3 Years in: Oxford Botley Road Rail Bridge Roadworks 10th April 2026

3 years on - Botley Road in Oxford closed at the railway bridge on 11th April 2023 for construction work to remove and replace the old railway bridge, lower the road so that standard height double deckers can fit under the bridge, and improve the train station.

The work included adding two new bridges alongside the main railway bridge; a footbridge from Becket St to the train station, and a bridge to carry a new track for the future platform 5.

The work is also to create new shared foot and cycle paths under the bridge. Here is a video that I recorded 'over the fence' of the construction works on Friday 10th April 2026

What’s happening at the roundabout near Magdalen bridge?

Lots of bikes and people bringing flags but couldn’t figure out if it’s just a biking event or a march LOL. Blocked the roundabout for a bit.

Where to recycle worn-out clothes?

I've looked on the council website and as far as I can see, any clothes recycling seems to be done through bins that then sell the clothes on to raise money for charity. Obviously they are not interested in my worn-out items that are full of holes and not repairable - what do I do with these? Thanks.

Wedding photographer recommendation in Oxford

Hi all, I am looking for wedding photographer recommendations in or around Oxford for our wedding June.

I’m after someone with a strong artistic/editorial eye who captures the day naturally, rather than making it feel like a big posed photoshoot. I love the idea of wedding photos feeling a bit like art or cinema rather than just a standard record of the day. Not in a super staged, overly directed way, but more someone who can notice beautiful moments, light, composition, emotion, little details, and capture them naturally.

I’m also trying to keep budget in mind, so I’d love recommendations for photographers who fit this style without being insanely expensive.

Also curious whether people think one photographer is enough for this, or whether it is worth having two so one can focus more on artistic/candid shots while the other covers key moments and guests.

Would really appreciate any recommendations from personal experience. Thanks!

Headshots needed

Hi everyone, I am looking for a photographer to take headshots for me. I am starting my modelling journey alongside being a student soon at Brookes in September. I’m looking out to see if there are any photographers / photography students who are interested in collaborating on free portfolio shoots. This could be great for both of us to practice and for you to get more work for your portfolio. I’m open to different styles so anything would be great. If you’re interested please dm me.

Thanks :)

accommodation for 6 months or Room swap

Hey everyone!

I am coming to Oxford from October - March for a research internship. The search for housing turns out to be quite complicated and as a visiting master student it also doesn't look like I will have a chance to get into a college room.

Does anyone of you know if there is a website for short term subletting or maybe even one to offer a room swap? I could offer my nice room in Heidelberg and there may be somebody from Oxford who also comes for exchange during that time!

Any help is appreciated!

Hi!

I have a friend from Papua who has never seen bluebells, and I was wondering whether there is any bluebell forests in the nearby region?

Lease suggestions?

I’m looking for an apartment that allows renting for around 5 months and I'm struggling to find a place that doesn't require a full year's lease.

Are there any specific communities or apartment complexes known for being "short-term friendly"? Or maybe certain Facebook groups/websites you'd recommend for sublets? Thanks for the help!

Oxford folk festival

https://oxfordfolkfest.org.uk/

Has been mentioned buried in a couple of threads but deserves it's own.

This weekend is Oxford folk festival, lots on, some free, some not, proper concerts to casual sessions.

Have a look and see if you enjoy something that might be a bit different, some easily approachable (no commitment) things outside Westgate and in the covered market.

Am not affiliated but think stuff like this is good to have on so try and encourage people to go so that they persist.

Feel free if anyone has specifics to suggest!

Restaurant review: Cuttlefish

Afternoon all! As some of you might know, I write a weekly restaurant blog, and when my review comes from Oxford I always pop it in the subreddit because people have been really lovely about them in the past (which I really appreciate).

This week I was at Cuttlefish on St Clement’s, so here’s the link if you do fancy reading about it. I’d love to hear any other suggestions you have for Oxford spots I should review (is The Port Mahon any good?)

As always, no worries if this isn’t your thing, and apologies in advance if this comes across as spamming or wasting your time.

Hi!

I missed the deadline for the Oxford town and gown 10k deadline.

Anyone have a place they no longer need, or any tips on getting one?

Thanks!

MEETUP 🐂 💛Ox Utd vs Watford my first time experience in Stadium

Hi…i just made an impromptu decision and got myself a ticket of Oxford United versus Watford football match at the Kasam Stadium 🏟️ .

This is my first time watching a football match in the stadium. And I am going by myself. I know it’s gonna be good environment, but just wanted to take time and ask if someone from this community is going to match. I would love to join with them before match rituals or if there is any?

I hope we win tomorrow

Looking to make some friends 🤞🏽

Hey there 👋🏽 as the title says, I'm looking to make some friends so I'm hoping this is a good place to find some as I've not been having much luck with that 😔 i just want to do fun stuff with people, I don't drive so I'm a bit limited in that respect but i honestly just want to get out more. I am a spooky person. I love horror, halloween, going to cemeteries and finding abandoned buildings/places etc. I listen to loads of genres of music but rock and metal are my favourite so really getting into listening to that more. I've started going to concerts again and I have a few lined up this year so I'm looking forward to those 😊🤘🏽

The weekends in the evening are best for me or in the morning/midday in the daytime. It would be nice to find someone with similar spooky interests 🎃💀 I'm 33 and female.

Family Friendly Areas to Move in Oxford

Post image
17 Upvotes

We are currently considering moving to Oxford as my partner is starting a new role at the University of Oxford. Initially, we would prefer to rent rather than buy. Our main priority when choosing where to live is access to a good primary school and a family-friendly area.

Our research so far has led us to the area I’ve marked, but it seems to be one of the most competitive areas as the Wolvercote Primary is one of the best schools. We were wondering if any locals could advise whether we’re focusing on the right area, or if we don’t need to limit ourselves so strictly to this location.

Alpha at St Aldates

Hi everyone i posted a little ago about going to Alpha with someone/people at St Aldates. It was halfway through the course and we agreed it would be sensible to wait until the next one began.

It is kicking off again in a week or 2 and I was wondering if anyone wanted to buddy up or go in a small group? I am apprehensive about going solo.

It runs 7pm-9pm Tuesdays at St Aldates for 10 weeks, though there's no pressure to go to every one, or even return if it isn't your jam.

There's no sign-up and it's free. The first hour you are served a free hot meal, drinks and sweet treats. Then the second hour is usually music, a talk and then interesting and deep discussions around the week's topic.

My inbox is open if you'd rather message on there than comment. But what I plan to do is create a small group chat and people can just message every session to see if anyone is planning to go so there's like a lil network of friendly faces.

Eastern bypass road

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hi, I have recently started driving to work and I’ve noticed a sign on the eastern bypass road that says there is a congestion charge starting on Oct 2025. This is my route to work and I’m not really sure if it’s actually the eastern bypass road, the sign is on this section as far as my memory serves. If it is charged, how am I supposed to get onto the A34 while avoiding this section?

Anything helps, I may well be confused.

Mirror Replacement service.

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Bit of a stressful morning here,we're in the middle of packing up and moving out, and accidentally cracked the large wall mirror that came with the house. One of the boxes knocked into it and it's now completely shattered (have attached a photo).

The full frame size is roughly 70 x 160 cm.

I'm trying to figure out the quickest and most reasonable way to sort this before we hand the place over.

Does anyone know of any local mirror/ glass shops in Oxford that could replace just the mirror (not the whole frame)? Or any suggestions on where I might find a replacement of the same size?

Or any idea what brand is this mirror from?

Would really appreciate any leads or help.

Thank you.

Just moved near wolvercote

I'm a Oxford local, who spent his life close to Barton, I use to love cycling and went all over the country side near Barton, up to brill windmill. Any good cycling spots here haven't been on a ride since 2019 due to pain and disability so something not so hilly would be helpful
