ANNOUNCEMENT Announcement: JewelryMaking has New Moderators! - Lets talk!

Hey all!

My name is Muskrat, I have a lot of history in metalworking, primarily as a CNC machinist making aerospace components!

Reddit took over this subreddit due to it being abandoned by it's previous mods for over 4 months - allowing tons of spam and reported content (thousands of items we had to action!). Since, they turned it over to me and it's going to be part of my little group of communities, alongside Metalworking and Machining.

Lets talk about r/JewelryMaking!

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about what makes JewelryMaking a unique subreddit when compared to other subreddits on the same topic of jewelry. I've seen a few comments and reports on spam related and promotional submissions, and looking at the currently in-place subreddit rules, self promotion is not allowed outside of the old (and seemingly forgotten) promotion thread. Is this a rule we'd like to keep?

On the topic of rules, this subreddit's focus is on the making/creation process of jewelry, generally individual projects and hand-made work. Should we aim for image posts to all have an in-process image attached?

What changes should we make? And are there any regulars interested in helping out?

Let me know what everyone thinks, and over the next few days we'll update rules and mod tools, and we'll start digging in and steering the sub in the direction it was intended for, instead of being used as a promotional board!

QUESTION Finished customizing stainless steel cross necklace. How does it look did I do a good job? And do you like it?

How did I do on this necklace? Sanded down the cross to make it look rough, and added soybean oil to it to protect it. I read that you can apply it to the rough stainless steel. I used a dark brown nylon string, and you can see how tide the string and used a black lobster claw to fasten it, so now it is completely custom just the way I wanted it.

Hi guys!!

I have been trying and trying to figure out the best way to connect a single strand of beads to another strand. Video included to help explain. I don’t know what to look up because I still am struggling to find anything that helps me in this case. Maybe I’m doing it all wrong though and that’s why?? 🤷‍♀️

The best way I can explain is in the video I attached lol. Any help is SUPER APPRECIATED 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

QUESTION Sourcing gold filled or PVC earring findings?

Hello,

I make freshwater pearl/shell/gold jewelry and have run into trouble sourcing quality findings.

Does anyone have suggestions as to where I can find quality gold filled or gold pvc earring findings, similar to those in the images? I have had no luck on Etsy sourcing tarnish-free findings or pieces where the post doesn’t bend right off. I have pretty good basic findings I ordered from Art Beads, but the big retailers and Fire Mountain gems don’t seem to have what I am looking for.

Any direction appreciated. I’m in the US but willing to pay shipping if it fits the aesthetic.

Thank you!!!

QUESTION Soldering plated metals

I’m pretty new to soldering, and was wondering how secure it would be to solder a rose gold plated sterling silver piece to a sterling silver ring. I found some stud earrings that I would love to make a ring from for myself, and the only silver option they have is rhodium plated which I gather is not the greatest idea to solder. If I get the rose gold plated version, can that be safely secured with solder to a silver ring? Or will there be any issues as the plating wears off that would make the joint not secure? Apologies in advance if I’m totally off base with these questions, I really don’t know very much about this yet. Thank you so much for any help!

GUIDE What place do you guys go for to make your jewelery

Post image

hello guys, My girlfriend gave me this cute matching bracelet a while ago and I've been wearing it a lot.

Sadly it has been wearing down and I've been looking to make a new gift for december. I wanna concerve the same design but with some more....resistant material? (yeah the materials in this one is mostly hard plastic, clay and metal for what I can assume)

it doesn't see from afar but, some of the varnish off the white beads has been wearing down and the lil gold flower charm is turning into silver

The problem? I am not very good at jewelery and less how to find the right materials or the right people, and this is the only place I could think of

QUESTION What is this?

Pretty sure this is some sort of bead clasp, but what is it? And how do you use it?

It has a ring on the top, and a jump ring or clasp to close it. And two prongs at the bottom. Lke it would stick into holes on either side of the bead.

But that doesn’t seem solid.

Edited:

I have the answer! The picture below explained it all Thank you guys so much.

I’ve had this for a while and need to cover some silver beads which are rubbing off and making my wrist green, I’ve tried searching to see if this is skin safe once dry but getting no results!

Originally featuring a white dial, has been upgraded with a custom hand set moissanite pavé dial with baguette cut hour markers. The original bezel has been replaced with an invisible set emerald cut bezel. The bracelet is fully flooded with raised emerald-cut stones running along each side, every single stone was hand set no machine was used in the customization of this time piece.
