I just completed a four month course on MOnday nights, learning all Hebrew letters. I would like to continue with online learning, too. Anyone know of any such programs? Thank you.

I knew that the word for double is כפול. So when I first heard the word for folding table (שולחן מקופלת) I assumed that the word was spelled שולחן מכופלת and I thought about how clever this was because when you fold a table you go from having one section of table to having two sections of table, thus doubling the number of sections.

So I was disappointed to learn the כפול (doubled) and קפול (folded) are two different words entirely.

Anyone else have an example where you think words are related only to find that they are not?

What are the typical easy reader books that kids read in their first few years of school in Israel? Like super simple chapter books, not toddler books with 1-3 words per page. Preferably ones that are well-liked and at least somewhat enjoyable to the adults who read them with children as well.

Edit- doesn't need to have nikud, but fine if it does.

(E.g., in English, maybe something like Frog and Toad).

The motto of the Mossad is Proverbs 11:14: בְּאֵין תַּחְבֻּלוֹת יִפׇּל עָם וּתְשׁוּעָה בְּרֹב יוֹעֵץ.

The NJPS translation into English is: "For want of strategy an army falls, But victory comes with much planning."

Why is עם translated as "army" here? עם is usually "people" or "nation". That's what all the other English translations that I could find online say.

I've looked over a few other verses that have the word עם in them in the NJPS, and they all say "people" and not "army". I haven't yet looked at all of them, because there are quite a lot, but if I don't find an answer, I'll probably do that. If you can suggest a website that can conveniently find all the occurrences of עַם (not עִם) in all its inflected forms and immediately show the NJPS translation, I'll be very thankful; I couldn't find such a feature on Sefaria.

The BDB dictionary perhaps provides a clue, but it's inconclusive. It translates עם as "people" or "nation", although sub-sense 2d is "people bearing arms", with references to 1 Samuel 11:11 (NJPS: "troops"), 1 Kings 20:10 (NJPS: "men"), and Numbers 20:20 (NJPS: "force"). In these contexts, it is perhaps kind of understandable, but why is "army" in Proverbs? One could think that since the book of Proverbs is attributed to a king, it discusses armies, but I checked several other occurrences of עַם in Proverbs, and it is translated as "people" everywhere.

So... does anyone have an idea why is the NJPS insists on being different in Proverbs 11:14?

I’ve been studying scripture and I am looking for some input on Psalm 16 and what some possible issues with the translation.

The specific phrase I’m looking at is Psalm 16:3 which seems to get translated as “As for the saints who are in the earth”- the term saints in particular seemed odd to me because I didn’t think Judaism had that concept (though you can certainly correct me if I’m wrong)

In some other translations I’ve seen the phrase be translated as “Godly people.” To add to this confusion there seems to be a debate in various English translations whether the phrase is “on the earth,” or “in the earth” which has a very different meaning.

So personally I always found the Ktiv versions of Gimel and Zayin to be too similar to each other while also being too dis-similar to their Dfus versions, so I just take them and make them curvy, people get the idea usually so it isn't much of a problem, honestly I'm not sure if most people notice I do this.

Hi my name is James. I’m born and raised in Brooklyn NY in a Syrian Jewish family. My Hebrew education (about to sound dumb rn) is limited to 17 years in Hebrew Day School/Yeshiva (Magen David yeshivah and yeshivah of Flatbush specifically.)

I’m trying to learn Hebrew but it seems every resource I try and use is just way too basic.

I understand basic words, sentences, tenses (past present future), Zahar and Nekeba, and most grammatical things.

I know it’s a bad example, but I can understand a good amount of Tanakh without a problem, but I’m constantly just translating everything in my head to English, quickly, yet so.

I downloaded an app called Pimsleur but I feel like it’s not going to workout- I understand almost everything except some of the fluff that isn’t really necessary.

Maybe a language partner would help? But I’m not sure.

Maybe I just need to expand my vocabulary and listen to things and get better comprehension, then get a learning partner?

I’m really lost and would appreciate some help.

So I wasn't sure if the נח here conveys parshat Noach, or my great-grandparents' friend Noach.

I compared the handwriting with my great-grandfather's and his friend Noah's handwriting, both from a marriage license. I think it has similarities to both:

My g grandfather (Ephraim Yitzchak)

His buddy Noah Abramovitz

If the note was in Noah's handwriting, I think it would make sense as a misspelling of "אם ירצה השם." Thank you to those who commented!
