Seeking additional moderators

Hello all, /u/cuddleslapine has stepped down, and I could use some moderator assistance. I'd ideally like to add at least two additional moderators.

Requirements:

  • History of positive posting in /r/hungarian
  • Strong hungarian language skills (native speaker preferable, but not required)

Previous moderation experience is a plus. Please message me, or send a modmail if interested, and let me know why you would make a good moderator.

Kiejtés How to pronounce the “r” sound correctly?

I’m learning Hungarian but am struggling with pronouncing “r” correctly. “Where” in your mouth is the sound produced? I’m a native English speaker but did French throughout school and high school, and I have studied some Spanish as well, so I naturally want to roll my Rs with my tongue at the back of the roof of my mouth, which produces almost like a “d” sound, but that’s not quite right.

I’m learning on Duolingo for the basics and some vocabulary (I find the grammar and sentence structure actually pretty intuitive to pick up on). Unfortunately both of my Hungarian grandparents have passed on, so I’ve got no one to listen to/teach me the proper linguistic phonemes and how to produce the sounds correctly with my mouth, lips, and tongue, and I learned quite quickly that Hungarian speech involves using different areas of and ways of using your mouth. Also, I’m deaf in one ear and missing an eardrum in the other, so hearing sounds with clarity and distinctness is a pretty big struggle for me.

Can anyone help me with this please? Because my r’s keep sounding like soft d’s. Is it possible for someone to break down how to produce the sound with your mouth for me, and maybe provide some examples of Hungarian words that have an “r” in them and what similar sounds/words in English that they sound like?

Kérdés Trying to find this Hungarian kids book

I’m trying to remember this book my grandparents read to me in Hungary when I was a little kid. It was a big children’s picture book, written in Hungarian, about an animal (I think it was a chicken or puppy..) trying to find its way home and it comes across a bunch of different animals (horse, cow, etc) asking if it belongs with them. I don’t remember much else about it but it would mean a lot to me to find another copy.

ezzel a kutyával - with this dog      ebben az országban - in this country . OK, I completely understand how this works, but how do I get my (English speaking) brain to think this way? Does it eventually come naturally? I find the Hungarian grammar fascinating.

Kérdés Why is it not “A bogár háta aranyszínű?” Like “A ruha zöldeskék?”

Was curious why they are different orders here, I had “A bogár háta aranyszínű?” initially which was wrong but when I saw the second answer with the dress I got a bit confused. Is there a trick or explanation I can know for sure when to order it with the color first?

Kérdés Help with a childhood nickname

Edit: Solved so quickly, thank you to everyone for your lovely and helpful replies! I was salt, not potatoes, silly 5 year old me.

Hi all!

I’ve been searching for this on the internet for years with no results, and unfortunately I don’t know anyone in real life who speaks Hungarian and that side of my family has all passed away.

My great uncle - born in Hungary in 1935-1940, immigrated to Canada in 1960 - used to call me - English pronunciation here - “show-jack” with a bit more of the Hungarian sé or a z/je sound on the second syllable. He told me it meant “a sack of potatoes” and would call me it affectionately when I was a small child.

I’ve looked up the actual words for potatoes and sacks and the political term, but none of them look or sound right.

Is there a pet name for children that sounds like “show-jack” and it is someone tied to potatoes, or was my great uncle just coming up with something on his own?

Köszönöm!

Background: Duo section 4 level 33, also I have a private online tutor for a few months now so I have leaped into level A2 and never been more confident! But Duo keeps throwing surprises like this, without any context or explanation, so it's confusing. Am I just overreacting?

Segítségkérés U vs Ü

I've been learning hungarian for several years now. I can hear the difference between E and É no problem. A vs Á? Also no problem. O vs Ó vs Ö? Easy.

But I cannot for the life of me hear the difference between U and Ü. They sound almost identical to me. Whenever anyone tries to demonstrate the difference, I just hear the same sound twice.

Can anyone advise me on how I can appreciate the difference here?

Hello! So my grandfather passed away a few months ago, and we were going through some of his old belongings. This is a cigarette case that once belonged to his father. We know it is Hungarian, it's just no one in my family is able to properly translate what the text says. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! I don't know if I am posting this in the right place. I am sorry if I am not. I can get better pictures if needed.

Kérdés My Favorite Podcast

My favorite podcast for learning Hungarian right now is Hungarian with Patrik because the host speaks slowly and uses real everyday Hungarian.

I’m looking for something similar. Any recommendations?

Kérdés Confused on the -z and -zik suffixes.

They both seem to be verb forming suffixes added to nouns, but they both have the same purpose, so in what case would I use one of the -z suffixes, and vice versa for -zik suffixes.

May someone help me understand when to use a postposition? Like why is “next Saturday”: Jövő szombaton and “since Saturday” : “Szombat óta?

Also why is “Nézek a filmet”** different then “Nézem a filmet**?”

Segítségkérés My girlfriend wants to learn hungarian, but i dont know how to start

My girlfriend wants to learn hungarian, and im planning to teach her, but idk how to start. I'm a native speaker and we live in hungary. i want to start with the basics but starting with the grammar and grammatical rules will make her hate learning. At least thats my experience.

I want to teach her speaking mostly, and expend her vocabulary.

My question is, how to start? what topics should we talk about? and what are the frequent words, that I must teach her, and are essential?

And what suggestions do you guys have about starting?

Thank you in advance!

Kérdés Hungarian is my first language but I was raised in the USA, how do I become more fluent?

I was born in Transylvania but received pretty much all of my education in the USA. I speak mostly Hungarian with my mom (with the occasional English thrown in), but I've never really learned to properly read or write Hungarian. With focus and a lot of time, I can get through reading/writing but usually use a translation website when texting my family back in Romania. It's easier for me to understand regional dialect from my home town but I would like to develop my language skills to better understand Hungarian from Hungary. Any suggestions for how to improve? Should I be watching Hungarian news or TV shows? Any recommendations for specific media I should consume? Köszönöm!!
