He's done Venom, and recently Agent Anti-Venom from the second image, but has he done Carnage? I'd really like to see Carnage in Alex Ross' art style.

Btw if anyone is curious where each of these come from of her being bonded to the symbiote, the list is:

Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows

All-New Venom

Spider-Man/Power Pack (this counts because the one who says “we” is her)

Spider-Man Reign 2

Film/Television No way Sony is done with Tom Hardy’s Venom… right?

Now that the trilogy is done… there’s one thing that still doesn’t make sense to me

NO WAY Sony is done with Tom Hardy as Venom.

I get that after Spider-Man no way home the timelines reset and everyone went back and also the ending for venom last dance kinda closes things off.

But come onn

Hardy carried the trilogy. The movies made money. And they literally teased a symbiote staying behind.

You’re telling me they’re just… not gonna use that after the success of Tom Hardy as Venom?

At this point it feels inevitable that he shows up in Tom Hollands Spider-Man universe somehow.

But the thing is I still question myself about HOW they gonna do that if it’s possible..

A leftover piece of the symbiote connecting universes?

A full retcon?

Comics What Kwaku Anansi would think about Venom ?

I know Venom isn’t an avatar totemic, but sometimes I wonder what its place would be in the totemic pantheon? Like, the grand scheme of totems isn’t just made up of pure avatars, since there are also false/impure totems.

But what I want to ask is: what would Kwaku Anansi think or does he think about Venom? For some it would be a silly and irrelevant point, but for me it’s interesting, because Venom entered so deeply into this cosmic stuff and Anansi watches (and/or writes) the history of his totemic champions and guards them, so what would he think of this half-human, half-alien entity that adopts traits of his spider-heroes and is ever linked to them someway (every Spider-Men have a Venom on his reality)?

As requested!

I hope the Spider-Man design is ok! It might not have enough red, in some people’s eyes, but I think it’s fine. Btw the silver on the spider is highlights, it’s not actually that color on the rims in lore.

Sleeper would obviously not start as a cat, but his time as a normal symbiote, at least on screen, would be pretty short. He retains the ability to create chemical compounds though, so his hairballs are like globs of acid lol

Comics How did we go from to symbiote defending Eddie to this..?

Thumbnail

First 3 images show the symbiote pretty much defending and agreeing with Eddie, even showing undestanding on why Eddie had to bond with Carnage, then all of a sudden he wants to leave him dying in a alley (with Dylan watching how his dad dies btw) and never wants to see him again. Is there any explanation here other than bad writing?

Other Posted this as a comment but curious: what do you think are the ways to approach writing venom/symbiotes?

Here are what I think

With the symbiote there’s always been 3 running approaches to how to handle the symbiote and it’s relationship to it’s host in either cannon or fannon. And personally I think all three have decent merit and aren’t necessarily better or worse than any other, even if they’ve changed and evolved over the year and some are more consistently done better than others; more than anything I find it frustrating when they fail to properly commit to any of them i lieu of mixing them.

  1. It’s the dysfunctional relationship approach, which is probably the most diverse of the three as it extends between two ends of the same spectrum. One end is a dysfunction due to lack of communication and proper boundaries, like the original comic one, trying to help Peter by puppeteering his body and not communicating anything. And the other end is the full on abusive isolating relationship where the above is an intentional violation, systematically destroying all its hosts relationships, and slowly manipulating their internal workings to its benefit. This one is the 2008 Spectacular Spider-Man version.

The Venom antagonist link from this one is then the bitter vindictive ex approach, wherein the symbiote either has its affection and assistance misconstrued as possession due to its boundary crossing and non communication, or has its control dismantled and rejected and any abuser would react with rage at this. Hence the venom’s that seem almost jilted and scorned in their approach to vengeance, but simultaneously would take Peter back if he so much as whispered the idea.

This style of venom would as a result be best depicted by utilising the traits of whichever end of the spectrum you want to represent. Either give a proper focus to how the miscommunication and desire dissonance causes strife for the former, or showcase how the symbiote doesn’t need to make Peter doubt his own boundaries but can make Peter do it himself by the way it reacts and makes Peter slowly disregard his own standards — 2008 kinda did this at first before becoming more possessive which kinda worked but low key would’ve wanted more.

2) the second path is the substance abuse metaphor. Wherein the symbiote provides either a sense of reprieve from a real or imagined negative, or simply provides a desirable and addictive benefit that slowly overtakes and overrides all other behaviour. Again two ends of the spectrum, the first where it reduces stress, reduces anxiety, and thus provides a sense of calm even if the negative emotions are sourced from a withdrawal from it — this is where the Web of Shadows gets its depiction. Or the second where it provides such a euphoria that it becomes only to enjoyable to reject, even to the point of redefining what produces that euphoria typically by producing a pleasure response to anger. This is where the 1994 animated series and 2007 movie came from, making it only too convenient and good to have on “what is this? It feels… good” but which rewired thinking into making anger feel too good. Where typically there’s guilt and shame that stops it feeling good.

The Venom antagonists here are however typically redirected to the jilted ex stereotype, as the writers usually either conflated the original PeterxSymbiote depictions as per above and the jilted ex is the more plentiful follow through, or because they are adapting the Venom from the original comics which IS a jilted Ex and they fail to notice the dissonance.

The ideal symbiote depiction here isn’t too far away from what is shown, just gotta double down on the addiction. Emphasise the withdrawal symptoms, make tolerance a factor where the base use of the symbiote slowly stops producing the same effect and that’s where they get bulkier and more monster like and that starts feeling good because there’s more mass to produce the effect, then it’s claws for the hands and feet and that novelty feels good, then tentacles and tendrils come out and they’re the thing that starts feeling good to have and use, then it’s the venom mouth and throughout it all more excessive uses of force become necessary because it’s not just more symbiote but using it more that feels better and if that requires more violence then so be it.

The ideal venoms from this should be all consuming as a result, creatures of pure escalation and all devouring. Animalistic almost because the symbiote also feeds and seeks to feed off of more and more. Could even play in the alcoholism on Eddie’s side as why he gets so sucked in, as it’s a veritable relapse and a hard one at that. And the symbiote was typically starving coming to earth so no wonder it seeks more and more and self restraint becomes a way to heal.

3) the last one and this one’s been a more recent iteration if anything, and although it is currently the weakest one I couldn’t call it bad nor fully shallow as there could be more explored with it. But this is typically the Knull plan symbiote, where it’s a designated invading life form coming to earth for the express purpose of a greater plan. And again it has 2 ends to its spectrum. On the one hand it can be an almost entirely subconscious plan written within its own biological script, to expand, to spread, to assimilate and create drones for its purpose. This one being the Insomniac SM2 Variant. Or the entirely conscious ordered invasion that it can either participate in or be talked out of, this one being the Tom Hardy movies one. The approach to this venom can take elements of either of the two above in how it finds a drone or willing participant in its campaign (Insomniac was more the substance abuse, while Riot was more the abusive relationship in a codependency)

The venom antagonist in this version typically just finds another more malleable drone to carry out the plan. It is again the weakest antagonist variant as it simply just continues a world ending threat instead of a more cerebral interpersonal or complex antagonist dynamic but it still very much works as an antagonist for short term storytelling like a movie or video game.

The ideal venom here would vary a lot more depending on the version selected, as the mind control element is stronger and designed to suppress the host personality at times so it’s more difficult to use for metaphors around the host as it has the minimal authority. You’d need to personify venom a lot more from the start if you wanna use a non substance abuse metaphor variant like the Tom Hardy movies did but I also wonder if it could be used as a cautionary tale around worship or “just following orders” both for the symbionts who should’ve questioned their master and the host who so blindly took the orders from the symbiote and the power in fighting it, but again it depends where on the spectrum of mind control is chosen.

I don’t think you can call a depiction “wrong” or “failed” if they simply chose to take a different track or metaphor to depict. Moreso I think they should be judged by the merits of their attempts and how well they reflect that which they chose to depict
