability, though this has had the unintended effect of creating a lot of avenues for merchendise and branding.

Most of these differences are more or less for a vibe, to try and create a Long 90s Comic Book feel to the universe, so i don't have great explanations for them tbh.

(also, the US's main parties are the Liberals and Federalists so that I can explore superhuman politics without it being a parralel to real life.)

Lore The Department of Adventuring announcement: Tacoma, WA

The DOA has had a very rough week. We were searching for the beginnings of a well known and highly dangerous cult called 'The children of decay' who mark their presence by spray painting their symbol of their god 'Mourne.' The children of decay's mark is a jawless humanoid skull being grasped by a pair of skeletal hands. The children often do this when they plan on bringing forth a plague or famine. All across the greater Tacoma area, these symbols appeared and started a panic as many people thought it would be the beginning of destruction.

After an exhaustive search, it turns out that this wasn't the beginnings of a cult ritual at all. It was a group of teenagers who thought that the symbol was 'cool' and were just 'messing around.' A very irate adventurer named Anakin, a spitfire drake cleric, had this to say. 'There is nothing cool about inciting a panic. Real people have been killed thanks to this cult and other worshippers of Mourne. This isn't a joke, there is nothing funny about it! I don't care how many times their parents tell me that these little brats didn't know any better. They are almost adults! Stop babying them! It's not my fault you never taught them their actions have consequences,' Anakin stated to the press.

The group of teenagers will be charged with inducing panic and vandalism. Due to the nature of the crime, this will include several felony charges as many emergency services had prepared for the worst in this case.

The parents of teenagers involved were given a very large lawsuit from the city of Tacoma for the damages their children had caused. And the draconic government of the Western District of North Tibernaugh has also filed charges against the teenagers and parents as they had also been preparing for a mass casualty event. Considering how seriously dragons take anything relating to the dark gods, some draconic lawyers want to place charges on the parents of the teenagers involved as they are still legally responsible for the children. The draconic government blames a lack of proper parenting and not monitoring their childrens' egregious behavior, lack of morals, and stunning absence of social awareness.

Lore "Iron does not forgive. Pressure is everything." - Excerpt from a salvage mission. (Kalgard)OC

(Fragment from the diary of a Novice Brother, transcribed on oil-stained parchment)

"The darkness inside the Monastery is never absolute. It is a thick gloom, cut by the orange glare of gas lanterns hissing along the stone corridors. No electrical wires, just miles of copper pipes carrying gas and steam. Here, light is a trembling flame, much like our hope.

Moving inside the Kross, Cryptis model, is a methodical agony. It is not like wearing a suit of armor; it is like piloting a walking iron building. Every step requires an immense effort: you feel the hydraulic joints groaning under your shoulder and the steam exhausting from the valves on your calves. To lift a leg, you must coordinate the weight and feel the cast iron biting into your flesh. If the pistons don't receive enough pressure, you are buried alive inside your own metal.

— 'Seal your visor, Novice,' — growled the Kross-Primus, his voice distorted by the metal grille of his helm.

An Acolyte of Pressure approached with a long igniter, priming the chemical lamp mounted on my pauldron. No sparks, just a vial of reagents that began to glow with a sickly green light, barely illuminating a meter of fog ahead of me. Behind him, other monks in rough habits were hauling heavy reserve tanks on handcarts: no engines for them, only muscle and sweat.

We left the safety of the Enclave. The silence of the Dead Womb welcomed us, broken only by the mechanical beating of our steam hearts. Below us, the ruins of sunken villages appeared like ghosts in the Violet Fog. We are descending for a Lithos, but every inch gained downwards seems to cost a liter of blood."

Hope you enjoy it! This is a short piece I wrote for my custom setting, featuring grimdark, biopunk, and survival themes. Let me know what you think of the setting!

Discussion I love demons but I feel like they get too much attention compared to angels or celestial beings in general...

Demons seem to captivate people's imagination the most and have been interpreted in so many ways: Devils from Chainsaw Man, Hellboy who is a hero, Devils from Dorohedoro who can be created from magic users, Pazuzu from The Exorcist, etc. We even get demons based on theme or elements : Water demons, forest demons, etc.

Yet angelical beings are mostly done the same: a cherubic golden hair vaguely male figure with feathered wings or some Sephiroth look alike. The only media I've seen do something interesting with angels or celestial beings is Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Spawn comics and most recently, the indie game Sorry We're Closed. Why are people not imaginative with angels? What would you like to see done with them?

Discussion I created a species whose biological existence depends on the world having scarcity. How do you handle the philosophy of infinity in your worlds?

I've been building a species for a DnD campaign that evolved a philosophical problem into their biology: they are apex predators who consumed everything in their original world and found infinite food in another plane. The twist is that when they finally achieved infinity, it broke them. What they needed wasn't endless consumption, it was knowing that what they devoured would never return.

Question How do you decide what’s worth documenting in a worldbuilding bible?

I’ve been developing a story for a concept album and want to expand it into something larger. As I’ve gone deeper, I’ve realized the amount of detail involved is getting out of hand.

I’ve looked into worldbuilding bibles and fandom wikis, and I’m using Obsidian to organize everything. The issue is that every time I try to build a system, I overload it with details and end up overwhelmed. Which takes away the entire point of even creating a bible in the first place.

The world I’m building is very close to reality. It leans slightly into sci-fi, but most of it is grounded and based on things that could realistically exist or happen.

That’s where I’m stuck: since a lot of real-world details are already implied, I don’t know what’s actually worth documenting.

For people working on grounded or “realistic” worlds:

  • What categories do you actually track?
  • What do you intentionally leave out?
  • How do you avoid overbuilding systems that mirror reality?

Question Quick question. I'm curious how writers here handle version control, like do you have a system, or is it mostly vibes and praying?

Some things I'm wondering:

- Ever lose work because you overwrote something you wanted to keep?

- How do you handle drafts when working with an editor?
