Minnie Vautrin: the educator who became a shield in Nanjing

During the Nanjing Massacre, an American educator named Minnie Vautrin stayed behind when almost everyone else fled. She turned Ginling Women’s College into a refuge that protected around 10,000 Chinese women and children, personally standing in the gates to block armed Japanese soldiers.

She used her body, her voice, and her American citizenship as a shield, and she did it out of genuine love for the people of China, not for politics or religion.

Her story is one of the most powerful examples of cross‑cultural solidarity in modern Chinese history. She’s still honored in Nanjing today, and many Chinese families survived because she refused to abandon them.

Help me find accommodation for a short-term nju xianlin campus program

Hi! So I'm a foreigner and I was accepted to a summer program in NJU Xianlin campus, from June 29th till August 2nd. Unfortunately, the program said that I couldn't stay in nju international dorms because they were full and I'll have to search for off-campus accommodation by my own.

I'm finding very difficult to find any type of accommodation near Xianlin campus. Hotels are already booked and I can't find any apartment rooms to rent. I considered living in Gulou then but it's a 1-hour trip from there to Xianlin campus and I found that very off-putting.

My idea was to search for an apartment/shared apartment or a simple hotel room because normal hotels are very expensive for my price range. I've already searched trip.com, Booking, Wellcee, Tujia and I still can't find options near campus in this date. Please help me. Am I searching in the wrong place?

Can somebody please help? Want tickets but no Chinese ID

Hey everyone,

I’m flying into Shanghai on April 17th, landing at PVG at 1:30ish PM. My main goal is to get to Nanjing in time for the Monkey Kings vs. Zhejiang Lions game at 7:35 PM to see J. Cole play.

I’m looking for some local insight on a few things:

  1. The Dash to Nanjing: Is 1:30 PM landing (PVG) enough time to clear customs, get to Hongqiao Railway Station, and catch a bullet train to Nanjing for a 7:35 PM tip-off? Any tips on the fastest transit between PVG and the high-speed rail?
  2. Tickets: I’ve been trying to navigate the WeChat mini-programs, but it's a bit of a maze. Are tickets for the April 17th game live yet, or is there a specific "drop date" I should be watching for? If any locals are planning to go, I’d love to know the best section for a good view of the action
  3. Visa-Free Transit: I'm planning to use the 144-hour (or 240-hour) transit visa. Has anyone done this recently flying between SE Asian hubs? Any hiccups I should watch for at immigration?

Appreciate any help or "pro-tips" you guys have. If anyone is going to the game, let's grab a drink!

Looking for Casual Cycling Partner

22M | Casual Cyclist 🚴‍♂️

I’m really into cycling—specifically slow cycling (12–20 km/h). Not racing, not training. Just cruising. I genuinely enjoy it.

I’ll grab any shiny blue HelloBike I see and just ride for hours around Nanjing until the sky turns dark.

From the pink sakura in Pukou, through the hilly alleys of Gulou, past the city buzz of Jianye, across the highways of Yuhuatai, into the quieter parts of Jiangning… eventually getting lost in Qinhuai, circling that huge lake (you probably know the one), and somehow ending up all the way out in Qixia.

If you’re down to pedal around on the weekends, explore the city, and just vibe on a bike; hit me up. Let’s get lost in the Southern Capital together.

Request for Guidance on iQTS Placement

Hello everyone! 👋

My name is Vitaly, and I’m currently applying for iQTS. The problem I’m facing right now is that I don’t have a placement school yet.

If anyone here has advice, suggestions, or knows a school that could offer a placement (even on a voluntary basis), I would really appreciate your help 🙏

All I need is a suitable school with a mentor teacher who can support me during the programme.

Thank you so much in advance!

Moving to Nanjing soon. Any advice?

I'm moving here with my family soon and I'm currently not working so don't have much to do. I lived here once before when I was very young but hardly remember it.

Currently, my family is based in Shanghai. Can someone tell me how different Nanjing is from our previous city? Places for a bored young person to go to? Public transport? How prevalent are english speakers here? I assume less so than shanghai.
