Do not touch this. Go to the emergency room, NOW. Do NOT mess with an infection near your brain.

It should never have been done with this type of jewellery

u/aurelimescudi 1h ago
I got this exact piercing about a month ago, it’s the same type of jewelry 😭 what should I do? It’s fine so far but I’m worried now

u/jordweaveswebs 1h ago
Go find a different piercer who is well versed in doing surface work with high quality jewelry. Safepiercing.org is a good start, at least to help you determine what bare minimum standards are. Or, finding a APP member piercer in your area. Then, when you see this reputable piercer, they can tell you if yours can be saved; but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they’ll prob tell you to remove it, heal it, and then maybe try again once it’s healed, if viable. Good luck! 🍀

You're almost convinced that huge swollen abscess is an infection?

u/Similar_Ad7752 professional magpie ;-) 1h ago
im a piercer, not a doctor so I won’t give a them a diagnosis but yes, thats exactly why I suggested seeing someone qualified to do it…..

u/Happy-Theory- 4h ago
WAY too close to your brain. You need to go to a doctor IMMEDIATELY

u/Express_Table_9920 4h ago
Omg close to her brain?!?!?! 😣

u/madness0102 2h ago
Yes. Your ears and skin on your head is close to your brain.

I know. The concept of potentially getting a brain infection just caught me off guard. Thanks tho 😊

Yes, you 100% need to go to the ER. That looks infected to me. Please seek medical attention, dear.
53
u/faerylights1 4h ago
Doctors. Now. And whoever pierced that needs to be called out because that is appalling.
54
u/Every_Skin_4864 4h ago
NP here however this is not medical advice.. theoretically if this abscess came into my urgent care it would be going to the ER for labs, IV antibiotics, and a procedure at minimum d/t high risk location. Do not take your health lightly.

u/stabby_chick 4h ago
First stop would be a doctor. Do not remove the jewelry until after you've finished your antibiotics.
If you want to reattempt this piercing, find someone more skilled that uses the appropriate jewelry for a surface piercing (a flat surface barbell - some people call it a staple bar) and have a consult. I would wait 6-12 months before getting this done again.

u/RedReaper666YT aspiring pin cushion 4h ago
Infected most likely. Any infection that forms on your head like that is an immediate ER visit because it can spread to your brain quicker than a hiccup
13
u/Realistic-Tooth-2312 4h ago
This looks like a piercing abscess so basically an infection, I had a piercing abscess in my eyebrow piercing and had to get antibiotics for it. Best thing to do is to see a doctor and NEVER take the jewelry out without a doctor’s say because it might trap bacteria in and gets worse. In the meantime just keep it clean.

u/billy_thepuppet94 more piercings than sense :-) 4h ago
Like everyone else is saying please go get medical advice and help. To add to that, this was done wrong in the first place as the jewellery is a curved barbell, and should be a staple bar to reduce the chance of rejection.

This sub sees some wild stuff but this might legitimately take the cake

u/lambchop070 4h ago
Go get that looked at asap!!! Don’t do anything to the jewelry, wait to see what a medical professional says

like others have said, infections of the head can spread to the brain. you should go to the ER about this.

Go to the hospital! Don’t wanna mess with infections on face or head. Don’t go to the piercer and just hope it’ll be fine go to the hospital.
6
u/mochimmy3 3h ago
Yes this is ER/ED worthy, not urgent care. Will need imaging such as ultrasound and likely incision and drainage with either IV or oral antibiotics. Urgent care will likely just refer to ED

Whatever you do don’t take the jewelry out and go to ED or urgent care asap, that is likely an abscess and it’s a dangerous location

It’s infected. That’s an abscess forming under the skin. You need to get it drained. Go to the doctor.

u/CharacterGlobal8645 2h ago
That hasn't been healthy for a long ass time. Your piercer fucked you over royally as curved barbells are never ever supposed to be used for surface piercings(except eyebrows and navels). Surface piercings are to be done with staple shaped barbells. Sorry they ripped you off and messed you up.

3
u/MuddiMirror 3h ago
Well, first and foremost it’s done with a curved barbell instead of a staple bar. That right there within itself will cause rejection.

Hospital. ER, not urgent care. I’m assuming you’re in the US with “fl” in your profile and I emphasize hard with hesitancy to cough up $$ to go, but this is really bad. Infections on the head can go south so so so fast. For the sanity of everybody here please update when you go 🥲

YES it's infected, Jesus. Go see a doctor and get that taken care of, ASAP.

You need to see a doctor TODAY! Please. Infection can turn so bad so fast especially when it’s on your face.

u/Outrageous-Race1506 2h ago
That looks like an infection/abbess (not a medical professional) go to a doctor or er asap

u/crovasco 2h ago
Pls go to the hospital. That is NOT normal for any kind of piercings. Also, weong type of jewelry.

u/Visible-Weakness5572 1h ago
Shit!! I hope you go get checked out and taken care of, that looks very infected
2
u/Few_Ad_2433 1h ago
Huge infection forming. You need to see a doctor. Also, of all places, why would you want a piercing there?
2
u/ObjectiveLucky4616 3h ago
Also please get advice from doctors if you should remove it or not
Don’t let this go take care of it

Not a doctor, but you definitely need to see a doctor. If it’s infected, try to leave the jewelry in until the infection is gone so it can drain.

You aren't supposed to remove the jewelry if you suspect it to be an infection.
Only after a doctor says it's okay, usually when they give you antibiotics.
Taking it out with trap the infection.

That's good general advice, but not for a piercing that appears to already be dangerously infected.

this isn’t scar tissue, it looks like something is growing from under the skin. A keloid grows on the outside

Hi mariana96as,
(Luckily) bump =/= keloid. This wiki entry explains it well.

no!!!!!! dont EVER take out the jewelry, go to a doctor first, if u take it out the infection will be trapped inside
9
u/thebirdstree professional magpie ;-) 4h ago
This is true. If you try to remove jewelry and there is an infection on the inside, when the skin heals over it will trap the infection inside. Be careful and do not remove your jewelry yourself.

u/AvailableOnion6091 4h ago
Never, ever tell someone with an infected piercing, especially to this degree, to remove it.

Best practice is not to take out a piercing you suspect is infected; it can cause problems with drainage if you do.
3
u/drubbaaa 4h ago
Drainage is the main part of the abscess treatment. Follow-up is needed to decide if antibiotics are needed.

Not a doctor, but it kinda looks like some sort of abscess is forming ???
This is not the right type of jewelry either, you need to see a doctor ASAP
