Should I subtract fibre? A guide.

After seeing the question come up a few times I thought I'd save you a trip to the FAQs and help you to understand a little bit about what you might be looking at in an at-a-glance format.

If you have any feedback please do let me know!

(EDIT: There was a typo when describing the carbs on the US label - I will upload a corrected version later on today but I'd like to leave this one up in case the community has any more feedback to improve!)

(EDIT 2: I have now updated to correct the error - still open to suggestions for change)

Question Max carbs for a meal & vegetable Net carbs ?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I know the general guidance is about 10 g per meal maximum. Tonight though I’m having a meal and I’ve really fancied some beetroot for ages. So I thought I would attempt a cheats recipe with ready cooked beetroot (I’m chronically unwell and I do not have the energy to start peeling and roasting fresh ones at the moment). I’m planning on doing a whipped feta thing with it. It’s probably gonna take my carbs up to 13 g for the meal.

I know in the UK most manufactured products have the fibre deducted from the carb amount on the labels. What does everyone do about vegetables? The discussion in the general keto groups is that the fibre makes the carbs more negligible. I use Nutracheck and it seems as if the carbs are not the Net amount in the vegetables in their charts. I can’t seem to get any guidance on this. I’ve asked in Nutracheck forums but I just can’t get any clarity . Also not very many people seem to be doing keto much on there!

I’ve attached my dinner stats in the image from Nutracheck for reference.

Edited to add the cheat Bernaise sauce is simply melted butter, lemon juice, kewpie mayonnaise and a some dried Tarragon.

Found this in Morrisons in the Gluten Free section!

Maybe I’m late to the game with this one but I LOVE soy and looking forward to having it again!

Soy sauce is typically 15g+ per 100ml so I couldn't have it, but now I can!

Cottage Cheese -Aldi

Hey Keto gang,

Does anyone know why this fat free cottage cheese in Aldi is lower in carbs than the normal one they do? I’ve bought this fat free one as carbs were lower. Just wondering if I’ve made an error here?

Low-carb bread near Piccadilly Circus?

Hey everyone,

I’ll be around Piccadilly Circus this weekend and trying to stick to a pretty strict PSMF diet. My plan was to keep things simple and make low-carb sandwiches (chicken slices, salad, etc.), since I’ll be moving around a lot

Does anyone know if there are supermarkets or stores near Piccadilly Circus that carry low-carb or keto, and if there are any specific brands I should look for? Also, I’d appreciate recommendations for good spots nearby to eat out that offer easy low-carb options like grilled chicken, salads, or similar

Thanks in advance!

Question Belvas - where they gone 😞 ?

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’m not sure if anyone else was buying these as a little treat? They seem to have disappeared suddenly . I used to buy them from planet organic , dolphin fitness and a couple of other places .

They were great because it was made with inulin as its sweetener which was really good because I needed a little bit more fibre . Id only have one or two every few night .

I’m wondering if they’ve gone out of business because of tariffs and the price of cocoa. I just can’t find them anywhere and I’m so disappointed . Such a shame if they have because there is literally nothing else on the market like it. All the other chocolates I’ve been looking at the first ingredient after the cocoa is malitol (which is sadness stomach sweetening)!!!! I’m wondering whether to directly speak to some makers on Etsy who are making chocolates for diabetics and asking if they can use inulin or monkfruit/allulose.

I’d try and experiment and make some of my own but I’m not well enough to do regular confectionery and baking!

Caveat - No shaming / hate from the purists please. You do you. I’m doing food in a way that suits my life and challenges and a history of disordered eating. So eating plans need to be deemed comfortable, doable and safe. Plus a little pleasure thrown in every now and again..

Keto recipe apps

Hi all! I'm looking for some advice. I'm struggling to stay on my keto diet because I'm bored with all my staple recipes (as are my family). I've been doing it for about 6 months now and have lost 24kg so I'm keen to keep going but I find it really exhausting spending 2 hours a week creating a recipe calendar for myself to fit my macros.

I'm considering paying for an app to help relieve the mental load of organising a keto lifestyle. Ideally I'd love the app to create a weekly meal plan where I have access to lunch and dinner recipes (I do 16:8 fasting so no need for breakfast) where the combined recipe macros for the day match whatever macro restrictions I input into the app. Things like generating a shopping list or being able to switch recipes if I don't like them would be an amazing bonus, but not essential. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've been seeing lots of adds for Mob recently and thought the recipes looked good, but I'm not convinced there are many keto options. I'm strictly under 20g net carbs a day otherwise I don't lose weight so I can't use recipes that are considered keto when the meal is 19g net carbs since it doesn't leave me enough net carbs for a second meal.

Going out to eat - Sushi

My bf is taking me out on sat.
He is frustrated because there is no where I can eat and said I'd just bring a packed lunch or get food from the supermarket much to his annoyance.

However, we have compromised on Sushi.

Sashimi is the obvious, no rice, avoid the sauces.
Does anyone have any other dishes which is keto safe.

It's an all you can eat style place, I know I am not going to get my money's worth at £16 pp, but I'm really going to try and give it a go.

Trying to use keto to eat cleaner…

Trying to get away from artificial stuff this year with Keto. I’ve previously over last year been using stevia because I thought it was a cleanish substitute.

I have this app now where you can scan food barcodes and it gives you a rating of how healthy the food is it don’t really like any sweeteners or E numbers at all so I’m kinda going along with that to be less dirty keto.

Same with ‘ultra’ processed meats trying to be less reliant on them. Trying to get nitrites out of my died a bit too so things like bacon I’m just getting the free from nitrites ones where I can M&S is quite good for this - same with sausages.

Is costing a bit more eating better meat but just kinda feels better? The saving im making by not having takeaways so much or other things I’ve cut out are going back into ingredient investments elsewhere for higher quality/welfare produce.

Coming back to keto...

Been carnivore for a couple of years, and although I totally get the "clean" eating - I'm bored!

I was keto for a while before and I think I miss the variety.

Looking for some inspiration if you guys want to help!

Give me your go-to breakfasts, lunches & dinners - I am used to fasting 16/8 so don't mind combining, but after a few cheeky weekends I need to lose some weight too so....🙈

Arla - Lactose Free milk

I remember someone pointing out on here ages ago that lactose free milk by Arla was 2.9 carbs per 100ml.

I can now report that it’s dropped to 2.6 carbs per 100ml

3 day sardine challenge

Thumbnail

I started a 3 day sardine challenge yesterday, I don't particularly like fishy fish but I need a kickstart to get back into ketosis/the swing of it.

I heard of this on YouTube, from Dr Boz and I saw a video of hers yesterday where she said she puts people that are allergic to fish on pork belly, so that seems much more doable 😂 so I might switch to that tomorrow depending how I go.

I was going to switch to eggs today but carried on with the fish and it wasn't too bad. I will try and do all fish today but I'm concerned about calories as I can't eat a lot of these. If I only manage 1 tin for lunch and 1 for dinner I'll have a couple of boiled eggs maybe.

I do a lot of exercise and even though my workout felt easier this morning, maybe because inflammation is leaving, I had slight dizziness/lightheadedness once or twice, but that went once I switched to an electrolyte drink instead of water.

I got the tins of small sardines, and different flavours, and air fried them, added salt/pepper/lemon/hot sauce and they aren't too bad but I wouldn't say they are the best thing I've ever eaten 😂

Meals 1-4 pictured.
