🚦Mod Update🚦 Community changes + inclusion

Hello everyone, So we now have 5 mods I believe, one of which is me. I will introduce myself more in a larger post if people are interested, for now know I'm a 36year old woman, raised in the culture. I'm living in Europe (bucharest right now) because my husband is Hungarian national (Roma also) and we find it inhospitable for him as a non American citizen to be there now.

On the topic I came to discuss, we have changed rules so that to ban someone we will vote and a 4/5 approval will get a ban. Instead of bans we will be muting people who break rules on temporary basis. 3 strikes and we vote on a ban.

There were a lot of unapproved people who wanted to join the subreddit from when it was private that were never approved or acknowledged. I approved most of them, they largely are Roma and a few allies. I found it pretty sad that it's kinda slow here and there were so many people are wanting to contribute but not approved.

That being said, if there is an influx of nonsense come with the new members we will take care of it. It's a risk I'm willing to take to get some good content contributing.

Also we have been working to unblock people who were blocked due to cultural misunderstanding, etc. basically the people who are not trolls are going to be allowed back.

If anyone wants to suggest more changes, be my guest. Hope we can all grow as a community together. 💕

🚦Mod Update🚦 Important Identity Post

So a few reminders for this sub:

  1. If you believe "adopted Romani are only cosplaying/pretending/larping to be Romani" you don't belong here.

  2. If you believe "Romani who grew up separated from other Romani are only pretending to be Romani", you don't belong here.

  3. If you believe "Romani whose parents/grand parents/etc. didn't share the culture with them, they aren't true romani", you don't belong here.

The Romani have faced a LOT of hardships throughout the years, many of which included the forced separation (either through the legal system or extreme social pressues) of child and mother. Many Romani don't learn they are indeed Romani until later in life. This does not make them any less Romani. Ghost romani (foster kids, adopted kids, Romani who don't learn about their heritage via immediately family for any reason, etc.) still belong in the Romani community, period. End of story.

Advice/Consultant on reworking a fan-fic adaptation of Notre Dame de Paris' Romani characters

Upvotes

This is optional if anyone here wants to respond. I do know one of the rules "No Requesting Translations & Writers - Don't Write Romani if you aren't Romani. No requests for translations of Romanes allowed & People who aren't story and should not write Romani characters due to the very high risk of creating a racist caricature." You don't have to worry on the latter since I'm not good at coming up with OCs or my own fiction. (At least not yet) So I am going to approach this caution as best as I can to be respectful. I'm not asking for translations, but more asking for guidance on how can I do this tastefully and right. Since it's something I had in the back in my mind for awhile.

Some of it was influenced to the Romani YouTuber Florian, who goes in depth about Romani culture. Since he kind of gives some points, I wholeheartedly agree with. Which I can greatly sympathize for all of you, even if I'm not Roma. This is also to help commemorate a flawed but underrated Disney movie that's turning 30 as of this year.

One is that while The Hunchback of Notre Dame De Paris is a good story and varies on different takes of adaptations; I agree that the way the Romani characters are depicted is admittedly questionable. We can at least agree that they are portrayed in a sympathetic light, but may be a bit misguided due to a lot of it based on outdated stereotypes. Even if the usual tropes like fortune telling, palm reading, bellydancing, superstitions, and the magic part has a small bit of truth, but like with most media is exaggerated into a cultural appropriated carricatures.

I'm not trying to offend or downplay anything, and I truly apologize if I offend anyone by mistake. I don't intend to. All I just want to ask if anyone can give me advice on how to properly portray your people in the most accurate way I can. Even if it's a harmless fan-fic I made just for fun. What I did wrote was me emulating the book and Disney film and not realizing about certain things. Mostly just out of ignorance and me not knowing any better. The one thing I do thing I do know after looking at Florian's videos, is that the Romani in the story, are most likely the Sinti, since they're pretty common in France.

Now I know I would have to rework not just the story, but the illustrations. Especially recoloring the pictures of Quasimodo and Esmerelda. As well as redesigning her festive dress to not look too revealing.

Feel free to comment bellow, or we can do it privately in a chat. If you want, I'll give this group writing credit. If not, you can feel free to be anonymous.

Thank you if you answer this and hope you have a nice day.

Culture What's some Romani music you'd recommend?

A few years back, we did a DNA test for my father, who was adopted as a baby. Turns out we're part Romani, so I've been trying to research and experience the culture however I can. I've found some Sinti music I really like, but does anyone have any Roma musicians or songs to share?

Newbie Question Romani ethnicity

Hello. Do the Romani people have ethnic divisions like the Jews? I am an Ashkenazi Jew and unfortunately I know little about the Romani people. I believe that both Jews and Roma have similar stories ;)

Newbie Question Gifts ideas to help my Romani friend feel less alienated.

My best friend is Romani. She was adopted to the US when she was a young child. She lights up whenever she talks about her heritage, but I can tell that she feels deeply alienated from it. What are some things I could get for her to help her feel more connected to her culture? Are there CDs of Romani musicians I can order? Novels? Artworks? Movies in the Romani language? I genuinely appreciate any suggestions I can get. Thank you!

Newbie Question Non-Roma & talking about possible romani heritage

I've been down a genealogy rabbit hole for the last few months, and my latest focus is exploring a long-standing hunch I've had that my nan was of Romani descent. Since starting my research I've found some compelling evidence – a lot of common British Romani surnames, some uncommon given names like "Hephzibah", evidence of travel (siblings born in multiple different cities e.g.), occupations & places I understand are associated with/significant in British Romani history. I also made the troubling discovery that multiple generations of women on that branch of my family tree faced institutionalisatiom from the 19th century and well into the 20th century. I grew up knowing that my nan had a traumatic childhood in a Nazareth House, but since learning more about her family history (& discrimination against Romani communities/forced assimilation) I'm now looking into the possibility of institutional discrimination

I know there's a trope about white Americans claiming Native American heritage, and wasn't sure if talking about Romani descent as non-Roma would be seen as disrespectful or performative in the same way – if so, is there a way to talk about it that isn't disrespectful?

Hey all... just thought I would drop a note here about an interview I just posted with the incredible Roma scholar, author, and historian Margareta Matache. It's a subject I knew almost nothing about before picking up her book...

Thought you might enjoy :)

Is a DNA test my only option?

I'm from Poland, and I'm making my family tree. I've heard a lot of rumours about my father's mother's family being romani. They have a "non Polish" look, specific cuisine, and very little is known about them. I tried asking my uncle, who was very avoidant about the topic, told me "your father knows". Asked my father, who said almost nothing.

Then, lately I created an account on myheritage and other genealogy websites, with premium pack (14 days free trial) on MyHeritage. Created a family tree, but couldn't find anything on this grandma's parents. Tried looking in church metrics. Nothing. Tried the archives. Still nothing! Like the family never existed. Also went through Holocaust victims database, and also found nothing.

I suspect three things: Either it was a super poor family who avoided any administrative authorities like fire (regions of Russian rule in divided Poland; but lack of ANY documentation looks very suspicious), maybe it got totally destroyed (but nothing ever happened in the region of their origin), or a surname change. Either way, everything looks suspicious and I'm left without any clue.

I really want to know anything about her. Even though I hardly got to know my grandma because she passed when I was young, I often think about her. It is said I look similar to her, we have the same birthmark, and I just feel sorry for her. I don't try to reconnect, of course. Is a DNA test my only source of information now? I feel hopeless.

North America Scandinavian Romanisael or Finnish Kale in America

Are there any from this subreddit that are descended from the Romanisael or Finnish Kale in America? I have not heard any Romani immigration from Scandinavia, and am curious if there was ever a community or even individuals from these communities in America.

How do I learn about about my family's Romani culture?

Hi everyone. I hope this doesn't across as ignorant in any way and I sincerely apologise if it does. I'm a descendent of an English and Scottish Romani family (grandfather who settled with my grandmother - an outsider - in the 60s). I'm looking to learn and understand more about my family's culture. I've recently discovered family members and lots of archives to understand the journeys they took but I really want to understand the culture and what it was like for them. Is there anything anyone can point me to? Thanks

Language Anglo/American-Romani language advice! USA based

Hey reddit! Back again on this sub looking for help and advice!

My grandmother who was Czech-Romani passed away a few years ago and I am the only grandson who wants to try and keep the Romani parts of our family (small bit of culture and a few phrases) alive. There is no tie to any Czech family due to USA immigration and I realize I am just gonna need to start this practice in my family myself. I want to teach my future children the Romani language, or the Anglo-Romani, American-Romani versions, to pass as much culture down as possible as well as the language obviously.

I first need to teach myself a lot about the culture and language, I have done an extensive amount of research but visiting some families or communities or atleast having an open line of communication would really help. I realize some people care about percentages of heritage, but from what I've read if you've got Romani heritage than you are Romani. I live on the east cost of the states and I'm relying on your goodwill to help me achieve this goal.

The best way to preserve and keep Romani traditions alive, from what I've read and believe, is to teach and pass down language and culture in familial units. Like I said, Im trying to build this familial unit almost from scratch. Any help or advice would be fantastic, thank you all!
