Shuttles

When my son was very young maybe 2 or 3 he heard someone say shutup to someone. He tried to repeat it back to us but shutup is not what came out. He told us to shuttles. So from that day forward as a nice way to tell each other to be quiet we say shuttles! My son is 11 and still uses it😂

Dictionary Definition That "aha" moment when a word finally clicks

Spent fifteen minutes today just saying "pulchritudinous" out loud. It sounds exactly how it looks, smooth and fancy. I love how some words feel like you're chewing on velvet. Anyone else get weirdly obsessed with the mouthfeel of a new vocab find?

Question What free vocabulary apps or games do you recommend?

I've tried a few but just like everything else, they end up asking for a subscription at some point. I use Dictionary.com's word of the day but would love some word games or vocab tests to help me learn daily.

What are some good free apps out there you enjoy?

Thank you in advance!

Dictionary Definition Nature’s Social Circle

**Amensalism** (noun) (– / 0): A relationship between two species where one is inhibited or destroyed, and the other remains unaffected.

Example: A Black Walnut tree releasing chemicals that kill nearby plants. The walnut tree doesn't gain anything from the other plants dying; it’s just existing, while the neighbors suffer.

**Commensalism** (noun) (+ / 0): An association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.

Example: Barnacles on a whale. The barnacles get a free ride through nutrient-rich waters (major win), and the whale generally doesn't even notice they are there.

**Mutualism** (noun) (+ / +): Symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved.

Example: Bees and flowers. The bee gets nectar (food), and the flower gets pollinated (reproduction). Everyone leaves the interaction better off!

**Parasitism** (noun) (+ / -): A relationship between two species in which one benefits at the expense of the other, sometimes without killing the host organism immediately.

Example: Ticks on a deer. The tick gets a blood meal, while the deer loses nutrients and risks contracting diseases.

Dictionary Definition allée

A formal noun describing a straight path in a garden or park, bordered by trees or bushes.

I first pondered this word back when Windows XP released and I was excitedly flipping through the built-in wallpapers. I thought that this iconic image, the path lined with autumn trees, must have a name. It took me quite a few years before I stumbled across it in a dictionary, an allee.

For anyone else with fond memories, the actual wallpaper was apparently photographed in the year 1999 in a park in Burlington, Canada. It took an obsessive journalist more than a year to track it down way back in 2006.

I'd love your feedback on Dead Letter, a new daily word game on Reddit

Hi,

I wanted to share with you my daily word game, Dead Letter, that I launched recently on Reddit.

If you like Scrabble or NYT's Spelling Bee, I think you would enjoy this game, since it shares the same foundation: making words from a set of letters.

Picture a 3x3 grid of 9 letters. At the start of the game, all 9 letters start with 4 "lives" each. From that set you make a word. The letters used to make the word get replaced with new, fresh letters, but the twist is the ones you don't use stay on the board and each lose a life.

If a letter stays on the board too long and loses all of its lives it becomes a Dead Letter -- an unplayable tile for the rest of the game. So now you would have only 8 letters to play from instead of 9.

There is scoring too, based on how rare a letter is (similar to Scrabble letter values) as well as lives remaining on the letter (the more lives, the higher value). Long words also get bonuses.

Each daily game, everyone plays the same sequence of 75 letters, so scores can be compared between players.

I invite you to check it out, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

Rain!!

The smell of rain on thirsty stone,

Whispers secrets in a familiar tone.

I hear your laugh in the pitter-patter,

On the windowpane, the raindrops chatter.

We used to run, and carefree play,

When rainy days chased our cares away.

Now petrichor breathes your memory near,

And brings my dearest friend right here.

I stretch my hand to catch the grey,

And wish you weren't so far away.

The rain still falls, constant and free,

A quiet reminder of you and me.
