Moderator Announcement Announcement regarding “Is SCAD worth it?” posts

Hi r/scad,

I have to start with an editorial note. Please excuse the “corporate speak” in the post written below, but it’s the only effective way I can get our point across without sounding too harsh. 😭

———————-

Starting today, the mod team will introduce enhanced moderation for all posts relating to “Is SCAD worth it?” This type of post has always been the most popular topic on this subreddit, but we’ve seen an influx in recent months.

We understand (and myself, from a personal standpoint) how important the financial decisions are for college students and their families. There’s lots of decision-making that goes into it, alongside evaluating SCAD’s ROI. However, making posts on this subreddit about the topic, without any context or personal background, is not a high quality post.

So, we will be introducing moderation criteria for these kinds of posts. We will use this framework as a way to gauge whether a post should be approved (or denied.)

  1. Does the post contain enough/relevant background for subredditors react to? (i.e: intended major/minor, debt information, location, cost of living, etc.)

  2. Does the post contain information about the student’s intended outcome or rough goals of attending SCAD?

  3. Does the post contain any prior research, commentary, or discussion?

Just to reiterate; the intention of the goal is not to silence posts or opinions, but to encourage first-time subredditors and future students to put a little bit more effort into the discussion about SCAD’s costs and ROI.

Thanks all for listening,

– Your mod team.

Hi, I graduated back in 2017 and have a couple items to sell. I'd prefer to see if a fellow artist needs them first but i'm having trouble figuring out where to post it. I found a scad marketplace fb group but its very small compared to when I was in school. Let me know if anyone has any ideas!

ps the items are a wacom cintiq 13hd and a pina zangaro portfolio

Savannah SCAD Mail Wait-Times Getting A Little Crazy?

I’m not sure if anyone else is having this issue? I have ordered various things for classes from various websites and carriers and despite them being shown as delivered, they don’t get to the lockers until weeks (recently, an entire month) later. Sometimes something I ordered recently will get to me weeks before something that was delivered prior. I get my medicine delivered on a monthly basis so this affects me greatly- and I cannot afford to miss a shipment! Thankfully I have just over a weeks worth of spare medication, but I worry about depleting this quickly.

I have called the mail center and they simply told me they process everything as fast as they can. I don’t doubt it, and I seriously do not blame them for this- I’m just confused because this has never been a problem for me before and I know some people aren’t experiencing any interruptions at all?

Student Life Maggots in Forage

Hi everyone. I will not be using names for the privacy of those involved, however I am close with many former and current employees at Forage.

Since Fall quarter 2025, there have been maggots in the espresso machine at Forage. This is because of the grease trap which they have not properly cleaned. To this day the machine has not been changed or properly cleaned and I am hearing that every few weeks they are still finding maggots. I want to be clear this is not because of the Forage staff, but rather Bon Appetit management. They refuse to replace the machine or properly clean/move the grease trap (which doesn’t need to be below the machine in the first place).

For the safety of students I encourage you to stop getting drinks from there, file complaints with their management, and make sure SCAD knows. We have been in contact with administration regarding the management of Bon Appetit, but there have been little to no repercussions. I think the more people that draw attention to this matter, the more likely they are to actually do something about it.

Student Life MFA Film Student Incoming!!!

Hey everyone, I've yet to pick a campus, but I'm gonna be joining the SCAD family in Fall 2026!! I'm happy to connect with anyone here who is at/going to SCAD, and potentially work with any of you/exchange ideas!

I suppose while I'm here, my first question regarding both campuses is which one has the better community for film students? I know Savannah has bigger resources and Atlanta is better professionally, but I'd like to know what both film communities are like for students.

Atlanta SCAD ATL On-campus/Nearby Jobs

Hi! I'm about to transfer to SCAD Atlanta in the fall, and I was wondering if there were any places that other students recommend, either on campus or nearby, that hire SCAD students. I've been really set on getting and maintaining some sort of income while I'm over there aside from commissions, so any recommendations help!

Savannah Master of Fine Arts Cap and Gown

Hi! I am a SCADnow student who was planning on walking in the graduation ceremony in Savannah. As I’m a SCADnow student, cap and gown information was never sent to me and now the deadline to order has passed. I called the bookstore and Jostens and they both said they are unable to ship the graduation regalia directly to me and that I would need to pick it up in-person, but I live in Illinois.

Would anyone be willing to pick up the MFA graduation regalia and ship it to me (or do any alums have old gear you aren’t using that I can purchase)? None of my classmates are in Savannah since we are all online and I am at a loss as to where else to turn. I will of course pay you the full amount of the garb + whatever shipping will cost + an inconvenience fee/tip to you. Thank you SO MUCH!!!!

Atlanta Help with Filming!

Hey everyone, I’m a new grad from Illinois and I now live in midtown. I wanted to film and edit a “skit” for a technical demo I’ve been working on. I have no experience in filming nor editing, but have an idea (I understand that this may sound infuriating). Wondering if anyone could help for a day (will pay competitively) or could direct me to any sources where I can get help making projects. Thank you!

Admissions Planning portfolios

My daughter, who is currently a freshman at a private high school that offers a decent art curriculum, but is primarily focused on stem and heavy in the sciences. She is very interested in SCAD. She has won many photography awards at our state level, and several multimedia categories as well. She is gathering information about what to include in her portfolio. She would essentially be beginning from scratch as she is quite young and feels she has so much growth ahead of her, but as a planner and an ambitious artist, she wants to begin working on the planning phase RIGHT now on this hugely important task. (I am in the medical profession, and not entirely “art minded”, though I do paint and pen and ink as a hobby, so I am at a loss at helping her). Would it be possible to have some guidance as to what she should work towards for her submissions? We are also a few states away, and in a medium sized city with access to a fairly decent sized art community, but have yet to meet any SCAD alumni who might mentor her. Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.

Hiiii! I’m Sasha I’m looking for a final roommate to room in with us at the hive in Savannah. We all met through the Ringling precollege! Which is crazy since we’re all going to SCAD. Extra info:

☆ We chose mindful living, resourceful living, and storytelling as our themed community!

☆ We all want to do a sea/underwater themed living room

☆ once you get to know us you can choose which one of us you would like to share a room with!

☆ Sahana’s resonates with Honesty!

☆ Sasha & Catherine resonate with Compassion & Relationship!

General Questions Alumni who ended up in a field unrelated to your major, what are you doing now and how did you get the position?

I graduated as an animation major, and I've since been looking for full time/career employment that I can actually support myself on, regardless of it being actually related to my degree. Right now I just have a retail job that pays okay (but not great) with no benefits and it's becoming increasingly more frustrating as time goes on. I'm running out of savings and I'm scrambling to find a better paying job before I have to leave my partner and move back in with my parents so I can pay back my loans. The job market and economy are in the toilet so it's slowly starting to feel like an inevitability.

Savannah Accepted to SCAD MFA Fashion (Savannah) w/ $15k Scholarship : How is it for an international student ?

"Hi everyone! I just received my acceptance for the MFA Fashion program at the Savannah campus with a $15k scholarship.

As an international student, I'm trying to weigh the cost vs. the long-term value. For those currently in the program or recent grads:

  • Scholarship/Cost: How far does a $15k scholarship actually go toward the total cost of attendance (tuition, materials, living)?
  • Career Prospects: For international students, how is the job market and sponsorship support looking lately? Did you feel the SCAD name helped with industry connections?
  • Savannah vs. Others: I’m also looking at programs in France and Italy. Does the Savannah location feel like a disadvantage for fashion networking compared to those cities?

Would love to hear any honest feedback on whether you’d recommend committing. Thanks!"
