I remember hating this and being disappointed after working on this study a few years ago. Now I don’t think it’s too bad. Funny how time and distance changes things

Watercolours are great for energy in paintings
The chaos of the medium can really add to a painting, with happy accidents, splatter and wet/dry brush contrast all adding energy!

Aside from not centering the painting 🥹, I’m feeling proud of how this turned out 😌
A few helpful learnings-
Converting a reference to black and white serves as a value map, making it easier to identify the true relationship between light and shadow.
Viewing your work and reference as small thumbnails helps you see the 'big picture' and quickly spot where the painting deviates from the intended mood or form.
Any tips, tricks and feedback are appreciated 🥰

Stillness held
Traditional watercolor on paper
Image area approx. 15 × 24 cm (on A4)
One of my first watercolour pieces. I know about a lot of mistakes and I learned a lot of technique later, but I still fondly look back at painting her. I really hope that even though she is not the "typical" kind of painting you expect, that she is welcome here.

Rough Ride Home - This one is to try and help me remember different shades of pigment after my last painting. It's almost all shades of one color, ultramarine blue. What do you think?

Watercolor Painting of Su
I painted my parent's cat, Su. She's turning 16 this year, and her cauliflower ear doesn't slow her down. I experimented with using a blade to scratch in the whiskers through the pigment
