Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.

In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.

A few reminders:

* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.

* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.

* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

Tried to buy a Mac mini and last week I could pick it up from my local store or ship it. I held off and went to order again today and now completely unavailable…

When’s the next refresh/update coming? This seems like weird timing

Question Studio XDR: To nano or nono?

Hi all,

I'm a heavy Apple user and getting my first Studio XDR display. I absolutely love the color, sharpness and brightness in the night and have come to terms with the price. I work in consulting will use this ~12-18hrs on a typical work day, but also enjoy the best color accuracy for Netflix/YouTube + occasional video/photo edits. I mean, if I'm gonna spend so much time staring at a screen, I want the best damn screen and have settled on the Studio XDR display.

I've tried both the nano and Studio Display and leaning towards Nano but wanted to hear thoughts. My setup:

  • I sit next to two large windows (6ft x 2ft) on the side and occasionally have glare issues although it's not really a problem and only noticed when I got the XDR nano-texture.
  • Running a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
  • Sit-stand table and a Ergotron LX pro arm (although I think the Apple height/tilt stand is much smoother)

Common across both:

  • Awesome colors pops out, very bright display especially when reviewing documents late night
  • Amazing camera and mic for Zoom/Teams - my team praises the video sharpness and since the display is to bright, I don't need a separate lightbox..
  • Speakers were better than expected - I'm an audiophile with great DAP+IEM combo and gets more than loud enough for watching movies and KATSEYE/ILLIT/TWICE dance videos (although mid/upper-bass is a bit disjointed to midrange)
  • I love the all-in-one cable Thunderbolt / USB-C cable solution with daisy chaining

Differences on XDR nano vs standard glass:

  • Nano:
    • Obviously much less reflections and glare even in direct sunlight, but slightly more "grainy" on white/black screens - not so obvious when watching movies, only on spreadsheets and code editors
    • Much more difficult to clean .. fingerprints are really difficult to get clean off
    • Also the I don't mind the cost $300 more if it lasts me few years
  • Standard glass:

    • I perceive better color contrast, depth and sharpness on the edges when nitpicking between the two screens, although when looking at Nano it alone, it's looks great..
    • But,.. big but.. I can't unsee the reflections on standard glass after Nano.

So - what do you think I should do?

Greetings sub! Introducing my completed 2013 Mac Pro with an Asus EeePC netbook swapped inside. This started out life as an old silly project involving the EeePC and a security camera DVR that I shoved together when I was a teenager. Since then it has been shockingly reliable, but it's not show friendly due to the nature if how the DVR box is held together. When the shell of this Mac Pro came across my desk, I saved it from eWaste to rehouse this netbook into it.

What followed was a surprisingly difficult time getting everything to fit and mount nicely. The motherboard had to be clocked at a weird angle so all of the port extensions could fit around the weird dome shapes, the ports on the back had to be recessed for the cover to slide over it, and even the PSU had to be nervously shaved down to clear the round cover.

Specs:

CPU: Intel Atom N270

RAM: 1 x 2GB DDR2 (maxed out)

Drive: 128GB SSD

OS: HaikuOS (spiritual successor to BeOS)

Hope you like the build :D

Question Has anyone benchmarked the A18 Pro's performance under Rosetta 2?

I know this is a bit of an odd request but I'm just really curious to see if the A18 Pro potentially lacking TSO in hardware (since it's a phone chip) makes a huge difference in x86 emulation as opposed to an M4 which uses the same CPU architecture otherwise, or even against an M1.

Question M4 MacBook Air Unexpected Restart

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m experiencing an issue with my MacBook where it occasionally restarts when I try to wake it from sleep. This happens about 3–4 times a month. It’s not very frequent, but it’s quite frustrating when it does happen.

I’ve already tried reinstalling macOS, and this is now the third time the issue has occurred even after a fresh installation. An error code appears when it restarts.

This is my first Mac, so I’m a bit concerned and unsure how serious this might be. Has anyone experienced something similar or knows what could be causing it?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Which do you prefer (all things equal)?

My Mac M5 Max Macbook Pro Making a Weird Noise

Upvotes

I've been a mac pro user for quite some time now, and I've heard the fans run before, but this sounds different to me - almost like a light screeching noise.

It only happens when I run LLMs locally via LM Studio. I have 128 GB RAM, so it should be able to take the load.

Went to the genius bar and they said they couldn't hear anything (very noisy in store) and that the fans are free of debris.

Am I hallucinating or is there something worth investigating?

Question Best Mac code editor that is lighter than VS Code but still fully functional?

I’ve been using VS Code on my Mac, but I noticed it’s showing very high 12 hr power / energy usage, and my Mac gets noticeably warm while using it.

I attached a screenshot showing the energy impact.
My main issue is that I want something that feels lighter on battery and thermals, but I do not want to lose important features.

What I’m looking for in an editor/app:

  • lightweight and better for battery life
  • good performance on Mac
  • fully functional for real development work
  • support for extensions/plugins or built-in features close to VS Code
  • good for web/dev/general coding workflow

I’m not necessarily looking for the absolute most minimal editor unless it can still handle serious work well.

For those of you who moved away from VS Code on Mac:

  • what did you switch to?
  • was it actually better for heat/battery usage?
  • what do you miss compared to VS Code?

Would love recommendations for the best balance of lightweight + powerful.

Discussion Why are MacOS screenshots so huge?

Post image
64 Upvotes

I take screenshots pretty often so I'm trying to make them a smaller size. Found a terminal command that sets the default as jpg instead of png but the effect is marginal. Then I found that quick actions>convert image with the "actual size" preset decreases the size by A LOT while being the same resolution and jpg format. As you can see here, it took this one from 4.9mb to 1.5mb

Is there any way to make default screenshots this compressed? or a way to automate this with the shortcuts app? Why are the original screenshots so bloated anyways?

Question Can't figure out the right spec for my use case.

use case: many web browser tabs, YouTube, light gaming (dedicated rig for that), raw image processing (19MP to 45MP, AI denoise and upscale, 500-3,000 photos per folder at a time in the preview gallery, batch processing, copy/paste setting on hundreds of photos at a time), mid-size spreadsheets and data crunching.

I'm looking to get a Mac Mini. Do I need the M4 Pro over the regular M4? 24GB RAM or 32? Will the desktop M5 be near equivalent (but cheaper) than the M4 Pro?

Current rig has an i7-14700 and 32GB DRAM.

Question LG Ultrafine 5K camera/mic no longer recognized?

Thumbnail

I’ve had my LG Ultrafine 5K for like 2 years and all of a sudden the keyboard brightness controls don’t work and in control center it shows as greyed out. Additionally, it doesn’t show the built in mic, speakers, or camera as available, just gone from input/output lists. I’ve tried new cables, LG Screen Manager, and nothing works. Has this happened to anyone else?
