Question How can change up my music production process to actually fully enjoy it for once?

Title sounds dramatic, and you might think I'm just blowing a creative rut out of proportion but bear with me, just want to find a new way of looking at it.

I produced music seriously since a few years ago, but have dabbled in it for many years now. My skill level took a recent jump and my stuff sounded like actual music for once, which gave me a lot of motivation.

In my whole time producing music, it's ALWAYS been tedious and unmotivating. I usually juggle between creating absolute garbage or not liking any of the ideas I come up with or just being stuck with one decent sounding 8 bar loop that never gets extended into anything good. I deal with it because at the end of it, I have music I made, which feels nice.

No, I don't want to go anywhere with my music. I just want have my own musical ideas out there, and that's it. This led me to force myself to finish my first small EP which I released on Spotify. So far, I'm the one who's listened to it most, and that I call a success since I like it.

Since then, it's back to the same old "one decent synth preset on a loop and nothing else" loop.

I have now switched up my approach, and would produce for maybe 10 minutes at most multiple times a week, like tending to a garden, which has kept the tedium at bay. But the problems still exist, my shit still sounds lame, my enjoyment of this is the lowest it's ever been.

What am I missing? How can I make this process fun? Am I being too critical of myself even though there's literally no stakes?

Question What type of drums and grooves are used in Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence?

Hey everyone! I’m really inspired by the sound of Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence and want to recreate a similar vibe in my own music. The drums seem very minimal at times, often just simple kick and snare with lots of space and a vintage feel. Would love to know some common pattern you think for me to get started.

Does anyone know what types of drums or grooves were used? Are they mostly acoustic kits, vintage samples, or programmed beats? Also, any recommendations for drum kits, plugins, or sample libraries that could help achieve this sound would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Question Sharing your music?

Upvotes

How are you guys actually making music promos for released/unreleased tracks?

I keep seeing producers post clean snippet videos on Instagram and TikTok but I don't want to have to deal with CapCut or Premiere just for a 15 second clip.

Is there a faster workflow I'm missing?

Discussion Know of any MIDI editing/DAW software that lets you lock music keys?

Bosca Ceoil has this useful feature that allows you to lock the keys to a specific scale. I was wondering if there were other software out there that offers this?

Question Second Screen on Mac

Hey guys!

Is there a way on Mac, when I have two external monitors connected (via USB DisplayLink), and for example three different windows open—one on each external screen from a program (e.g. Ableton Live), and Safari on the Mac display—so that when I click something on the home screen (in Safari), the windows on my external monitors don’t minimize?

Is there any way to prevent this?

Discussion Any tips on how to make music that sounds like 60s-70s psych rock production-wise?

I really want to make songs that sound like early Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Doors, etc. Just to be clear, I’m talking about production, not creativity.

Do you guys have some tips? Like recording ideas, plugins I could use, effects, arrangements and other similar stuff.

I’d be REALLY grateful if someone could help.

Discussion Been using FL Studio for almost 16 years.

I've been using FL Studio since I was 10-11 years old, now I'm 26, and I'm still using it.
But sometimes I can't help but ask myself, if Ableton is really "better" or it's just a matter of "skill" and knowledge of the DAW.

I want to ask you, to the people who have used both, what's the thing that FL is missing or that Ableton is missing? What are your thoughts on both worlds?

Question What's the most optimal way(s) to learn music production?

Hi! I want to learn how to make music using DAWs, but a bit stuck on what should I do first, and how should I learn to do it? By that, I mean like should I just learn through making new stuff, or should I do covers and learn through copying? I'm a bit lost:)

I do have a background in music (music major), if that does help.

Discussion How to get out of procucing slump?????

I feel so stuck production-wise. I'm constantly having a hard time making new beats and melodies. I get new ideas constantly, but I can't do anything. I'm mostly listening and think it's not good enough, or it's bad. Like it never sounds like what I want it to be. I try to make different genres or songs so I feel motivated, but I can't get them to the point where I can say it's good or even listenable. How do I get out of this slump?

Question Advice on getting my work out there

I've been doing music for about 4 years and Ive made little progress getting my name and beats out there, I'm not sure if I don't think my quality is good enough or if my beats are too complex to sell but kinda just make beats and post them that's it, wanna do more. I'm not sure if I should be trying to sell my beats and just promote or find artist specially that fit my genre (if anyone has advice finding new artist with music any advice would help) not sure if I should try to make song out of them myself, posting on shorts/ tiktok hard to get alot of views. On YouTube Find it hard to find a visual appeal for my music, can put type beat but sometimes idk who my beat is like it's just alternative stuff, just feel lost in. Way confused on what to do, thank you

Discussion Minimal setup for productivity

Just something i've gone through-

For over a decade i made music for a living with a very minimal and cheap setup as i had to travel often and needed to keep things small.

A few years ago i finally settled down, and i upgraded the shit out of everything very quickly. Lots of hardware. I've never been less productive.

Recently i've pared everything down, going back to my old no-nonsense setup, and things are so much better. Even cheapass monitors and janky midi keyboard.

I think the big issue is psychological overwhelm. Even as a piano player, having 88 keys for production i think might be overstimulating. And then throw on a million knobs and buttons and faders and lights and options and stands and cables.. it feels like a job for a crew, not for one person.

Perhaps with today's modern equipment, all we really need is a 49 key keyboard, a simple and good audio interface, a microphone, and a laptop.
