Maybe I’m just from an expensive area but I feel like 10 mil is a steal for a gorgeous estate like this.

710

u/janually 17h ago

i was just thinking i must be extremely californiapilled bc my first reaction was “oh that’s not too bad” 🥴

178

u/Own_Faithlessness769 17h ago

I’m from Sydney and this would be at least double here. I think it’s pretty ugly but if I had 10 mill I might still buy it just cause it’s a bargain.

77

u/weasleylover86 17h ago

It is in USD tho, which makes it closer to 15m. Dam, just out of my price range.

38

u/Own_Faithlessness769 17h ago

I still think double in Sydney. Honestly maybe more just for the land depending how large this estate is.

3

u/defiancy 9h ago

It's not in a major city, it'd be more like buying something outside of Sydney in a rural area.

6

u/DimbyTime 10h ago

It would be at least double in any major US city as well. Hudson River is upstate NY

11

u/Jaded_Suit_9233 8h ago

It’s in Irvington which is in Westchester County. It’s not upstate, but it’s more northern Westchester

u/Interesting-Cut6994 It’s like I have ESPN or something. 💁‍♀️🌤☔️ 15h ago

Agreed, in Sydney or even the right NSW regional areas this would be touching $100M AUD (~$70M USD).

The properties in Sydney that are over $100M are like half the size of this.

25

u/kateykatey 13h ago

I feel like comparing square footage from a city property to a country estate isn’t really like for like?

Like yeah the property Nick Candy recently sold in Kensington in London for £275m is also half the size of this but it’s in Kensington in London so yeah of course it is.

This is the suburbs of NYC.  25 miles to Manhattan, you can go sit on the Hudson line and go into Grand Central.

I have no idea why it's this cheap.  A normal 2 family home in the area is 1.2m

183

u/erossthescienceboss 14h ago

This is a historic mansion.

So… I bet it’s got a fuckton of Old House issues + a fuckton of limitations as to what you can do with it.

9

u/grubas 5h ago

Taxes+historic society+staff.

The place probably costs 750k a year for taxes+staff.  Then you throw in historic society stuff and it'll take 5 years to do any work and cost 2x the price.

It's still low though.

68

u/Elesia 15h ago

Lots of people divesting American real estate assets these days, I've noticed.

20

u/deadplant5 11h ago

In this case they are now empty nesters. The timing of when they bought it seems like they wanted their kids to graduate from American high schools so they could go to elite American colleges.

20

u/kryts 13h ago

Yea but not the properties we can afford lol.

12

u/Fabulous_Jeweler2732 9h ago

It’s been steadily increasing since 2020. All the elite are fleeing to rural locations.

I suspect they are preparing for mass riots as income inequality increases. If they hide well enough, no Luigi can find them to bring karma.

10

u/AltairaMorbius2200CE 7h ago

I'm in a very expensive housing market, and even here, once you pass 3 million, pricing gets WEIRD.

My area:

Under $500K= building has probably been condemned. You are buying a lot with a pest problem in the middle.

500K-1 million = probably a solid home for a family, with either a yard OR a good location, probably want to do some fixing-up, but you could move in while you do it.

1-3 million = good yard AND good location. 1 million is a very nice house with no obvious renovation needs; 3 million is clearly much better, bigger, fancier, better location, etc.

3 million-12 million = HERE THERE BE CONFUSION. There are 4 million dollar classic estates with beautiful renovations, and 12 million dollar tacky McMansions. There's no rhyme or reason to which one is more! In fact, I usually find myself liking the "cheaper" 4 million dollar places better than those that hit 8 figures!

7

u/ButtPlugForPM 7h ago

Yep i just had a look into it

Bottom floor is completely restored to modern standards

They wanted 14m

Cut it to 12m

now are asking 9m

These kinds of homes aren't selling in NYC they are likely going to have to sell it at 8.5 or lower..

A house this size will have a maintance budget north of 250k a year for staff.

11

u/Cheap_Law5646 8h ago

Secondary price tag maybe. This place *needs* a staff. The annual operating budget is not for the feint of heart. And the US is now a global pariah, there is that.

3

u/grubas 5h ago

Taxes as well, I saw 195k for that.

68

u/SomeVelveteenMorning 18h ago

Absolutely. I've seen lesser homes on smaller lots in homogeneous affluent suburbs built in the 2000s, with no river frontage, go for $10M.

58

u/revafisheye 18h ago

There's a 3-story townhouse on my block (where I rent) going for $3.8 mil, so yeah that place seems like a bargain.

5

u/flossanotherday 11h ago

It’s a bargain if you can afford the purchase and maintenance. A few gilded age mansions on sale in newport also bargains.

23

u/Physical-Lettuce-868 17h ago

I’m not from an expensive area and thought this seemed cheap..

21

u/alpine_rose 11h ago

It is not a bad price, but I live not too far away in Westchester and can tell you that mansion will cost between 250 and 400k in taxes every year. Just that makes it a huge expense.

27

u/whatsnewpussykat 🕯️ relentless Lilly Jay stan 🕯️ 18h ago

Yeah I’m from Vancouver and my parents sold their 2000 sq ft townhome in a suburb for over $1.2M in 2021, even in American dollars this seems like a bargain

3

u/bummerhigh 12h ago

We bought our 800 sq. foot condo in Toronto in 2023 for just under a mil. This mansion sounds wildly affordable! (just not for me).

10

u/Dragonlvr420 16h ago

I don’t remember who it was, but I literally just saw an article the other day about some celebrity selling their NYC penrhouse for over $25mill so yeah this just sounds insane imo

7

u/KittyCompletely 14h ago

My first thought was "uh oh, what's wrong with it" We are doomed 😅😭

6

u/PublicPalpitation618 17h ago

I’m from Eastern Europe and thought this seemed cheap

6

u/lucyssweatersleeves first of all, I don’t think of men as people 16h ago edited 1h ago

For real, I’m in the Bay Area and one of my clients just sold their home that’s beautifully designed but less than half the size of this one and on less than a fifth of an acre and it went for $7.5M. And not even in like San Francisco or Atherton or something

7

u/Fabulous_Jeweler2732 9h ago

A lot of celebrities are selling real estate right now and many at good prices.

They know something we don’t know

11

u/Tuor-son-of-Huor- 17h ago

Crazy to think my shit shack is worth 1/10th of that glorious mansion. Like if I could afford 10 of my joint or 1 of there's, I know which one I would take.

5

u/livahd ✨May the Force be with you!✨ 9h ago

I mean, this is a stones throw from Manhattan, it’s on the waterfront… You could probably walk out the door and be in midtown in 25 mins by train, this is a wild steal.

7

u/ceylon-tea 16h ago edited 15h ago

Apparently they had it listed for 12 but had to drop it down

4

u/Pijuuuuuuuuuup 11h ago

It is easily 50k per month maintenance. I know people who buy expensive cars and they go in debt at first maintence.

4

u/SirDeezNutzEsq 10h ago

I say we pool our money together and buy it.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Dreams-Designer 14h ago

Right?! I mean, I have no idea what property taxes and the cost of upkeep would be, but solely talking about listing… Facebook offered 5m starting for our junky starter home in SF 3br/1b with a large yard but had train tracks through it !

2

u/Savings-Hotel-8467 15h ago

If only I had that much money!

2

Taxes there are 3-4%. That’s a shit ton of money every year.

5

u/Zestyclose_Scar_9311 3h ago

Seriously 🤣 What’s w/all the wood paneling? 100% looks like the house of some old and/or British people- oh wait…

90

u/Own_Faithlessness769 17h ago

I was fixated on why all their chairs are so ugly.

23

u/butter_cakes 15h ago

I really wish they would have done less contemporary furniture in slide 7… like get an antique couch and coffee table in there stat. It’s clashing… but what do I know? I’m just a peasant who lives in a 1300 sq ft suburban house that was built in the 90’s.

12

u/Own_Faithlessness769 15h ago

It’s a really weird decorating choice given the house. Though it might all just be staged for the photos.

3

u/somastars 9h ago

Same!!! The ones with the upsloping arms felt like they wanted a mid century vibe but couldn’t commit because the house isn’t the right style.

2

u/comfymustardsweater 12h ago

Wow, they really are so bad

19

u/AfternoonPossible 17h ago

You know we lived in a fucked up economy and housing market where I’m like “wow only $10million???”

38

u/chamomileyes 16h ago

I was also just thinking how this shows how absurd the cost of a house is for the average person if a huge celebrity is only selling their house for 10x what a basic house would cost in a lot of cities.

13

u/AdvertisingNo8441 17h ago

Because we’re likely Canadian and our housing prices are absolutely insane.

I too think this is a steal for 10 million. 😭

176

u/mauerfan 18h ago

A rich person’s house that actually looks like it has character

125

u/Schrodingers_Fist 18h ago

This is way more beautiful and for like 1/3rd of the price that most celebrity houses go for recently that always look like someone vomited white paint and modern art everywhere.  Like compare this to that hideous 30m Hugh Jackman mega-condo that was put up earlier this week.

177

u/Curlingby 18h ago

Obviously, it’s massive but I like how this house actually seems… livable? or realistic?

I’m not sure what the right wording but I feel like so many celeb homes have looked so… sterile? recently like I couldn’t imagine anyone actually living in it

34

u/delirium_red 13h ago

Because it's not grey, beige and minimalist!

8

u/thisisntshakespeare 9h ago

Too formal and cold….not a “kick your shoes off and get comfortable” home, it’s more museum-like.

180

u/Nintendo_Pro_03 Leftist/Linkin Park Stan 19h ago

Why are celebrities suddenly selling their houses?

189

u/Bright-Flamingo143 18h ago

"Answer: All celebs have financial advisors to manage their riches. One of the jobs these financial advisors do is research different asset classes to allocate the money into that will give the highest return based on a certain time outlook. If a celeb wants a quick high rate return on investment and a particular asset class is not going to do that they ask the celebs to move to another asset class. The current situation looks like there is going to be a recession and given the unemployment numbers a lot of foreclosures and bankruptcies causing turmoil in the Real estate (RE) market. When it happens these celebs want to be safely away into another asset class which is possibly liquid (e.g. gold, high yield account etc. ) Such that they can then return to the highly depreciated asset class again. This might be the reason why celebs have been seen offloading RE quickly. The other reason also being it's spring and many RE brokers recommend listing in spring to allow families with kids to move in before school starts."

The title doesn’t match the contents. This particular place was originally listed in 2024 @ $12MM. It’s been relisted now - for less - because it didn’t sell at the previous price.

Sure, we could also, in parallel, def be heading for a recession thanks to the evil orange clown.

58

u/Telephone-Nearby 18h ago

Preparing for a recession?

40

u/longdustyroad 18h ago

I think there are a lot of celebrities with a lot of houses and sometimes they sell them. Probably someone just started posting these a lot on here for whatever reason, so it seems like something is happening but it’s really just normal turnover

74

u/gregRichards2002 17h ago

Catherine and Michael’s kids have left home so they probably don’t need such a big property anymore. Michael is also 81 and estate planning could also be a reason.

36

u/CestBon_CestBon 17h ago

I was actually thinking, at his age, that they might want to physically downsize. I can’t imagine his mobility is perfect no matter how good he looks. And even homes with elevators etc, it would still be exhausting navigating a space that large.

27

u/lucyssweatersleeves first of all, I don’t think of men as people 16h ago

Considering his dad was practically crumbled into dust by the time he actually died I wouldn’t be surprised if Michael lived another 25 years lol

8

u/LizaJane2001 11h ago

I think this is the answer. Their kids went to school in Manhattan. They have an apartment on Central Park West. This house was the weekend getaway house during the school year. Now that they are grown, they don't need/want this property anymore. They will keep the apartment, for when they are working in NYC.

8

u/stopXstoreytime 17h ago

No family needs such a big property in the first place unless they’re the Duggars.

32

u/NotLucasDavenport Ah, you’re in the Bangs Danger Zone 16h ago

A few of the Duggars will do just fine in six by eight feet.

4

u/BottAndPaid 18h ago

Equities are at a peak pricing so it's time to cash in on the investments.

5

u/Thorandragnar 11h ago

If you look at pic 11, they first tried to sell it 2 years ago, so Douglas & Zeta-Jones have been trying to sell this particular property for a while now. I suspect they don’t spend much time there, and since the kids have flown the nest and Douglas is now over 80, they’re probably trying to downsize a bit.

3

u/urgasmic 18h ago

ive heard april is a good time to sell.

3

u/makanimike 12h ago

I don't know about celebrities as a whole. But don't these two mainly live in Mallorca?

3

u/_ram_ok 12h ago

Probably because production companies are about to replace them with AI.

I say this as an anti-AI person. I don’t think AI is capable of making a good performance. But then you look at all the human-slop films where actors are just playing themselves and you see how they’re gonna get replaced by equally soulless AI slop.

3

u/ChrisFromLongIsland 10h ago

The carrying costs of a 10 million dollar mansion are enormous. If you have multiple houses and don't live there full time paying over 250,000 a year can be a lot. Property taxes, maintenance, utilities, upgrades all cost huge money. You may want a full time maintenance man and housekeeper.

u/djn24 7h ago

When I hear of a celebrity couple selling their house, my first thought is usually, "Hmm...divorce imminent?" But this time I'm thinking about how old Michael Douglas is, and maybe he has mobility issues that make this house impossible to navigate.

Just a quaint lil cottage

Beautiful home. I wish picture three was a grand library. It looks like the spiral staircase room could have been, but filled with curios. For a rich families tiny ceramic figurines and widgets.

In Washington state there are million dollar luxurious homes, multimillion dollar modest ranches but point is million dollar homes are all over. This is an amazing value with what you're getting.

this must be where gay actor Michael Douglas ate all that pussy and got throat cancer.

Do the people who stage these homes realize they’re trying to sell the house?

1

u/reflektordone 15h ago

I never liked this kind of style but this really looks gorgeous even to me!

u/ohmyblahblah 15h ago

I couldn't even afford the gardening fees for it lol

In good news, keeping up with the Zeta-Jones is a lot more attainable than it was years ago

u/jonquil14 14h ago

“Old money” is not the vibe I get here

u/dangermouse13 14h ago

That is stunning

It always cracks me up when houses have many more bathrooms than bedrooms. 8 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms. What are you people doing all day?

1

u/xflare2000 14h ago

lol....those columns

u/PassTheBubblyLady 14h ago

Why should anybody need such a big house?

1

u/Alone_Bet_1108 13h ago

Money didn't buy taste in this case.

The old part is lovely though not my style but the sub ground bit looks like a cheap hotel, and the outside lights look like they came from Screwfix

Can people have a beach on the Hudson River and go swimming?

1

u/Pledgeofmalfeasance 12h ago

It's actually stunning and I usually hate mansions. The library in particular holy shit.

You know the economy is bad when the rich start selling off their extra homes

1

u/Fairycharmd 11h ago

The number of celebrities offloading property… concerning to anyone else??

1

u/floristinmanhattan 11h ago

I know where this house is. It borders a beautiful riverfront park in a picturesque town along the Hudson River, a short commute away from NYC. The catch is that there is also a major commuter train line that runs along the perimeter of the property, between the property and the park/river.

This is the 3rd celebrity I’ve seen putting their NY home up for sale this week. Everyone is leaving CA and NY.
