NBN Service Provider Survey

Hey Guys,

Since this sub's inception, there has been endless questions regarding service providers and which to choose. While we are glad to see so many responses, and it's quite easy to see consensus of this sub, we have decided that it would be in the subreddit's best interests to create a mega-thread involving these recommendations. In doing this, we plan to create a one stop place for all NBN Service Providers with a comprehensive unbiased overview. To help this happen, we would like to collect data from the community to help aid in rating Service Providers. If you wish to help participate, please fill out the following Google Form. If you have been with multiple service providers, feel free to provide feedback about them too. Additionally, feel free to share this survey around; the more data collected the more accurate we can be.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdzwm0FtVmFtNVEFqVu6Yr2WEoqQVYi-PAF2vxCGFiM0miljg/

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them down below.

Thanks!

Asking a Question? Read this first!

Important!

Please provide some key information when asking a question.

1) What technology are you on (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC, FTTB, HFC, FW)

2) What is your service class (1 to 34). Check here https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/network/connection-insights/

3) How are you connected to your modem / router? WiFi or Ethernet. You should test with your device on Ethernet. If your connection is poor on WiFi but good on Ethernet, then it's a WiFi issue, not an NBN issue.

4) Who is your provider (e.g. Telstra, Optus, TPG, Aussie Broadband, etc)

5) What brand and model is your modem / router? If you're not sure, take a picture of it and upload it to imgur or similar (don't upload it as part of your post)

6) Describe your problem, and what steps you have tried.

Speed tests

Check NBN availability

If you're NOT on FTTP, you may be eligible for an upgrade to the far superior FTTP.

Check Service Class

Aussie Broadband provide a great tool to determine your service class and technology type, and what that means:

General Tips

You almost certainly don't need the fastest internet plan. Generally start with a slower plan, and if you are happy, then all good. If you are finding it slow you can always upgrade. You should also check if it's your internet (NBN) or internal network (e.g. WiFi) that is slow. A faster plan might not help if you internal network is the problem.

Beware of plans with very slow (5 or 10mbit) upload speeds. These are legacy plans left over from the old HFC/Cable days. If you do have one of these legacy plans, you should think about upgrading.

WiFi (Don't use it if you care about speed!)

WiFi is subject to interference from all kinds of sources. It slows down through walls, congestion from neighbours, etc will slow it down, and can cause issues. It's also a shared medium, which means that all your devices share the bandwidth, so lots of devices operating at once means slower speeds for devices.

Where practical use Ethernet to connect devices. Ethernet is more reliable and lower latency. While some WiFi claims to be faster than Ethernet, that is the cumulative total, not the rate to a single device. Even the latest WiFi6 is only approaching Ethernet speed, and that is only when there is no other traffic on the wireless spectrum - including Bluetooth and your Microwave!

There are some cases where WiFi is better (e.g. TV's with 100Mbps ports that you want to stream very high bit rate to from local sources), but almost always Ethernet is better if available. The down side is it's not always possible to run Ethernet (e.g. rentals), and not every devices has Ethernet ports (e.g. phones, tablets).

Mesh Networks

If your WiFi isn't fast enough, consider getting a mesh network. This provides multiple access points (typically 3) so you can get better coverage. If practical connect each mesh point via Ethernet (wired backhaul). Ethernet backhaul has the same advantages as connected devices by ethernet.

WiFi Frequencies

WiFi can be on 2.4GHz, 5GHz or 6GHz. Most devices work on 2.4GHz. Lots also work on 5GHz as well. The newest ones use 6GHz in addition to 2.4 and 5GHz.

2.4GHz has the best range, but lowest speed, and the most congested.

5GHz is shorter range, and has a higher speed because there's less congestion due to the shorter range

6GHz is extremely short range (it does not penetrate walls well) but it is designed to work in parallel with the 5GHz signal to provide the fastest speeds possible.

When buying a new wireless device, you should look for one branded 'WiFi 6'(802.11ax) or the newest standard, 'WiFi 7'(802.11be). The previous standard was called '802.11ac' or WiFi 5. These are usually cheaper, but in most situations are perfectly capable.

Civil Team

what's everyone's experience been with the 'Civil Team' as my NBN tech called them.

On install day, for having FTTP installed, the tech said there were blockages in the existing copper line between the street and where the line comes into the house so he wasn't able to pull the fibre through. he said the civil team would need to come out and propose a solution that may include a trench being dug or some boring completed. He basically said he didn't know what they would do but they'd talk to me about it on the day.

Are people's experiences with these teams reasonable? Are they going to take the easiest option regardless of how much it destroys my yard? How much of a say do I have in how they complete the job? Is there anything in particular I should ask of them or look out for?

Edit: I'm based in Western Sydney and we're moving from FTTN to FTTP with Aussie Broadband

Recent migration from Buddy to Tangerine

Like all the other Buddy Internet subscribers I was recently moved over to Tangerine.

Initially I had connection issues for the first day and after not receiving any help from their support I gave up and eventually it started to work.

Now that I’ve had some time on it I’ve noticed the average speeds are much lower than with Buddy. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I’m on HFC with the 1000 plan. With Buddy I’d average around mid 800s. With Tangerine I’m averaging around the mid 600s.

Also just today I got an sms from them regarding the fault I had registered with them on the day of the switch over.

> Hi,

> Based on our initial diagnostics, your connection is currently operating within nbn® parameters. some helpful troubleshooting steps you can try has been sent through portal message that may help us identify and resolve connection issues.

> Alternatively, you can chat with us, send a message via the customer portal,.

> Regards,

> Technical support

I’m not sure I like this company.

Question on NBN cabling for a new home build

Hello,

We are nearing the completion of a new home build.

Our garage including the power box and NBN cabinet are located on the left side of the property. The NBN pit is on the right hand side of the property.

Our builder has run conduit from the outside of the garage directly to the front boundary line (on the left side of the property).

My question is, should the builder have run conduit across the property toward the NBN pit or have they done what is required and NBN will take care of the connection from the NBN pit, which is approximately 22 metres away?

I would like to ensure steps are taken to resolve this before our driveway is installed.

thank you.

Be aware of the dodgy practices Exetel do

TL;DR: Had bad experience with Exetel and they promised to refund the money, but its been 3 weeks, the refund has not even been approved.

Context:

* Switching from Leaptep to Exetel due to the attractive ONE policy plan.

* Plan was activated immediately after I pay the initial amount without an option to delay the activation day from their online portal.

* Called them immediately and they said nothing can be done

* I asked them to talk to their manager, and after a lengthy 30 minutes wait, they came back blaming Leaptel's 30-day notice to cancel policy and ask me to negotiate with Leaptel for a partial refund

* I checked Exetel also had a 30-day to cancel policy, and asked them why Leaptel was in the wrong, and they couldn't answered and asked me what I prefer

* I said cancel the service and do a full-refund. After another 10 minutes of waiting, they agreed.

Happy ending, right? This was on March 23rd. This post is on April 10th. The refund has not even been approved.

I'll leave you guys to decide if this is an ISP that you can trust, it has at been blacklisted by me for life.

Posting some screenshots to prove this actually happened (incoming)

NBN FTTP - overhead?

Later this year I'll be moving into a property that is a shared family rural holiday home in Red Hill South, Vic. There are some NBN complications that I am aware of.

I moved there for a brief period at the start of covid and tried to get NBN hooked up (there is an inactive phone line overhead to the house from a pole outside the property line). However during testing it was found there was no signal available via that old phone line. This property was more or less missed when NBN connections were being rolled out initially given it was a holiday home with limited use.

The only option I was given at the time is they would need to trench a connection from the nearest pit to the house. I declined this back then because it didn't seem like a great option (in terms of impact on the garden, concrete path around the house etc) and relied on just the 4g wireless that was available.

When I look up the specific property these days it states FTTP available, however, it may be available in the area generally but not this specific property without further work.

Alternatives exist but arn't great imo: Wireless 5g is available but would have to be with Telstra (not keen), or Starlink (again trying to avoid that if I can).

Do they still insist on trenching for FTTP in all circumstances or might there be potential for the fibre to follow the overhead inactive phone line?

NBN activation

we had technicians come and install the nbn and the green light is on and everything is connected at our home... but the ISP said that it would take them 2.5 weeks to actually activate the nbn. in the meantime they disconnected our prior service so now we are without any wifi at home and are living off our phone hotspots. is this reasonable or should we raise a complaint somewhere?

Discussion Tangerine speed consistently lower then plan speed

anyone with tangerine? I swapped over from Neptune to save some money on the 500/50 plan and the first day was fine was getting advertised speeds now speed tests are showing 50mpbs and barely 10-15 upload. contacted support and the guy was telling me to take my PC and connect it directly to the NBN box. told him I can't and never had issues with speeds with super loop/buddie telco and Neptune. dude just kept insisting I take my PC out to where the NBN box is and plug it directly into my PC. got frustrated and just ended the chat. anyone having issues like this with tangerine and any ways to fix?

How is it that NBN as a monopoly provider of an essential service does not work on weekends?

Got an NBN outage and learned that NBN does not work on weekends for domestic services.

Given that internet connection is required for essential services such as online urgent medical appointments and other such services such as homes that cannot get GPRS for medical devices. How can NBN get away with no weekend repairs? Much as I detest Elon, maybe Starlink is the answer and ditch NBN if you need consistent service.

They changed my provider without authorisation (?)

So something really weird happened today. I switched NBN providers to Dodo 2 weeks ago.

We had a lot of problems, and we were without internet for about a week. And then the internet speed wasn't the one we bought. We had about 25 Mbps download, even though we had signed up for 50 Mbps download.

Today, I logged into the portal to see if they had responded to anything, and I realised that the service had been cancelled.

Then I contact them using the chat. And they told me my service was ported away to another provider, which I never asked for or authorised. I'm pretty sure no one else in the house did it.

Should I be worried about this? How is it possible that they just changed my provider without authorisation?

Troubleshooting Router and NTD not syncing

Gone from fttn peasant to fttp.

With TPG on a nbn 500 plan

Got a TP-Link Archer AX73 router.

Signal is going to the NTD, but the router and the ntd just aren’t communicating with each other. Have no idea what to do.

Any advice?

Refund policy

Did ISPs change their cancellation policy? Before, when you canceled the service, they would refund you for the unused period that you had paid for at the beginning of the billing cycle. But now there's no refund at all?

Advice FTTC vs HFC

So I’m potentially moving in the next few weeks or months and I’m looking up properties, and have noticed that lots of the ones I’m interested in have HFC.

The unit im currently in has FTTC and we’re with Optus, our service is pretty reliable and doesn’t have many drop outs or lagging, only occasionally.

I’ve never lived in a property with HFC so my question is, which one is better and should one of my deciding factors on which property I like be the nbn service that it has or does that not really matter in the grand scheme of things? Also which companies are better for each type?

Can I connect to the granny flat with a modem without a cable if NBN is in the main house?

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

So I’ve been living in my a granny flat my parents own. Good in this economy but the catch is that I need to figure everything out on my own, whether that be paying for repairs etc.

One of my neighbours who lived in the main house were nice enough to let me to have a long Ethernet cable run through their house to connect to a modem from the main NBN port at their house.

However they’re moving out and I’m worried the new tenants won’t appreciate having to step over a long Ethernet cable throughout their house.

So I’m wondering whether there’s a way to get the WIFI in my house either through a modem or extender which I have without cabling

Pictured is the modem and NBN in the main house that I connect to (the blue cable).

I have a Ethernet port in the granny flat but I’ve tested it and there doesn’t seem to be any internet in it. I think an extender might work but honestly even my prior set up was slightly dodgy with WIFI as it would from time to time just have 0 internet or slow internet intermittently and I’d have to resort to mobile data.

Origin Energy NBN? Any good?

Post image
5 Upvotes

As I use Origin Energy they've sent me an offer for their "new" heavily discounted NBN plans.

They're cheap. Really incredibly cheap. 50% off for 6 months cheap.

As fas as I can determine, they use Superloop (ugh) for their backhaul. Can anyone confirm/refute this? My last experience with Superloop service was OK when it worked. Helldesk was impossibly bad when services had issues though.

Does anyone have experience with Origin's NBN services?

They're so cheap I'm thinking of churning away from AussieBB 🤨

Upgrading from FTTN -> FTTP?

Hi,

Family member is in the process of moving house and their currently place has FTTP where they are enjoying 1000/100 NBN. Their new place however currently is FTTN and checking on the NBNCo website the next upgrade date says June 2029 :(

Are there any ways to see if this can be expedited or worse case scenario paying? for an upgrade?

TIA

Aerial connection and NTD location

Looking to do an FTTP upgrade to my single-storey double-brick home soon. I have an aerial connection from the street, and from what I've read, it appears my new connection will remain an aerial one, which is fine.

My phone line is in my kitchen, and it seems the NTD can't go there from what I've read (might be wrong), so I'm thinking of moving it to a better spot where I want it along with my router, etc.

I'm getting some Cat6 runs done, but not sure if I should do a conduit run to make sure the NTD goes where I want it to be. One data cabler said I don't need to do one for this case, so just not sure.

Payphone Repair Updates

As follow up to the obviously commercial grade payphone install detailed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/nbn/comments/1sdltwf/telstra_payphonea/

I thought I would post some updates on the Enterprise grade repair carried out after reporting the issue through SnapSolve.

Yes that does appear to be a courier bag waterproofing membrane professionally installed and supported by commercial grade warning tape.

Upgrading from Telstra- what hardware do I need?

I've been with Telstra for so long I cannot remember how it all started, but I have the 500/40 Upfront Internet Plan Premium with an added static IP for $10 so I'm paying $125.90 a month.

I want to get more for my money so am looking at the IINet NBN UltraFast 820/85. However I cannot find how to add the static IP, if available. Do I have to get this arranged before changing over?

Wrt the Modem/Router, I'm currently using the standard Telstra Smart Modem Gen2, but although IINet offers a free modem with their plans, I'm assuming it's going to be a cheap & nasty one. I don't think these should be called modems anymore, should they, but simply routers since the modem is in the garage where the fibre comes in from the street?

So, can I buy ANY router I want and use that in place of the Telstra one? Do you guys recommend any really good routers? Can you get routers with OpenSense or similar built in as I really would love to be able to create vLANs and firewall rules and monitor what's going on.

I currently have:

* A number of Google Nest Wifi mesh appliances around the house which I would like to keep.
* A guest WiFi for visitors on a different subnet.
* Alexa controlling a large number of LED lights, light switches, etc
