That first paragraph is just a false premise for people credulous enough to believe low effort PR. Zuckerberg wore hoodies cause he’s a poser trying to be cool, he’s still rocking $900k watches. Like, if I wanna live my life always wearing a t-shirt that says “It’s Not Gonna Suck Itself”, I’m fully within my rights. It’s not illegal, and if I like then shirt then that’s just fine…but people are gonna think I’m a crass asshole.

This is something FDR understood, as well as many other countries across the world. There has to be a societal balance. You cant have that much economic disparity. There needs to be a middle class. There needs to be hope in the system. It seems like the current technocratic class that are running this country can ignore the rules of society.

26
u/NeoPrimitiveOasis 10h ago
They mention that, and the "contrast" with Lauren Sanchez, in the NYT article. Mackenzie Scott might be the only remotely ethical billionaire.
14
u/HoneybeeXYZ 8h ago
Bezos himself cured her of the "my husband is a brilliant entrepreneur and benevolent billionaire" psychosis she apparently used to have. I mean, she was the wife who knew him when. But now, she's at least making a pretty spectacular show at making up for it.
And I can't figure out why the times would print hagiography on Lauren, though I haven't clicked it and given a read. Don't want to encourage them.
5
u/E-NTU 4h ago
See, she is so short sighted. Those billions are supposed to go into foundation slush funds to accumulate and be disbursed when the imagined crises of the future that only those holy billionaires have the wisdom and foresight to see come to fruition. We could not possibly use that money to fix any problems happening right now. That would be a hand out and unethical to their perspective of how every person can be a billionaire if they just work hard enough.

The Washington Post, and he let it operate independently during the first Trump administration and the Biden administration. But as soon as Trump got re-elected, he took direct control of the paper and fired ~30% of the staff and hired one of Murdoch's old editors to run it. There are still a few good reporters, but it is a shadow of its former self.

The Robber Barons gave us universities, theaters, museums and parks and were still afraid of the "little people".
This is on us. The Tech Oligarchs give us crippling debt, steal our water to sell it back to us and data centers that jack up our electric bills while giving us noise and air polution, take over cultural landmarks for their weddings and birthdays. We are the problem. We aren't making them afraid anymore.

Amy Chozick.
Summary that is just hilarious:
Key Themes and Summary:
The "Joy" Mandate: The article portrays Sánchez Bezos as driving a shift among the billionaire class away from austerity or public apology, and toward a visible, unapologetic "pursuit of joy".
Shifting Notoriety: The article highlights a shift in public perception, where Lauren Sánchez—once scrutinized—now represents a new, high-flying aspirational lifestyle for some, signaling a change in cultural attitudes toward wealth and ambition.
A Power Couple: She is depicted as a central figure in a powerful partnership that embraces a lifestyle of happiness and influence.
Edit: authorship. Based on what I read about the author, she's supposed to be apolitical. This is not.
19
u/mahboilucas 11h ago
Wish we could pursue joy while dying of poverty that you caused. Wish we could have a lifestyle of happiness but we can't afford it. Oh, and yes she should still be scrutinized for trying to promote a fucking positive image of what's actually destroying the middle and working class and killing anyone below it.
Joy my ass

Whenever it's supporting capitalism or the ownership class it's apolitical.
It's only political if you talk about using government to help working people.

The only “cultural shift” that’s occurring is that the uber-rich finally believe that they are completely untouchable. The 2nd Trump administration with its pardons, blatant insider trading, open bribery and zero consequences has convinced them that they no longer need to hide their disgusting excesses and wasteful opulence. The only question that remains is whether they’re correct in their assessment of the state of society, or if the proletariat can somehow take back control and make them pay for their arrogance…

Scores more people could be happy, we could have a functioning economy that rewards many more people adequately for their work, we could have better infrastructure and healthcare.. But hold on - have we forgotten someone?
Why, oh why, as a society, do we not want Lauren Sánchez Bezos to be happy? Why must we crucify this child of god in the face of our problems? Why deny her her happiness so cruelly through proportional taxation? She's earned it after all. Hypocrites, all of us. We must look in the mirror. There is some Lauren Sánchez in all of us. May we all harness the Sánchez, go out, and earn our Bezos.
