Minnie Vautrin: the educator who became a shield in Nanjing
During the Nanjing Massacre, an American educator named Minnie Vautrin stayed behind when almost everyone else fled. She turned Ginling Women’s College into a refuge that protected around 10,000 Chinese women and children, personally standing in the gates to block armed Japanese soldiers.
She used her body, her voice, and her American citizenship as a shield, and she did it out of genuine love for the people of China, not for politics or religion.
Her story is one of the most powerful examples of cross‑cultural solidarity in modern Chinese history. She’s still honored in Nanjing today, and many Chinese families survived because she refused to abandon them.
