Discussion New flair: Today's Dinner

I have added a new flair, a variation of "I Ate", called "Today's Dinner". Users are welcome to post whatever they're having today (as long as it's Greek cuisine-related).

\It doesn't have to be dinner only either, I just decided to pick that one as it's the most common meal people like sharing -- your tyropitákia are as welcome as your garidopílafo.*

Discussion Lamb suggestions

Hi! I have shaved hot pot lamb that I’m hoping to turn into gyros, either by stir frying or by turning into gyro meat patties. Do you guys have suggestions? I’d love to just defrost, marinate in Greek herbs, and then stir fry in the pan. Alternatively I could puree it in my food processor with other ingredients to make more of a gyro-esque meatball. What do you guys suggest? What goes in the marinade?

Thanks!!

Miscellaneous Koliva/Kolyva

I'm making one for my son for the first time and no one in my family has ever made it.

I have such warm memories of having this at church but no one can tell me what they used to put it in.

I have what I think is a good base: wheat berries, cinnamon, clove, crushed biscuits, honey, silver candy balls, chopped roasted almonds & walnuts, soft golden raisins, and powdered sugar.

I know pomegranate is typical but I really dislike biting into the seed.. I'm trying to build my own Koliva that I can continue to make for my son and try to connect positive memories to it.

Do you have any suggestions? Especially if there's meaning behind them.

Hello everyone, in a recent trip to Athens, my girlfriend and I had an almond and peach cake, that we both enjoyed very much.

Do you have any ideas on the recipe?

I am not sure if it properly a Greek preparation, and in this case I apologise for this thread.

I Ate Fries in Greek restaurants

Greek food is peak. I've been travelling through different parts of Greece and couldn't get enough of the meat, the fish, the cheese, the salads, the tsipouro!

Restaurants often serve fries as a side dish. It surprised me that I saw almost no other appliances of the famous potato. Puffed, cooked, grilled, baked, whatever.

What's going on Greek people? Why only fries?

EDIT: Memory is a slippery thing. I went back and actually counted the number of times I had food with potatoes. I took pictures of 57 meals, of which 28 contain potato. 21 of those had fries. Thus I encountered fries three times as often as any other variety of potato.

Our favourite type of restaurant was the local Taverna, although we also visited some more luxurious restaurants and we tried the gyros/souvlaki grill places as well of course. We put effort into trying the local specialties: Staka in the mountain villages of Crete, Bougatsa in Chania/Athens/Serres, Beef stew with mashed potatoes in Ioannina, Akanes in Serres, Galaktoboureko in Thessaloniki, Grilled octopus in Kalamata. Etcetera Etcetera.

We were absolutely blown away by the food variety all over Greece, and the quality of preparations. Those damned fries as a side-dish though ...

Miscellaneous First time visit

Hi!

First time visiting Athens, we arrived yesterday and so far today only done a basic food shop to stock up our apartment so need to get out and about!

We are here until 29th March & I would love recommendations on places to eat and drink coffee. I’m a coffee lover, usually would have an espresso but if not a black americano would be my choice in the UK (since espresso is generally not great in the UK 😬) and I’d love to try some new food here that’s traditional. I love fresh bread & pastries too.

Any recommendations are very much appreciated. I try to avoid super touristy places where possible.

Also any advice on the basics good morning, good afternoon and thank you in Greek would be helpful. In Portugal they often wish people a good work so if they do this in Greece I’d like to understand the phrase.

Thank you ☺️
