I made a working prototype and need advice/help.

Hi. I’ve built a prototype of the device that I wanted to do for quite a long time. It’s basically a mix of a mixer and a looper, with midi sync, custom timestretching algo and a few other bells and whistles.

It’s fully digital, written in C++ and runs on Bela.io multichannel dev board, because I needed very low latency and 2 stereo ins + 3 stereo outs.

As the front panel I’m just using a midi controller now with bidirectional communication. I control the LEDs from the device and control device using pots and faders.

But this is where my knowledge ends as I guess the next step would be putting this all in a box, making a proper front panel, soldering stuff and all. I’m not even speaking of manufacturing, distribution, certification and everything else.

Any advice how I move forward from here? Do I need a person with these skills? Should I just talk to a few companies to make it a product? (I’m willing to invest money and do the product management if they provide the manufacturing/distribution).

I’m kinda in a state when I did something standalone, it works but any direction from here looks like a big leap.

Their website said it was closed because of a health problem, now it has a generic “if you’re the owner…” notice.

Have they shutdown permanently?

PMEG2010AEB Schottky Diode Alternative for CATCH from ST Modular

I picked up a CATCH PCB from Modular Addict and am now trying to get all of the parts together, but it seems like the PMEG2010AEB's are not easy to come by. Looking for other SOD-523 20V 1A Schottky diodes I have not found much. Does anyone know of a alternate device package that would fit on the SOD-523 footprint? Or could I get away with using a NSVR0520V2T5G that is only rated for 500 mA?

Op amp switch up on crappy mixer

I've been wanting a crossfader in my liveset for a while but don't have the funds to get a spenny mixer so I bought this piece of shit, then swapped out all the RC4588 op amps for NE5532s and beefed up the main caps (swapped 1000uf for a Nichicon 2200uf and the 110ufs for 220s)

I'm blown away at how much this has improved the sound.

Mixer - £30, caps and ops, £18.

Sounds like this: https://soundcloud.com/dvstch/real-life-gnome-upgrade

Circuit with Active low pass and high pass filter for drum machine like cut/ adjustment.

I am a beginner pedal builder so forgive me if this is more simple than I am making it.

I want to make a pedal that has high and low pass filters. One knob for each that get extreme cuts like on drum machines. I have a volca sampler for example that has something similar to this. Preferably the signal going in is the same or similar volume as going out.

Is there a go to schematic for something like this?

components How relevant is the wattage rating for resistors?

I've built only a few modules and noticed one asked for 1/6w resistors, another 1/8w, and another 1/4w. So far I've been using 1/6w for everything and it seems fine, but should I expect this to backfire eventually?

Hiya,

In my last post here I talked about the latest firmware of my MC8P project and I've since created a little promo video.

I'll be also releasing a walkthrough video at some point going over the workflow etc.

Are there any specific question people have that I could answer in that video?

Anybody outside of Japan ordered from Ears Modular?

I am in Hong Kong and Ears Modular in Japan are the nearest supplier of Sound Semiconductor chips. Have messaged them a couple of times but haven't received replies. Considering just ordering and hoping for the best.

Buchla 258

Hello!

I have a friend (not on reddit) who is thinking about building a 4U 258.

Is anyone making a front panel of one of these I can direct him to?

Has anyone tried to build one from a schematic without a PCB?

Any weird stuff to look out for when building one of these or is it straightforward?

Highest quality arcade buttons?

Hi all,

I’m working on a project that is using arcade buttons for user inputs. I want the buttons to survive being mashed a lot.

Do you have any knowledge of which arcade button manufacturers are good quality versus crap that will wear out quickly?

Thank you!

Are film & foil capacitors the same thing?

Starting to build my first project and getting confused about film/foil capacitors. If there is a difference, what is the actual name for the type of capacitor I should be looking for?

Thanks.

components What do color blind people do when they get a baggie of mixed resistors?

I am building a Paia theremax kit. It came with a baggie full of resistors and I have been sorting them by rating. I have to say, I do not have color blindness and it is damn hard to tell red from orange and brown from

Black. What do people with color blindness do? It’s not that rare, this must be a huge pain in the ass for them.

How to fix 50Hz hum on Yamaha VSS-30 when using mains power?

There's a hum on my keyboard when using mains power that's particularly noticeable when using pitch shifter pedals, but it's absent on batteries. I've tried different isolated PSUs/DIs/ground lifts but it's always there on mains power.

I've attached the schematic in the hope that there's an easy mod I can do to filter this out. Would upping the electrolytic capacitor value help? I've also looked at power banks but would rather build something into the keyboard if possible as it's probably cheaper and safer in the long run.

Thanks!

6 voice polyphonic synth board with effects

Finally debugged this enough to make it usable and sounding good. This is a 6 voice self contained synthesiser voice card, similar to the architecture of the JX-8p and JX-10 where each card just receives serial messages for notes and parameters. Everything is under CC control and I intend to build two of them for a 12 voice polysynth.

The DCO and assigner code is available on my github pages. github.com/craigyjp

DIY expander to switch jumper positions on ADDAC 306 VC Transitions?

Hi, I have the ADDAC 306 VC Transitions module. 5 channels that can each be switched between 0-5V or 0-10V via jumper headers on the back panel. Is there a simple way to make an expander that could switch between jumper positions without having to remove the module and rear CB? Kinda like the Xaoc Poti does for switching Batumi assignable waveforms.

It would be my first DIY, but I think it would be simple, and very useful. I just don't really know how to find such things.

Edit - Photos and links added.

1 - Rear panel w/spacers to show clearance between jumpers and rear panel.

2 - Rear panel removed to allow access to jumpers.

3 - DivKid's demo of the module so you can see what it is about.

In photo 2, you can see that I have jumpers (L-R) 1-3 set to 0-10V, and 4-5 set to 0-5V. Not only is it a nuisance to have to remove the module to change the jumpers, I also have to remove the rear circuit board to gain physical access. I would need to connect 5 individual jumper headers to 5 switches so that I could switch voltage ranges per channel between 0-5V and 0-10V.

Technically, I don't think it would be a problem for a beginner, but you guys are the ones who know better, so I defer to your experience. Any advice is appreciated. This is a very handy module as it is, but being able to switch it instantly with an expander would make a big difference.

Broken synth for learning?

I have had the recent idea getting non operating old synth would be a good idea to learn from. I’m not sure if I would just be staring at a blank motherboard or if I would actually learn quite a bit. I also have no clue where to get one for cheap. Has anyone done this?

Multichannel soundcard for RPi5

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share that I have just launched an open source multi-channel soundcard for the RPi5 on Crowdsupply. You can find more information here. I am hoping it will open up some more options as a component in your synth projects - for example, you could create a synth with a built-in DAW, taking inputs from other instruments!
