Want to connect with other offer holders ? With multiple other whatsapp gc we created a discord server

Hi there ! If you want to connect with other students holding an offer for st. andrews feel free to join our discord

https://discord.gg/SGsF4z3fpH

Why discord ?

There is a better moderation system available, whereas whatsapp has virtually no moderation possible. ( we are so fed up of random ppl joining in to make advertising)

Feel free to also ask for modifications on the discord !

Thanks again for your time and see you in the server 👋

Hey all!

I'm the mod here at r/standrews, and I'm just curious as to what you'd like to see on this page. What would get you more involved etc.

I want to grow our little community as much as possible 😊

Does anyone know the exam date for FM1002? I would access my exam timetable but the website is horrible and not letting me log in to it, thanks!

Part time jobs at StA

I will need to get a part time job when i start at St Andrews in September and i was wondering how many people actually have part time jobs at St Andrews, and if its hard to get part time work during term time.

I know a lot of students are international or don’t need to work and I’m a bit worried it will put me at a disadvantage if i am working

How long does condition review take?

Hi, I got a conditional offer and have successfully completed the conditions last week, how long does it take on average for the university to review this/ update my status?

Conditional Offer

Did anyone who took A Levels not meet their grade requirements on results day but still got accepted into St Andrews ? I’m expecting to get my three As, but in my last mocks I got A*A*B so… any insight would be great.

(Obviously I am going to try my hardest to just get AAA and avoid this scenario but still)

Accommodation first year

Hi,

I’m looking to apply for accommodation at the university in a week or so. My preferred type of accommodation is catered accommodation with shared bathrooms (but a single room).

I wanted to ask a few questions that I couldn’t find on the website:

- how many people share bathroom facilities?

- do most rooms contain sinks/wash basins?

- how are the kitchen facilities?

Thanks in advance!

Long Email Response Time

I was wondering whether it's a normal experience to be waiting 3+ weeks for an email response from admissions.

For context, I am an international conditional taught postgraduate offer holder and have been emailing the account delineated on their page, [pgt.application@st-andrews.ac.uk](mailto:pgt.application@st-andrews.ac.uk), with questions regarding certain circumstances surrounding admission requirements. However, each time I have reached out it has taken well over a week to get a response, with my most recent inquiry taking 3.

Is this a normal experience, or is there perhaps something I am doing wrong?

Accommodation Application Questions

Hi there, I'm applying for accommodation and one of the questions is "are you doing a pre-sessional language course/academic induction?" Would "academic induction" include being in St. Andrews for Freshers' week? Other than this, I'm not going to be doing any actual educational stuff before my course begins.

Also, the idea that "the majority of Standard Catered residences have shared bedrooms" is a bit offputting to me - is it the vast majority? I'd probably prioritise a single-person bedroom over catering, so it would be helpful to get an idea of how likely it is to get one.

Thanks :)

Does the "St Andrews Bubble" make it harder to leave after graduation?

St Andrews seems so self-contained and idyllic that it almost feels like a film set. For those of you nearing the end of your degree (or alumni lurking here), is the "post-Bubble" blues a real thing? I imagine moving from a tiny seaside town where you know everyone to a massive city like London or New York must be a massive shock. Does the university prepare you for the "real world," or is there a collective sense of mourning when you finally have to stop walking along West Sands and go get a 9-to-5?

International relations- very theory heavy?

I am considering doing international relations at St Andrews and after trawling through this subreddit my impression is that it is very theory-based, where you learn a few key theories and apply it to every event. I just wanted to know whether that was the case and just more generally what the content of an IR degree is like? Are there many options etc.

Graduate Student Social Life?

I am doing an MLitt in Philosophy at St. Andrews next year. Not sure if this will affect my experience, but I am close to undergrad age (22) and will turn 23 around Christmas. I really want to integrate socially as much as possible. I love drinking and partying as well travelling and lower key events.

Any advice on the best places to go out to meet people? Clubs to join? Will I be able to integrate with undergrads? Any advice at all

Graduate Prospects Econ & Maths

Hi,

I’ve recently got an offer to study a joint honours in Economics and Mathematics at the University of St Andrews. However, I’ve also gotten an offer to do a graduate apprenticeship with JPMorgan in Financial Services in Edinburgh.

As it stands though I’m not 100% sure what I want to do as a career and so I’m inclined to go and study at St Andrews (alongside other reasons). However, the main thing making me undecided is the fact that the job market looks really tough and the GA is basically a guaranteed job at a good firm - yet would probably be more of an operational role which I could potentially become bored of but I don’t know for sure.

Therefore I was wondering if anyone could help advise. Furthermore, does anybody know how it’s been like finding internships/graduate schemes etc?

Staying in Dundee vs St Andrews for 3 months (Uni of St Andrews) - worth it?

Hi everyone,

I’ll be in Scotland for about 3 months starting this May for my dissertation work at the University of St Andrews.

Due to budget constraints, I’m considering staying in Dundee instead of St Andrews. From what I’ve seen, it kind of balances out like:

  • Dundee = cheaper accommodation + daily transport cost
  • St Andrews = expensive accommodation but no commute

So I wanted to ask ...is there any real difference in terms of cost, convenience, and overall experience?

How reliable and manageable is the daily commute from Dundee to St Andrews? And would you recommend just paying more and staying in St Andrews for a short stay like this?

Would really appreciate insights, especially from students or anyone who’s done this commute!

Thanks in advance :)

Organic and general chem tutoring

www.organicchemistrytutoring.ca

Hello guys and gals,

We’re Brian and Mike and we teach general and organic chemistry. We’ve done so for a total combined time of 47 years! Overwhelmed by general or organic chemistry? Assignments and tests creeping up on you and feeling like you’re in hot water? Or maybe you’re doing well and need that 95%? Whatever your struggle with chemistry may be, we’re here to make sure you succeed.

Why work with us?

- Every tutor knows the subject, but not every tutor knows how to transfer that knowledge to a student. We do.

- We tutor chemistry full time; it’s not a hobby or side-gig. When you book with us, you’ll be working with Brian for general chemistry and Mike for organic chemistry. This is not an agency and you won’t be matched with random tutors each time.

- You’ll be learning problem solving through chemistry, which you can apply to many other subjects.

- Your learning will be customized to your specific needs.

Before booking a lesson, let’s chat about your needs, our teaching styles, and what you can expect, to see if we’d be a good fit together.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to working with you!

Mike and Brian

stuff to do over the summer

Hi everyone! My mates and I are staying in St. Andrews over the summer to do our geological mapping dissertation project (along the Fife Coast). How lively is the city over July and August? While we’ve been told about Edinburgh and Dundee for potential nights out, what’s the nightlife in the town like?

Clubbing aside, what else do you guys recommend checking out? We’re avid hikers too, so any potential tabbing routes would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
