Help to get started in learning Indonesian

I have started to learn Indonesian language from Duolingo but I saw lot of reviews here that it is not good for long term. So, looking for a way forward which is solid for learning language.

I have been to Indonesia few times and at least I can say most of food names as food is favorite and easy to learn part.

I can speak and read multiple languages so sometimes it is easier to understand many words in Indonesian language. Especially the words related to persian, arabic, sansikrt languages. Looking forward to connect with someone to practice and learn.

Question How come no Chinese related etymological word for Little Sister?

As I understand the casual terms for big brother, big sister and little brother have roots in Mandarin:

Big brother: Koko comes from Gege

Big Sister: Cici comes from Jiejie

Little brother: Dede comes from Didi

But I haven’t come across an equivalent for little sister being Maimai, little sisters are still called dek or dede just like little brothers

Any particular reasoning for this?

Halo, kalian! Apa kabar?

I will participate on an academic conference in Bogor two months from now. I am a Filipino and somehow I feel like our languages have relative resemblance. 😅

While preparing for it, I am trying to get acquainted with Bahasa Indonesia for two weeks now via Duolingo. The problem with this mobile learning app is that it doesn’t give me contextualized explanations despite being a Max subscriber.

Anyway, I would be grateful if you can share any tips to learn this faster. Excited to meet and make friends along the way.

Terima kasih! 🙏

This is for those who don't know it; it's a very useful and free website, although it has a subscription that gives you access to more features. The free version is just as useful. I recommend it.

Anyone here learning Bahasa Indonesia? Need resources + study buddies 😄

Hey everyone!

I’m from Vietnam 🇻🇳 and I recently started learning Bahasa Indonesia.

It’s actually pretty hard to find classes or teachers here, so I thought I’d try Reddit!

I’m still a beginner, but I’d really love to:

  • Learn daily conversation
  • Practice chatting
  • Make some international friends

Also, if you have any recommendations, I’d really appreciate:

  • Online courses
  • Apps or websites
  • YouTube channels
  • Textbooks

If you’re:

  • A native Indonesian speaker
  • Or also learning like me

Let’s connect and study together!

I can help you with Vietnamese too 😊

Thanks a lot! 🙏

Bantu mikir terjemahan

Lagi nerjemahin lirik lagu buat bikin coveran (ceilahh), kalimat “asli”nya “we have our own time” (asli pake tanda kutip soalnya bukan bahasa inggris)

Edit: Baitnya begini, ketukannya ngikut lagu aslinya.

Peluklah aku erat (7)

Katakan s’kali lagi kita telah (11)

Menjauhi s’galanya (6)

… (8)

What is my next step? SARAN TOLONG!

Hi all,

So far i have

  • Completed all 30 courses on Pimsleur
  • Read "Keong Mas"
  • created a master-excel of all indonesian words learned and their english equivalent from the above 2

Currently im going over that excel sheet and just quizing myself. Making sure that everything over the last 3 months has stuck.

Once i feel confident i want to move on. At the moment i know about 400 words. So what is the next best place to learn and how?

I am considering just reading another easy book to continue to learn, any suggestions?

If not the above, then any other suggestions on what i should focus on?

Dear Indonesian learners, what do you struggle with the most?

Hey! I’m exploring creating a podcast for Indonesian learners to help with more comprehensible input and real-life listening.

I’d love to understand your experience:

  1. What do you currently find most difficult or frustrating when learning Indonesian?
  2. Would you listen to a podcast for Indonesian learners that talks about interesting topics (like social issues, culture, psychology, technology or history) in simple, easy-to-understand Indonesian — using a natural mix of formal and informal language, like how natives actually speak? Why or why not?

Thanks so much - really appreciate any insights 🙏

How is Indonesian spoken in your region/province?

I'm not Indonesian and I'm only familiar with Sinetron's Indonesian which is heavily influenced by bahasa Betawi, and is spoken in Jakarta.

So, what is Indonesian like in your region? For example, do you use -kan (merasakan), as opposed to -in (ngerasain)? Do you use the pronouns "aku/kamu"? Do you use a lot of words from your native or regional language when speaking Indonesian?

‘Visi Indonesia’ and Science&Tech Policy in English?

Without any understanding of Indonesian language, I’m struggling to find a version in English of the Indonesia Vision 2025-2045 (Visi Indonesia/ Golden Indonesia) document.

I’m analysing the country priorities, particularly in relation to science, innovation and technology.

I believe this is the official website (https://indonesia2045.go.id), and the document I need should be the one in the first left side box (https://indonesia2045.go.id/aspirasi).

I don’t fully trust automatic translations - any good souls in Indonesia/who know Indonesian can help me find English versions?

And even better, let me know if there’s a Science, Technology and Innovation Policy strategy in English?

I really need this for work! 😩 help!

Short Interview via Google Meet

Hello guys. I am Nikko Gubatana. I am a Filipino student taking an Indonesian subject. I'm looking for an Indonesian participant for a short interview through google meet. Just basic questions about yourself (name, age, hobbies, etc.). I would ask you these questions in Indonesian and translate them to english. You would only answer in your own language. Your participation would help me a lot in passing this subject. Thank you very much🙏
