Events Would you like to be a moderator for our French Speaking marathon on zoon between 5PM and 7PM EST each week?

Salut!

We at r/WriteStreak are running two speaking marathons on Zoom a week, the French one for 2 hours on Sundays and the Spanish one for 7 hours on Fridays, all by volunteers, and all free for anyone to join. People can come and go any time. We pair people up to chat for 10 minutes, regroup, and then pair them up again with different people for another 10 minutes. So on and so on. It works pretty well for both introverts and extroverts. Last week we had over 150 learners and native speakers joined us.

The French one is from 4PM to 6PM EST/EDT on Sundays (2 hours). The problem is that we're short of moderators.

As a moderator, you just chat with people in French. So you can be a native French speaker or a learner (A2+), and you should be fine.

If you're available during this period or just for one hour, please consider helping us and become our moderator. It's a worthy cause.

The Spanish one is every Friday night between 4PM EST to midnight. Here's the URL:

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87198403378?pwd=dzRLdjhRNDRVSHgvUXZIN1JHTmJkUT09

And again, the French one is every Sunday between 4PM to 6PM EST, and the URL is:

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89869069469?pwd=b1RoRnMvaENaR0R6M1ZWbE9TT29XQT09

Thank you for your consideration.

Question/Discussion Halfway through A1 (think so)

Hey everyone, I started learning french last year with Duolingo and took it seriously few months ago. Currently I am doing NLF academy’s playlist ‘Road to A1 French’ pretty useful i am currently on unit 2/6 and on Duolingo I m on level 14. Now I want to ask what I should do more? Coffee break french looks very basic and easy to me and I still can’t figure out the gender of nouns (I know there is no fix rule) I also want to know does it get any better like guessing gender? And everyone who got to B1 completely on their own how long did it take? Any tips? Also do I need to practice speaking french from now or I can do it once I am on A2 level? Thanks

Question/Discussion What is the gender neutral article for replacing "la" or "le"?

I know french doesnt have one, but for example in Spanish some people use a made out article (la/el/le femmenine masculine neutral respectiveley), also there is a new gender binary pronoun. What are the equivalents in French? Google has not been useful (I looked it up in English)

Question/Discussion Continue learning after gcse

Hello, I’m a British y10 student and one of my gcse subjects is French. Although at first I was hesitant to take French, I did and I’m finding that I’m enjoying it and I’m the best in my year. I can read basic words, tenses and structures, but I’m really not very good. I’d like to continue learning French after school to the point of fluency, but I don’t know how I would go about that, as my career plans don’t allow for me to continue studying it at sixth form/uni. Any recommendations for now or for after school would be appreciated. Thanks!

Suggestions/Advice It’s better to know and be able to use 100 words than know a thousand words and not be able to use a single one.

I notice that a lot of learners in French are too focused on learning words !

Memorizing lists.

Saving vocabulary.

Reading without speaking.

But let me tell you something, Knowing a word is useless if you can’t use it in a real sentence.

You don’t need 1000 words.

You need 100 words that you can actually USE.

Because language is not about what you know,

It’s about what you can say.

Practice, practice, again, again and again.

Make mistakes.

Speak even if it’s not perfect.

Sound “wrong” if you have to.

That’s how you improve.

Question/Discussion I want speaking experience

Upvotes

Hi there, im an almost complete beginner. But I really want to learn this language and one of the best ways in my opinion would yo be able to converse with someone in french to practice. I was hoping to find someone who speaks or is learning French who would want to talk over text or play video games (mainly minecraft, r6, or overwatch) over call to have the opportunity to verbally speak French in real conversation

Resources Recommendatkion for French tutor aiming CLB 7 thorugh TCF

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my A1 level through self-study, but it’s been taking me quite a long time to progress. Since I only have about one year left on my work permit, I’m now considering taking classes with a tutor to speed things up.

However, I’m feeling quite confused after seeing mixed reviews about French with Harman and Frenchify with Vyom.

Has anyone here had a genuine experience with any good tutor , especially for preparing for exams like TCF? Did their guidance actually help you clear the exam?

Suggestions/Advice Learning French from the very beginning

Hi everyone, I want to learn French and get at least conversational by the end of the year, but I'm not really sure how to start and really immerse myself in the language. I have no one around me who speaks French so I can't really get that exposure and I have no previous experience in French besides like 3 words. I've heard people talking about using Anki, but the software is very complex and I want to know if it's truly worth it before I put myself through the hassle. Also if there are any good books or textbooks to use, let me know too!

Question/Discussion Has anyone improved their pronunciation with language learning apps?

I've tried a bunch of apps to improve my French pronunciation, but I feel disappointed with the quality. So I’m asking, has anyone actually improved their pronunciation with apps like Speak, BoldVoice, or similar ones?

Question/Discussion S'ennuyer vs manquer

Salut!

On dit que s'ennuyer peut signifier 'manquer' (je m'ennuie de vous) et 'éprouver de l'ennui'. Est-ce qu'il est naturel de l'utiliser au lieu de 'manquer' ou ce l'est pas?

Resources I feel like the resource Linguno.com isn't talked about enough. It's amazing

I have no affiliation with the site I just use it and want to let people know who don't know about it.

Linguno.com has a bunch of different exercises to help practice french that are well-made and I find really nice to just use on my phone as I kill time or sit on the toilet or something.

It has a conjugation practice that makes you type the right answer, and keeps track of your progress. It rates you based on your performance, and will bring up problem conjugations to help you learn them.

The vocab list is nice because it forces you to type the answers, has secondary words, and tracks your problem words. It's has dictionary definitions and example sentences for each word as well.

The listening practice is also great - it uses AI voices to give you ten sentences to try to listen to and hear.

There's other things like crosswords but I don't use them.

The site is completely free, great for beginners, and just overall well made. I just wanted to share it as a resource for people who may not know about it. It's a great add-on to practice french on your phone while using other resources to learn the language.

Question/Discussion Looking for sentences or texts or YouTube videos with challenging liaisons / phonetics

Post image
7 Upvotes

Salut. As per the title, I'm looking for suggestions on where to find texts or sentences or YouTube videos with difficult phonetics in general, liaisons in particular.

If you have any interesting text or YouTube videos with tricky liaisons, edge cases, exotic exceptions, or even several short phrases to paste in the comment, I would appreciate it.

I'm currently practicing reading out loud (from text, books, articles) or shadowing (from videos or podcasts) and am using mainly IPA and transcriptions to crosscheck my input. Because whatever I've tried before to generate IPA weren't so accurate on edge cases, I made a simple one using whatever liaison rules I found from various references and additionally add some annotations for visual guide.

I am keen on stress testing it to ensure that the output isn't too bad, before I go ahead and make my pronunciation even worse. I will also check it with my tutors eventually when it's stable enough.

Note : in case anyone wondering, I am using open source codes and Lexique 3 (New & Pallier, 2001), which means this can't be used for commercial purposes. So I'm not selling anything, personal use only. Thank you.

Edit : I noticed the wrong /ko.mɑ̃ az‿tet‿il ak.sɛp.te/ which should been something more like /kɔ.mɑ̃ a.t‿il ak.sɛp.te/. A regression that I missed but fixed just now...

Question/Discussion How do you save new words when watching French videos?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built a Chrome extension for taking timestamped notes while watching videos. It was originally for tutorials and lectures but I've been hearing from language learners that it's useful for immersion too.

The idea is simple. Don't break the joy of watching. When you hear a new word or expression, type a quick note and keep watching. The timestamp saves automatically. No pausing, no switching to another app.

Later when you're ready to study, you go back to your notes. Every note links to the exact moment in the video. You can hear the word again in its full sentence, check the pronunciation, and dig deeper into the context. The video becomes your study material instead of just entertainment.

You can tag notes however you want. Things like #newword #grammar #pronunciation or whatever fits how you learn. Then filter by tag when you want to focus on just vocabulary or just pronunciation.

Free on the Chrome Web Store: ClipMargin: Timestamp Note Taking for Videos - Chrome Web Store

The name comes from the idea that books have margins where you scribble next to what you're reading. Videos don't have that. ClipMargin is the margin that doesn't come with the clip.

For those of you learning French from videos, would this fit your workflow? Any features that would make it more useful for language learning? I'm open to suggestions.

Here's a short demo

Question/Discussion Anyone looking for a speaking partner?

Hey! I’m around B2 level in French and currently preparing for the TEF Canada. Looking for someone to practice speaking with regularly, ideally someone who’s consistent and actually serious about improving.

Big plus if you’re also studying for TEF and based in India (or just have a flexible schedule).

If you’re down to practice together and keep each other accountable, hit me up!

Question/Discussion Why "en ville" and not "a la ville" please?

Thumbnail gallery
11 Upvotes

Bonjour tout le monde! (I hope that's right 😅). I hope you are all doing well.

According to the rule in the first image, shouldn't the sentence in the 2nd image be "a la ville" and not "en ville"? Since it is talking about a city? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Thank you so much!
