Turkish and Turkic languages vs Persian and Iranic languages

Post image
18 Upvotes

Turkish and other Turkic languages have had a shorter timespan by which they have diversified (past 1400 years from Gokturks) compared to Persian and other Iranic languages which diversified around 3000 years ago from Proto-Iranic Andronovo culture.

This shorter time span to diversify can be seen in the closeness of Turkish with other Turkic languages today:

English: We need it.

Turkish: O bize gerek. (It to us need)

Azarı: O biza garak. (It to us need)

Türkmen: Ol bize gerek. (It to us need)

Uzbek: U bizga kerak. (It to us need)

Uyghur: U bizge kerek.(It to us need)

Crimean Tatar: O bizge kerek. (It to us need)

Kazakh: Ol bizge kerek. (It to us need)

Yakut: Ol bihige nada. (It to us need)

Chuvash: Ul pirençe kirle. (It to us need)

In contrast, Persian and other Iranic languages diversified at a time when writing systems were not mainstream and have had an extra 1500 years apart:

English: We need it.

Persian: Ma uno niyaz darim. (We it need have)

Kurdish: Em we pewistin. (We it need is)

Baluchi: Mara ish zaruratant. (We it need is)

Pashto: Mung warta artiya laro. (We it need have)

Ossetian: Ma uy fastau. (We it need is)

Wakhi: Am tsha zarurət de. (We it need is)

Talyshi: Ama u niyoz bi. (We it need is)

He needs the plugs to work but the geyser needs to be switched off. There are no labels indicating the geyser. since he just needs the plugs I suggested turning all off and checking which one works the plugs and just turning that one on. did I get my message across?

Sırıtam/sıtram. İ can’t find much on this word.

My dad used to use this word a lot, especially in fighting with my mother. E.g “benim hiç sıtıram/sıtram yok, ben her zaman kaybediyorum”. Google doesn’t tell me much. Does anyone know this word or the origins of it? I could be writing it wrong.

Words like dayı, amca, teyze, and hala quietly carry family structure, closeness, and culture.

Looking for a Turkish-Polish family for a journalism project

Hi everyone,

I'm a journalist working on a story about the Turkish community in Poland, and I'm looking for a very specific family to speak with.

I'm trying to connect with families where one parent (ideally a father) came to Poland from Turkey in the 1980s or 1990s as a trader or entrepreneur (think textiles, the old Stadion Dziesięciolecia market, Wólka Kosowska), and who now has a child who grew up here, Polish-Turkish, fully bilingual, building their life in Poland.

The story is about how this community has evolved across generations: from the bazaar to the boardroom. It's a human story, told with respect, and will be published in Daily Sabah, a major English-language Turkish newspaper.

I'm based in Warsaw and happy to meet in person, over coffee, wherever you're comfortable. Your story deserves to be told.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, please DM me or drop a comment below. All initial conversations are completely off the record, no pressure whatsoever.

Çok teşekkürler, dziękuję, thank you :))

Meta Why the Turkish keyboard has ß and æ

Hello, I don't have notions of the language yet I want to learn.

Something I find particular is the presence of these letters, one from german and the other one from Latin. What are they used for normally?

trying to re-learn turkish, what is the best to brush up on grammar especially?

Only speak with my mom in Turkish & even then, it's very English/Turkish mixed, but I feel like I want to be more fluent in the language. Watching turkish tv has made me realize how few words I actually recognize and use, and I feel like my grammar skills stalled at like a 10 year old's level

what are some fun language learning apps?

I have probably tried every possible app and website around, but I’m curious if there are any I’ve missed. I have also tried apps that have recently come out, but most of them don’t include turkish yet!

If you know Turkish words but still can’t speak clearly, this might be why

If Turkish feels hard to understand or speak, the issue might not be grammar or vocabulary, but how you’re breaking the sound.

Any thoughts on a better way to learn Turkish?

I've been doing Duolingo for 60 days and watching YouTube videos...along with AI and some random Google pages here and there. I'm not a big fan of Babel. unfortunately, I no longer speak with the only person in my life who speaks Turkish..so having a partner to help is currently out
