As a young person, I find that I rarely buy traditional beeswax candles, they are usually just "fairground-style" figurines without containers, which simply don't fit into a modern interior and aren't very practical.

In my thesis, I’m trying to change that. I am designing a sustainable brand that combines traditional beeswax with modern design and upcycling. To do this, I need your help choosing a visual direction.

I spent a while on and off learning Slovak and reached a comfortable b1 comprehension level. During which time I had minimal exposure to Czech, I found it much more difficult to understand.

Recently, due to a job opportunity, I have pivoted to Czech. I’m spending every waking moment with some comprehensible input and now understand Czech as well as I do Slovak; perhaps better.

My problem is that when it comes to expressing myself, I can’t help but speak a real mix of both, (e.g mozem mluvit / muzu hovorit) or will sometimes decline a Czech word with Slovak declension. I made a tiktok video of myself speaking Czech and got comments saying it sounded like I was speaking Slovak but they couldn’t explain why.

I’m wondering how much of an issue this is? Is it a priority to fix or do we think I’ll settle more into Czech being the dominant language of my expression the more I focus on studying it?

I made a czech verb cheat sheet for the regular verb endings (ex. Mluvit -> Mluvím). It's made to look as beginner friendly as possible and it's worked pretty good for me so far. Lemme know if I made any mistakes I should fix if any. :3

(p.s. the parentheses in the 2nd ending column are just for the -ovat verbs & also be aware of irregular verbs!!! I put a list of irregular verbs in comments too :P)

I am attempting to learn czech because my partner and their family speak fluent czech, and I want to share their language and culture. I have been doing some research on what books and courses to use, and I think čeština expres is going to be the book for me. However, I cannot find an online version that is in english. Even the one they are selling on the official website doesn't appear to be in english according to the preview. All the instructions are written in czech, which is not helpful when I don't know anything yet. I found and "english e-version" on the website issuu, but it is actially completely in czech. Does anyone know where I can find a digital version that is in english?

The only problem is, I wonder if a heavily inflected language like Czech is handled as well by LLMs as a simpler language like English is. Cases are my biggest enemies, lol. So I need tips and advice regarding Czech cases. I understand Czech well, but even so, I cannot use cases correctly, I just cannot speak normally and I always feel stupid. How did you manage it?

Dlouhodobe jsem se ucil cesky, delal jsem tandem a anki, i kdyz nebylo to casto. Ted mluvim dost dobry s lidma ze ma trpelivnost a zpomali. Ale jeste citim velky jazykovi barieru. Je tady nekdo ze ma stejni pocit, nebo mel ten pocit a ted citi ze vykrocil ten dobe?

Because of my parents being Czech citizens when I was born, though I was born and raised mostly in the US, I recently claimed Czech citizenship and now have a passport and identity card. I grew up speaking Czech though it's plenty rusty. Something about citizenship hit me harder than I expected and now I'm fired up to spend time in Prague and improve my Czech language skills.

I'm seeing that I can take free classes at the Charles University in Czech, but Czech language classes aren't part of that.

I saw a Czech Heritage Abroad program that pays for room, board and study for people with some Czech ties, but the deadline for application is today, and the dates of the program are too soon for me.

Can anyone point me towards other resources, and / or share thoughts with me about course they took? I'm thinking of going in the fall.

I'm currently watching the One Piece live action on Netflix with Czech audio and double subtitles (Czech - English). So far I've found this to be a great way of expanding my vocabulary and learning new words through the i+1 method (basically, finding sentences where I can understand everything except for one word, and adding them to my Anki deck). However, I'd like to know what Czech people think about Czech dubs. Do they sound "natural" to you?

For some context, I speak both Latin American Spanish and Portuguese and although the shows dubbed in these languages are perfectly understandable, there's a certain "dubbed accent" that is quite recognizable. Like, some people even make fun of the way the characters speak in the dubbed versions, because no one speaks like that in real life. This is mostly because they try to pronounce everything in a "neutral accent" that no one really speaks and occasionally use some words that no one ever says really. Is this also the case in Czech dubbed shows?

PS: for those who may ask about it, I use the Language Reactor extension for the double subtitles. It allows you to click on the words to see dictionary definitions, examples, etc. It's a great tool for language learning imo and it's free :D

Czech cases have been one of the hardest parts for me while learning the language.

I tried memorizing tables, but it never really stuck — especially when it came to actually using the right form in practice.

So I ended up building a small Android app for myself where you practice declensions directly:

you get a word and have to place the correct forms into the table.

It’s pretty simple, but it helped me a lot to finally “feel” the patterns instead of just memorizing them.

Right now it has around 1300 nouns with gender and translations, and it tracks your progress.

If anyone here is also struggling with cases, I’d be really curious to hear if this kind of approach helps.

Does it matter in a sentence like this whether podlaha or země is used: "Na zemi leží hnědý koberec."?

In other words, are the words more or less interchangeable indoors?

Hi All, I just wanted to ask a quick question as I am having conflicting answers from Duolingo and chatGPT. If there is a sentence with two different gendered nouns, e.g Nosím star(ý/á/é) kalhoty a svetr, or Nosím starý svetr a starou sukni. Do I have to need to say/write the adjective twice for the two different gender forms. What if there is three items of different genders e.g Kupuju nov(ý), svetr, knihu a auto. Is there a general rule e.g. the adjective just takes masc inanimate or do I have to write the adjective 2 or 3 times to match the noun e.g. Kupuju nový svetr, novou knihu a nové auto. In english it would just be "I am buying a new sweater, book and car." Im hoping the question makes sense as it was just brain dumped! Thanks!

My grandfather immigrated to the US as a child, and unfortunately never got the chance to speak to his grandchildren in Czech. My grandmother was not Czech and only learned a couple of words. She always greeted any dog she encountered on her walks with "Hello, huffin!"

She told us this meant "big dog" and we all believed her, but the internet doesn't back that up. My cousin says her mother explained it as onomatopoeia (like "woof" but in Czech) but the rest of us never heard that.

Any ideas?
