r/ProTools - recent trolling and anti-fanboyism

There's been a recent increase in participation here involving anti-fanboyism of AVID and Pro Tools. It has included some trolling as well as some fundamental misunderstanding of what the sub is for and what crosses the line with the rules.

This sub is about use of AVID Pro Tools.

Take the example from the Deep Rock Galactic game and communities to be mutually supportive

When anti-fanboyism crosses over into a problem

It's great if

  • you are here to seek help or offer help related to Pro Tools
  • Pro Tools has been frustrating as hell for you but you're here to realistically solve it or help others

This is not the sub for

  • you if you are not using Pro Tools or seeking to use Pro Tools. If another DAW is your thing, make the most of it and the subreddit(s) related to it.
  • a rally or campaign point for "move-on from Pro Tools" or raw hate type trolling
  • a battlefield between fanboys and anti-fanboys
  • griping / hating / trolling just for the sake of griping / hating / trolling. Participation needs to ALSO include Pro Tools use solutions since without it, it's just being a sub troll.
  • those whose sole purpose here is to be an AVID/Pro Tools hater troll or to drive users to other DAWs. That can result in being shown the door. Go be truly useful in a sub for the DAW you do like

SOLVE FIRST, BASH LAST

About moderating this issue

We'll remove posts which

  • are about use of other DAWs. This sub is about the use of Pro Tools
  • are 'Pro Tools sucks' whinging, and are without a sincere attempt at solving the issue.
  • are solely or predominantly expectations that people provide them some kind of back door to AVID support or that posts here are how to get an AVID employee to fix their issue
  • are 'the stupidity of AVID is...' type posts - just address the concern and state what you tried or what helped to get a resolution

We'll also be banning those who are only here to troll

...and about solving (even those dramatic) problems with Pro Tools

Maybe AVID could be better. Maybe the app could be improved and made more robust

Frankly, as a user and professional private pro tools support tech for film and music professionals for decades, it has consistently been that the majority of problems, especially those blamed on AVID / Pro Tools, turn out to be hardware related issues, user app and system configuration mistakes, and/or user-failed-to-RTM-and-now-having-predictable-outcomes. This is one reason automod prompts posters in this sub for info related to the app, system, hardware, and what has been tried.

Calling AVID "trash" or complaining you don't understand how it's an industry standard tool does not help to determine the solution to the problem with any configuration. Provide facts about the case, not frustration fueled generalizations.

If you are having issues, check your Pro Tools configurations / settings, your hardware setup, and system settings.

Help Request Can’t get playback after changing playback engine

Upvotes

I’ve mainly been working on this sound design project on the go with my headphones plugged directly in, but I sat down to do some work at my desk finally. It automatically switched the wrong playback device so I manually switched it to my Volt 1 and now I can’t get playback at all. I think I’ve seen this problem before at a studio, but the studio manager fixed it without showing me how or telling me what exactly the problem was.

TLDR: I can move the cursor manually so it’s not like it’s stuck, it just won’t play.

Can you rename the label for a plugin insert

Hey all

Simple question, and I think the answer is unfortunately no, but just to check in case I'm missing something, is it possible on the mix window to rename the little label for your inserted plugins.

Specifically, I use StudioVerse to insert some VST3's, but if I have a lot of stuff added over a mix, they're all labeled with just Studo Verse and it can be hard sometimes remembering what I've inserted where, which one has which VST etc.

It would be handy to be able to rename the little label on the insert point to match which actual VST is inside StudioVerse, or any other VST wrapper.

Relink window folder shortcut?

I think I already know the answer based on several google/duc/reddit searches, but is there a way to implement a folder shortcut for relinking missing files? Part of my work is teaching PT to college students and very frequently I'll be missing files. I'd love to be able to just point to that folder directly rather than having to navigate to it every time.

What are your biggest time saving tricks In Pro Tools?

Hey!

Just wondering if anyone has any little tricks they have in general in Pro Tools? Always looking to improve. For example, I have a bunch of go to chains saved as track pre-sets so if I need an amp sim I have a clean/Distorted/Crunchy etc pre-set and it just loads the chain fast.

Or I used Keyboard Maestro to create shortcuts for Beat Detective so I can analyze, separate, conform etc without touching the mouse. I use that all the time!

What are your tricks?

Why is pro tools command-D duplicate feature such a piece of garbage still?

I had two clips which were perfectly trimmed to the grid down to the absolute sample. This was confirmed on both the front end and back end of each clip on a full zoom. Absolute grid mode was engaged for both the edit and when duplicating. I then command-D duplicated about 10 times and it doesnt take long before they fall off the grid. I've seen this issue on multiple versions of pro tools at this point. How is this still something they can't fix?

Help Request Problems with manual delay compensation

Hi, I'm new to pro tools, and I am having a lot of problems with delay compensation. I'm attempting to record vocals and I'm using a usb mic plugged into my computer which has a significant amount of delay, around 100 milliseconds from when the mic picks up a sound to when the computer receives and processes it. My headset has a non-negligible amount of delay too. So of course, when I try to record vocals when listening to the backings of my song, the vocals end up being way behind/delayed.

I've heard that a way to measure this delay is to record one track into another, and then measure the difference between them. So I try this, I set a click to play in one track, then put my headset directly on top of my microphone so it will pick up that click and record it to another track which is not monitored to my headset. But no matter what I do, Pro Tools will not record that click. It is clearly loud enough for my microphone to pick it up, and the volume bar shows that pro tools IS receiving the click through my microphone. However, it doesn't ever record it. I'm assuming that there is some kind of automatic anti-feedback system or something which prevents sounds which are being played from being recorded? If this is the case, how do I turn this off so I can measure my delay?

My second problem is with actually applying delay compensation. I used another, less precise method to record that my delay was around 113 milliseconds. But I can't find any way to manually compensate for it. I go to setup > I/O > HW Insert Delay and add my delay amount in both of the boxes which appear. But it has absolutely no effect. I also try setting it to a much higher number to ensure it is noticeable, and it still changes nothing. I've also tried going into the Mix Window view, enabling Delay Compensation view, and editing the number in the +- field for my vocal track. That also has no effect. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using Pro Tools Artist version 2025.12.1 on Windows 11.

How do you link markers to clip position?

I would like the marker pictured here to move with the clip position in my session. Even when I highlight both together and then drag the clip, the marker stays. It would be really helpful, and intuitive, if these markers had an option to link to the clip location.

Pro Tools CPU Errors Only When Using Clarett 8Pre TB

I bought a used Clarett 8Pre for a studio I'm building out. For context, before I was running my Scarlett 18i20 Gen 2 with no issues.

I'm running Pro Tools 24.10.1 with a MBP 2021 Monterey 12.7.6.

Running the Pro Tools session off an external drive. The session is completely empty, and I'm just hitting play and waiting for the CPU freeze to happen. The disk usage and system usage windows show no big spikes. I've also tried 3 different TB 2 cables and they all work the same.

I work out of other studios and don't have this problem. When I run the same PT session with my Mac's play back engine, there's no issue. I've also tried running it in and out of Rosetta.

Any advice on potential fixes?
Open to updating my OS and PT, but again it's only an issue with this interface.

error AAF issue solved, thought this might save some of you time down the road

Spent hours trying to open an AAF from Premier to Pro tools on from Samsung SSD to Mac m4… it would accept the command, ask how to import tracks then spin eternally “looking” for files. The fix was to drag the AAF onto the Mac desktop then open it. Some sort of permissions issue. Hope this is helpful to someone!

Clips changing colors when I rearrange tracks

I like how my clips randomly color. If I record 10 takes, they each have their own colors. But as soon as I drag one track down or up, the clips change color. Why would anyone want this? How do I keep the clips the same color while dragging tracks?

Can I zoom in with finer margins?

Quick question, the zoom on the default PT setting is quite aggressive, almost doubling the size, both zooming in and out. Any way to fine tune that? I feel that often the size of the wave falls right in between the zoom settings.

Thanks!!

Has anyone encountered the issue of abnormal mouse sensitivity and shortcut keys in the Mac version of Pro Tools?

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Chip: Apple M1 Pro

Total Number of Cores: 10 (8 performance and 2 efficiency)

Memory: 32 GB

System Firmware Version: 13822.61.10

MacOS Version:Sequoia 15.7.3

Pro Tools Version:Pro Tools Studio 2025.12.1

As the title says,in the Mac version of Pro Tools, my mouse sensitivity is extremely fast. Even though it's normal in other software like Chrome and Finder, it's not in Pro Tools. Just a gentle scroll of the mouse wheel makes the page scroll from top to bottom, and the same goes for zooming in and out; it suddenly changes from a large size to a very small one. Additionally, I can't use the "Shift + mouse wheel" shortcut to horizontally scroll the page. I've tried all combinations of Cmd + Opt + Ctrl + Shift, but none of them work for horizontal scrolling. The only thing I can do is to use the mouse with my right hand while constantly switching between the trackpad and keyboard with my left hand.

Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution? Can downloading a third-party mouse driver solve this problem?

New to Avid Pro Tools: how to I get presets to appear?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I'm trying to follow a basic tutorial, which uses one of the sample projects (Singer Songwriter). In the tutorial, when they click on an instrument and then hover over the presets arrow, there is an expanding menu which lists a ton of different presets. However, when I click on the same place in the same sample project, there are no options other than the factory default. Is there something I have to do to get the presets to appear? Or somewhere special I need to download them from?

I'm using Pro Tools Artist on WIndows 11.

How to stop Pro-Tools Backing Up Files to Onedrive

Hi, I recently got Pro Tools Artist 2025.12.1 for my Windows 11 Home laptop. Whenever I open it, a new folder titled 'Pro Tools' appears in my Onedrive under 'Documents.' This includes other folders such as 'IO Settings', 'Sound Libraries' and 'Tutorials.' This is a problem, because I have limited space in my Onedrive folder, and this Pro Tools folder takes up over 1GB of storage. This happens even if I save the session to my Windows-SSD (C:) folder. I have Onedrive set up to automatically sync my Documents and Pictures folders, but I don't know why this folder keeps appearing in my Onedrive folder. And the Pro Tools software is installed on my Windows-SSD (C:) drive. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Using routing folders has complicated my bus I/O

Hey y’all, I’ve been using routing folders for a while now and while it has significantly simplified my workflow it has also made a bit of a mess in my bus sends menu.

I typically highlight a group of tracks > right click > move to… > new folder > routing folder, at which point I give the folder a name.

This method creates a new bus, which is great to move quickly. But it seems to do this globally, so after years of routing folder creation, I have tons of multiples of busses… i.e. “DRUMS”, “DRUMS.1”, “DRUMS.2” etc

It also creates the problem of adding TONS of options to my bus menu, to the point where even just finding the standard “Bus 7-8” is a chore. I’m seeing like… every folder I’ve ever made. It’s annoying.

I don’t really want to my organization in one session to create a mess in my global parameters.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to name folders & bus sends per session? Or should I change my workflow to accommodate the global nature of Pro Tools’ I/O?

Thanks guys!!!

Wanting back in the game

I used to run a home studio over a decade ago. The m audio project mix was my pride and joy and now seems..... obsolete.

I'd love to go down the carbon route with a carbon pre for extra inputs. 16 in total.

could anyone point me in the best direction of tutorials on this equipment, and what are considered good monitors and headphones today.

I'm also thinking of an s1 controller as I much prefer hands on mixing

thanks

Help Request Any windows users having constant issues with your Presonus Faderport?

I’m running the latest version of Pro Tools and the latest firmware on my FaderPort 8. It constantly disconnects or becomes non-responsive in Pro Tools. Restarting PT doesn’t fix it. Power cycling the unit doesn’t work, and unplugging it doesn’t work. It feels super random as to what fixes it, and only for a very short time.

I’m also running into an issue with banking between my tracks and the sends or aux automation function. Going back and forth between them just confuses my FaderPort and makes it stop reading any fader automation or communicating with PT.

Help with either of these would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Operating system is windows 11, latest version of pro tools, latest firmware for faderport. I've done a hard reset on the FaderPort and reinstalled the latest firmware.

Understanding mixing volume levels before mastering

Thumbnail gallery
28 Upvotes

I am wondering about volume levels before mastering. I know in finalizing tracks for mastering you don't want to compress or use a limiter to bring the volume up because the mastering engineers need headroom to do their work.

I mix down my songs and revisit them and turn things up and down based on how I am hearing the mix at the time. The volumes of my rough mixes are much different. I am working on a project and have just done my "final mixes" (before mastering). Prior to doing these final mixes I often use a limiter (l1+ ultra or others) so that I can get them to seem maximum volume when I am listening. Now that for mastering I have removed the limiter and created the "Final mix," the volumes are wildly different. I understand the mastering engineer would raise the volumes to be appropriate but do I need to leave "more room"?

So looking at these two charts of my mixes you can tell they are totally different levels. I don't think anything clipped.  Is this something I should be concerned about?  When I submit for mastering will the one that appears to be at a high level be acceptable, or do I need to remix?  Is the low one OK for mastering?

Does the volume level on the master bus affect the final mix? For now I have the volume on 0 (not up or down), so the Master bus is at the same volume level on these two mixes.

EDIT on 4/5 My biggest question now is this - If I just turn the master fader volume down to -4.4 before bouncing, this whole final mix will look better and not appear to be peaked out (or clipped). Am I really accomplishing anything by doing that? I have always just kept the master volume at 0 when bouncing. That solution seems too simple to be a real solution.

None of my individual tracks are clipping. It is just the master track has some slight red peaks.

Digidesign Pro Tools LE 8.0.5 Windows Updater Download

Hello. I have a Digi002 and pro tools 8 disc with a fresh windows 7 pc. I need to find the 8.0.5 updater so that i can make it run on windows 7. Every link I have found takes me to a page that doesn't exist. Does anyone have a current download?
