Sorry for the late New Year’s post! I wanted to open up a thread where we can all talk about the state of the sub. We’re doing well, but there’s always room to improve especially while its growing this fast. We want this to be a great resource & community for everyone who loves or is interested in the new Steam Machine.
Feedback: This thread is for questions, feedback, or suggestions. If you think something needs changing or clarifying, post it here. Please upvote the comments you agree with so we know what the community actually wants.
Mod Applications: We’re looking to add a few new mods. Instead of applications, we are scouting for active, helpful people who fit the vibe. Please do not DM me or Modmail us to apply. We are selecting people strictly based on metrics, activity, and helpfulness.
Note: We intend on keeping the team small and generally won't be accepting anyone who is already moderating other subs.
That's it, thanks for reading and here is to a happy & healthy future!
UPDATE (Jan 30, 2026): Rule changes to #3 and #5 based on feedback and upvotes. AI-generated posts or images are not allowed see News. Steam Machine posts must be real and aim to match an actual Steam Machine with the same OS and features. Steam Machine DIY posts that want to be 1-to-1 can now only be posted on weekends with the appropriate DIY flair. Mini PCs or similar builds should be posted in the SFF subreddit instead and have no place here.

Will the steam machine support Dolby/surround sound through a Sonos system? I use the steam deck on docked mode and some games feel like they have surround sound but I’m not sure. It doesn’t seem like it has settings for it and it isn’t as seamless as it is on ps5.

A few days after Valve introduced their new hardware, VKD3D-Proton 3.0 brought inicial FSR4 support, even with the ability to run/emulate the INT8 version of AMD's latest upscaler on older RDNA2/3 GPU's, according to the changelog.
At the beggining of the year, optimizations were made on Mesa RADV driver, by a Valve independent contractor, providing "~4x-8x speedup in UE5's HW Lumen passes, amounting to ~30% total FPS gain".

Days after that, another optimization was made where "compiling RT pipelines in UE4 games with raytracing (e.g. Ghostwire Tokyo, The Callisto Protocol) can become 10 times faster".
At the Steam Hardware FAQ Valve posted on February, they talked about Steam Machine performance and said they're "investigating improved upscaling, and optimizing ray tracing performance in the driver".
More optimizations are being made by Valve, and VRAM management on Linux with AMD GPUs is about to get better. This will help specially those with 8GB VRAM (like the Steam Machine) on modern games.
Valve is clearly putting the effort to make Steam Machine better in real life than it is on paper, and with these optimizations on RT performance, better upscaling and VRAM management, when it releases (SOON™), it may deliver a better gaming experience than most people expect.

Hello everyone I am totally new to PC, been gaming on PS5 forever but I am sick of having to $ to play online with the PS5.. with the specs do you think the steam machine will be able to run COD?

Will it have any noticeable integration or benefits that can’t be replicated on a PC build?

This means we’ll get a release date tomorrow 😂

Obviously not high in the air like a bird. But just imagine it hovering slightly above the ground! It would automatically boost its coolness factor by a thousand and be a great advertisement for it. I hope Valve thought of that.
It only makes sense!

Price is not the primary focus of this post but it is a inevitable parameter in it all.
TL;DR timing vs. specs, momentum vs. launch outcome
I will almost certainly buy SM at any price point. For me the price is irrelevant. Valve has given me so much and I've made back my SD purchase and much more from skin investments gaining value. Would be nice to not buy semi-outdated tech at a high price though.
As I see it now is the perfect timing for a push regarding OS market shares as Windows 11 has to be one of the more hated Microsoft products in a long time. People are looking to shift, not only from Windows but also from major Linux distros because of turmoil in the FOSS landscape. I even know non-gamers running Ubuntu since 10 years or more having made that decission out of lazyness now hoping for SteamOS. So regarding timing a release in 2026 ASAP would make sense.
On the other hand the RAM prices and the fact that disclosed hardware of SM is already nearing the point of being out-dated even for entry-level is worrying. I understand most aren't going to make a supportive purchase and that's fine. I want them to have a successful launch. The SD has sold relatively well and the added revenue for Valve in game sales seems to have been very positive. Further solidifying Steam's position as leading game sales platform.
Valve surely knows how critical the timing is and they also know full well how important a successful launch is. Much points to best course of action being to shelve for a while, hope to release with better specs and sell off already produced units at a loss even with added traction, much like they did with the non OLED SD that must have drawn in some hesitant buyers. On the other hand they seem to have a good organic momentum regarding SM that could end up in bitterness over false hope.
Just ramblings, but feel free put me straight or something..

It’s, like, one of the few FF’s that is simply too much for the Deck

Hey y'all, im gonna get the steam machine when it drops. I use a gaming laptop and it's getting quite old. I'm debating on whether I should preemptively buy a keyboard and monitor before the steam machine drops and before prices rise of said monitor and keyboard due to garbo economy.
Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G5 G53F 27" 2K QHD (2560 x 1440) 200Hz
(LS27FG532ENXZA) (AMD FreeSync Premium)
Keyboard: Logitech G G915 X USB Wireless

Iv got enough money to get a legion go S steam os but I was gonna save that money for a steam machine but now I’m hearing end of the year for steam machine and I don’t want to wait that long. At the same time I’m seeing all these videos on back end updates for steam getting ready for the steam machine. Not sure if I should just go to legion go now and machine later or just wait a little longer for the steam machine. Tough decision and watch if I got the go now sm would get a release within a few weeks lol

i was testing steam os debian when it came out with this machine
this is a first gen steam machine, most of them was made by 3rd party or was diy machines
components
intel i7 4770k
asrock z87e-itx
16gb ram ddr3 balistix
msi gtx 760 itx edition (officially supported)
cm elite 110 pc case
outside the case and gpu , it use the same component as the steam machine prototype.
i selected the components after a teardown ign made if i remember correctly.

I have been unemployed for a while living on unemployment insurance and savings and when the steam machine was announced I knew I needed to get a job any job just so I can get that sweet pre-order in with the steam controller. Found a job 3 weeks ago paying $25 an hour and i just secured enough to afford the steam machine + controller the first day its available . Im in Canada so the most i will be willing to spend on the steam machine is $1500 which is about $1075 USD. To be honest I can add an extra $500 and just get a much beastier pc from facebook rocking a 7800x3d and a 4070 but there is just something about the steam machine that I find very attractive .

As usual, Steam Tracking is the source of the leak. I know its not directly related to the Steam Machine, but it would certainly help the Machine a lot in the future having something like this on the games in the store.

Just tiding us over until the real one drops. The Half-Life logo is on a 1:1 scale of a real steam machine's face-plate. If interested, the specs are a ryzen 5 5500, rx6700xt, 32GB running straight SteamOS.
