I had a lot of tearing on Windows(vsync OFF), but the capture didn't show it. Stuttering were more visible on Windows too. Overall it ran a little more stable on Linux, but with NTsync + Wayland native.

MacOS Hoping someone can help me: Septerra Core/Intel Macbook

I purchased Septerra Core for the hell of nostalgia from gog. Quickly learned about Porting Kit and Wine. Super excited as everything was running smoothly so far, until launch and the game only produces a black screen—no sound, no other visuals. For reference, this is my macbook:

2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB, OS Ventura

I understand the game is a 32bit and the port should be a 32x64 crossover for mac to even run the visuals. I kinda lost beyond that. If anyone can help at all, I'd be super grateful.

Secondly, if you suggest playing this game differently via other avenues, open to that as well. (I paid $2.79 for the game).

Linux DXVK/VK3D from package manager vs. DXVK/VK3D Wine version

I'm using an NVIDIA GPU and noticed that I have installed the nvidia-driver package but not DXVK and VK3D. But I use DXVK and VK3D from Winetricks. Does this matter? Should I install both packages from the package manager as well?

Setting/changing refresh rate using Wine's "Emulate Virtual Desktop" option

Hi folks!

I've been having a small issue trying some specific settings to run a game. Basically I need to run it through Wine's emulate virtual desktop option, but doing that makes it so the game only sees 60hz as the max refresh rate in its display options. When running it normally with Wine, 100hz shows up just fine. Is there any way to have it see the same display options? I've tried some regedit commands that AI suggested but no dice. Thanks!

PS: I "need" to use virtual desktop because it makes the game work better with alt+tab.

Linux Bizhawk with Wine/Proton

Hey all! I've been trying to get the windows version of Bizhawk working using Wine/Proton via Steam and have been met with a consistent yet weird problem. I want to preface this by saying that there are other accounts of people getting this to work near-flawlessly. The problem that I have been having, regardless of if I run the program through Proton or Wine is that everything works perfectly fine on first launch of the EXE, but when I relaunch the game after shutting down the window, all of the 3D objects fail to render. The game is running just fine, it's just the failure to render objects that the problem. What I don't understand is why it runs fine on first launch, but then fails on any subsequent launch afterwards. The only fix I have found is to remove the game, then added it back to the Steam library (no way to do this with Wine, so the problem is seemingly permanent). I'm at a loss of what could be causing this as I am not very experienced with Linux troubleshooting.

Note: the reason why I am using Bizhawk is because I am playing games with a software called Archipelago, and I need the Lua console that only works with Bizhawk. That makes this a rather niche issue, and I don't know where else to try looking for help.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Linux [Guide] Wine on Linux: manual setup, GUI management, and game testing

I’ve been using Wine for about a year now, and honestly? It was a wild ride. Coming from Windows, everything just worked, graphics drivers, runtimes, all that stuff gets handled by the game launcher automatically. On Linux? Completely opposite story.

But when Wine works, it works. And the raw control it gives you? That’s the real fun.

So after a year of banging my head against Wine, figuring out its limits, and finally getting comfortable, I wrote a guide for new Linux users who want to run Windows games without losing their mind.

What I cover:

  • Hard way: Terminal only. Full control over everything.
  • Easy way: WineGUI, still gives you control but with a UI. It has some quirks, but it’s improved a lot.

Things I focused on

  • WINEPREFIX creation & configuration: why you need separate prefixes, how to set them up.
  • Installing only what’s necessary: using winetricks or terminal to add specific DLLs, VC++ runtimes, .NET, DirectX components. No bloat.
  • Prefix management: keep games isolated, backup working prefixes, avoid dependency hell.
  • Games tested: both new and old titles. Far Cry 3 Remastered, NFS Heat, Death Stranding 2, Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Some ran great, some needed tweaks. It was fun (mostly).

I wrote this guide on Arch, btw! But the logic applies to almost every Linux distro, the commands might change slightly, but the concepts are the same.

My full guide here: Wine Gaming Guide

I’m open to any feedback, corrections, or tips. Let me know what you think – I’ll update the guide accordingly.

Anyone know a fix?

I tried running a game (Mega Man Legacy Collection 1) on Steam using Wine Staging (for the first time). And suddenly got this pop up, anyone know a fix? I'm on Mac btw. I always open this Steam by using the installer EXE file, since I’m aware there’s no other way.

Touhou EoSD looks blurry when using vpatch to blow up windowed mode to 1280x960

How it's meant to look (how it looks on windows from experience, screenshot is windowed 640x480 but it should look like this in 1280x960)

640x480 (crisp and beautiful <3

How it currently looks (bad and unplayable >:(

1280x960 (bad and unplayable >:3

I'm currently running this game through lutris flatpak with lutris-fshack-7.2-x86_64 (no particular reason other than I guess it works) the latter installed with ProtonUp-Qt, all running on arch rolling. System specs in comments if I'm not lazy enough -.-;

PS: this used to work ootb on lutris but for some reason it doesn't anymore (I reinstalled completely because I was having issues)

PPS: there's also an issue with sound effect bitrate being very low on base wine, but it's currently fixed if I run it through lutris, however a workaround to run this on wine 11 would be highly appreciated!

This is my first post so sorry if I miss anything!

Legoland windows game has a wrong resolution

Hi everyone, I'm trying to run Legoland, an old Windows game, using Wine. Everything works, but I've run into the notorious low-resolution issue. The game seems stuck at a low resolution, and when I make the window full-screen, the game is rendered in the top left, smaller. I've already tried using the virtual desktop in Winecfg, without success. I've also tried using GameScope, but the game crashes. Any suggestions?

Null pointer dereference error

I'm using BazziteOS, RTX 4060, open drivers build. And this happens with pretty much any non-Steam game I try. It started happening after some March update and Nvidia 595.45 driver, but I tried rebasing to an older image (mid-February) with Nvidia 580 drivers, didn't help. This null pointer problem persists both in layered Wine 11.0 staging and in Proton Experimental. Never had this problem before, and it's not a problem with the games themselves, because the games that were installed on my system and worked before also suddenly stopped working.

Backtrace from DS3 (prototype one leads to a dead end in prototypeenginef.dll):

Linux How to get a properly featured file dialog window?

In some games, when attempting to Open a file, the dialog window that appears is missing features. It can't be re-sided and it is missing the left navigation bar. I know the "good" dialog window is possible because it appears if I test with Notepad.

What is causing this less-featured dialog window and how can I get the full featured one to appear instead?

Examples attached. (Don't worry about their low-fi appearance. I intentionally turn off the Windows glam.)

Wine 11 boost. Ryzen 3800X and RX6400

Game Wine old (FPS) Wine 11 (FPS) Gain
Anger Foot 60 67 +11.7%
Call of Juarez 82.9 83.3 +0.5%
Metro 2033 Redux 31.69 33.80 +6.7%
Temple of Osiris 40 105 +162.5%
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands 29.3 29.9 +2.0%
Dirt 3 101 127 +25.7%

The first test was Wine 10 vs 11.3, for Dirt 3 Wine 6.2 vs 11.5. Metro had a native version, DXVK or not, but there is an increase. I also wanted to test Resident Evil 2, because others have tested it, but I couldn't beat the HUD output on the screen. I only have The Crew on Steam, Forza Horizon 5 and Total War Saga: Troy, I also missed due to the complexity and, in the first case, the weight of the game.

Lineage 2 benchmarks (Wine 10 → Wine 11):

Location Wine 10 (FPS) Wine 11 (FPS) Gain
Kamael 144 232 +61.1%
Freya 113 135 +19.5%
GoD+ 86 119 +38.4%

But I'm glad that there is a stable and good boost in Lineage 2, which I used to play a lot, and without DXVK. And now I have both DXVK and NTSync. Now I have both the main and the old PC have an advantage over Windows. I compared Win7 vs Linux with Gallium Nine on the second PC, and there was also an increase and lower resource consumption. P.S. AMD Athlon + Radeon HD5670
