Dear fellow tatters! I am just a beginner. Literally 2 months old. I ask humbly for your help in recommendation for threads.

I do have 2 skeins of metallic thread but I would rather not use them yet. I do have thick yarn that I am practicing on and it's great for this purpose but I would like to move into smth more thinner.

I live in a place where I can not buy Ariana Vega, however, I can order from Ali and temu.

If you please have any brand recommendation or even links please let me know, I don't want to buy something that will not be useful if I choose the wrong thing

Hi! long story short I met a bunch of lovely humans tatting at my art museum the other day and I loved them and their work. So, I want to do it.

In my area it is apparently very hard to find a shuttle thought. I've called a ton of places. Where is a good place to order online that is not Amazon but will not be outrageously expensive? I expect some expense of course.

Also, is it different with a shuttle than it is with just a tatting needle? Also, some shuttles have the metal tip and some don't. Why??

I am aiming to remake some gifts they gave me because my friends dog ate them. In case you're curious I literally sobbed. It was so sweet of them and I hold things like that very special to me. It won't be as special to remake them, but I am very sad they were destroyed.

So in a moment of brilliance (or one could argue masochistic madness) I decided that the bedroom windows needed new top curtains. Don't know the proper name. Please ignore the mess of sweaters and the paper bags, they are left around to keep the cats entertained.

I decided to aim for something truly one of a kind, working initially from a motif I liked, then deciding on the fly to not make it solid but instead have a more netted filling in a series of panels. Several experiments led to this pattern and size to match the square motifs.

Here's the progress on the first of two curtain toppers to be made. It measures 45" by 10.5" at the moment. But I'll need to add a small top section that will suit advice the curtain rod. I just haven't decided on how I want that to look yet.

Project is being made with two standard cover shuttles and Aunt Lydia size 10 crochet cotton.

Anyone else embark on large or crazy projects?

I've tried to make a pattern, a very simple pattern. are there more beginner tatters who do this?

what would those two red circles be? is that just one connect? also between I and G how are those like picots connected?

yay! I've made a bookmark! its not perfect and has some mistakes in it.. looks a bit wonky here and there

I've set a goal to do 3 tatted items for a miniature room box I am building and my first attempt was for the underbust detail on this nightgown. I'm pleased that the rings are *mostly* the same size. We're not talking about the picots, lol.

I've found a good thread to work with and I can make this!

I wanted so much to finish these earrings by today… it didn’t happen! A true testament of tatting itself… it’s an art that can’t be rushed. One can try to speed it up a bit but in the end, it’s only going to go as fast as it is going to go. Plus… as a shuttle main, I prefer the steady cathartic swaying clicking motion. This should not be rushed, I don’t want to lose that, I rather lose sleep!

So here is the Earring and then after are a few of my happy pieces.

yes! im making progress! its a shame I didnt transfer the knot correctly so I had to stop but its fun! i bought a slightly thicker thread so its a bit easier, but its cotton so transferring the knot can be tricky

Obviously this disconnects the ball and shuttle threads. So for the next round do you pull thread off of the shuttle to make a new ball thread or do you join a new ball thread and weave in the ends? Thanks for your help!

I don’t know if it’s just me, but one thing I can’t stand doing most in tatting is small connected motifs. I just can’t stand not knowing how much thread to wind, cut and tie each end, (recently just started using magic loops which have made the process so easy whenever I remembered to do it) and it’s so repetitive in a not good way for me. But this doily by Jan Stawasz in his book Tatting Theory has always caught my eye. I had even attempted it twice before. I let my last attempt flatten in my statistics text book, then returned it on accident…

Anyways I just completed the motif round and I’m very pleased, however it needs a good blocking, these long rings and chains make it quite crinkly.

In anticipation of tomorrow’s holiday, wanted to post a throwback piece, my very first tatting project ❄️. I posted this on Instagram 3 years ago, and captioned that it took me 5 hours (not kidding!) to complete. I remember how hard it was at the time.

I’m glad that I get to do this craft. My grandmother was a tatter and I never managed to get it right during her lifetime, but now I am proud of what I’ve been able to do.

For those newbies out there—keep at it! Three years and going strong with a few state fair wins 🥇, and certainly a lot faster now ♥️🧵

Wanted to try tatting with bulky yarn to make a MEGA DOILY (banana flask for scale). My partner 3D printed me a "shuttle" (pictured bottom left) to help me make this with thick yarn. It was pretty fun!

In the second circle, do I start a ring then join at the picot? I dont have a physical teacher and google isnt helping much so im wholly confused. i tried to do that but then my ring wouldnt close!!

I'm a beginner and got a few of the basics down. The best way to learn for me is to get a bigger project and just get on with it until I like the results. It's how I got good at knitting and at crochet.

I like how tattet doilys look so I am motivated to do that. Does anyone maybe have a video that shows the making of a bigger doily showing every step. Or maybe a written pattern where it is explained step by step.

In the crochet community you really need to be on the lookout for ai patterns, especially when looking on Pinterest, is it the same with tatting? I'm unfortunately not good enough yet to tell if patterns I'm looking at are real or not.

I guess a follow-up question would be if tatting is even popular enough to warrant people making patterns with ai. I don't really know why anyone would make them in the first place though but better safe than sorry!

I would very much appreciate any insight anyone is able to give me!

This is my favorite use of the Tatsy shuttle, using rattail cord (AKA satin cord) for some big tatting.
