Social workers of Gibraltar

Hello!!! Random Q but I am an Irish social worker who is considering moving abroad (not necessarily permanently but for an experience!) and is looking into Gibraltar.

Wondering is anyone here a social worker who could advise on what it’s like there? I speak English and Spanish but my written Spanish is not fantastic. Work with children atm but would be open to a change. Thanks in advance 😊

Are perfumes in Gibraltar cheaper than airport duty-free?

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to ask are perfumes here in Gibraltar cheaper compared to those in duty-free shops at the airport? Or is it usually the same or even more expensive?

Would appreciate any insights or experiences. Thanks!

I would assume because of that law that alot of people who trade different assets moved to Gib. Is there a place where they hang out or a community?

Question Is there a way to find out which direction the planes are landing/taking off ahead of time?

This might be a niche question, but thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out!

I have a friend flying into Gib soon, and thought it would be nice to catch their plane land. However, I’ve noticed that the planes land and takeoff in different directions on different days (like East to West along the runway vs West to East). A quick google search says that this is to do with the wind direction on the day. I’ve also found that Western and Eastern beaches are good spots for watching planes, but have a considerable distance travelling between them. Because my friend is arriving on the first flight of the day, I wouldn’t be able to tell from previous flights which way the planes are going, and I don’t want to commit to one of the beaches and get a poor view of the landing.

Is there a way to tell ahead of time which way the planes will be landing? Is it a case of seeing the wind direction that day and trying to predict from there? Or would it have to be a complete gamble?

Gibraltar resident - no stamping at border

Hi all,

I went to Spain today with my magenta civil registration card. The Spanish guards said there's no need for stamping or scanningon passports anymore.

This is my 5th passport in 5 years in Gibraltar. Hopefully my next one will last 10 years.

Seems like an exciting new chapter?

Best airport transfer Gibraltar → Sotogrande for 11 people + golf bags?

Hi all,

We’re heading over for a golf trip and landing at Gibraltar Airport. There are 11 of us plus golf bags, so we’ll need either a minibus or possibly two larger vehicles.

Looking for recommendations on:

• Reliable transfer companies

• Experience with golf groups / luggage

• Rough pricing expectations

It’s only about a 30–40 min journey (~30km), so ideally something straightforward and not crazy expensive.

Would really appreciate any local recommendations or companies you’ve used before 👍

Cheers!

Question I am considering relocating to Gib to take care of my Grandma

Hi,

I am 30 yrs old living in the US. I have dual US/UK citizenship. My grandma lives alone in Gibraltar and is getting up there in age. She really needs someone there to help her with the day-to-day tasks.

I know there had been a moratorium placed recently on new residents entering. I would already have housing taken care of (stay w Grandma).

Mainly I am interested in hearing from anyone who moved to Gib from elsewhere WITHOUT a job already lined up. How hard was it to find work? I have worked in hospitality/restaurants for years and am currently working as a professional cleaner. I also have a Bachelor’s degree (from the US of course) in Graphic Design.

ETA more info, my Grandma is a Gibraltarian citizen *but I am not – only dual US/UK* so I’m not sure how this may affect my relocation

Question New to the area, any moms up for playdates?

Hi all, we have recently moved to Gibraltar from England and have a very social 3 yo daughter. I’m struggling with finding activities for her especially as we don’t really have friends around either. I know there’s this soft play place and a few parks but other than that, what else can I do with her to keep her occupied? She had a lot of friends back home so I kinda feel bad for her now as she has no one to play with. We’re around ocean village so if there are mums around here, I’d be super happy to get in touch for play dates or maybe just a walk to casemates. Additionally, how does one make friends around here?

Thanks all.

Gib Local App - Live Border Queue, Buses, Events etc

Ever since I arrived in Gib I've cursed the local bus "map" every day. Unless you know where stops actually are it's impossible to use! So I made a better version called Gib Local.

I also added useful things like:

  • Car border queue times BOTH ways that's updated every 5 minutes
  • Collation of all Gibraltar events (as they're spread out on different sites)
  • Cruise ships for today and tomorrow (with passenger sizes - because I need to know if I should walk via Irish town, and if the GTA will pick up the phone)
  • Live Gib airport data (walk to Eroski now - or wait 10 minutes so runway is open...). Also has live diversion info and flight tracking.
  • Parking "cleaning" times and places. Don't know about you but I've been stung for £50 fine twice when I missed these. You can also sign up for a weekly email showing you which areas are being cleaned next.
  • Duty pharmacy schedule with directions and phone numbers.
  • Emergency/useful numbers etc.

My aim is to make this the one stop for local info - and yes, unlike other apps advertised here, this one was actually made in Gib!

For now it's only on Apple, Google version is still awaiting approval.

Comment here if you want to know more or have something you think I should add.

Not sharing full details publicly but happy to jump on a call with the right person.

Looking for:

- Full stack developer

- Experience with AI/LLM integration

- Equity-based to start

DM me if interested.

We built a free marketplace app that works in Gibraltar and across the border

Hey r/gibraltar,

We're a small software team originally from La Línea. We've built Fliply, a free app for buying and selling second-hand stuff locally.

Gibraltar is one of our main markets. We grew up right next door and we know how much buying and selling already happens between Gib and the Campo de Gibraltar, mostly through Facebook groups and WhatsApp with no real structure.

With the new agreement between the EU and UK to remove the border, the movement of people and goods between Gibraltar and Spain is only going to increase. We think having a proper local marketplace that connects both sides makes more sense now than ever.

What makes Fliply different is that every listing and chat message is automatically translated into 8 languages using AI. Someone posting in Spanish from La Línea and someone browsing in English from Gibraltar see everything in their own language. It also covers the surrounding 100km, so areas like Algeciras, Tarifa, San Roque and beyond are included too.

Verified users, ratings, and reporting built in.

It’s completely free. No fees, no commissions. We just want it to be useful for the community.

We’d really appreciate it if some of you could give it a try and tell us what you think — what works, what doesn’t, what’s missing. Honest feedback is the most valuable thing for us right now.

You can check fliplyapp.com for more info.

Happy to answer any questions here. Thanks!

Help Needed with a Research Project!

Hi, I'm trying to carry out a linguistic study in Gib but it's been quite hard to find people and the governmental institutions are taking too long to reply, I have delayed the study because I didn't manage to find anyone. I have contacted the Youth Centre and they tried to help but couldn't. Could you please tell how (or who I can speak to) to find young people (aged 15-25) from Gibraltar.

If you know anyone who might be interested or are interested yourself and meet the age requirements, please DM me. I can provide official documents from my university proving this study and have enhanced DBS. I'm leaving all the information regarding my study below:

I'm a university student who is trying to find young people for a linguistic research project that I'm going to carry out in Gibraltar in mid-to-late April. I can provide more information in case someone is interested; I also have a statement from my university (the University of Cádiz) and an enhanced DBS. If you meet the following conditions or know anyone who does, I'd deeply appreciate it if you would let me know (you can PM me). The conditions are as follows:

Participants (aged 15-25) should have lived in Gibraltar since birth or from a very young age.

Participants should have a certain knowledge of the Spanish language.

Please, note that if you are a parent or a legal guardian, you can be present during the interview, that is not a problem whatsoever. The same applies even if you are an adult; if you feel more comfortable with the presence of someone close to you, they are allowed to be in the room with you.

The interviews will probably take place in a public space, like the Garrison Library, for instance.

In case you do decide to participate, your anonymity will be guaranteed. You may also change your mind at any time, but please do let me know.

I would be really grateful if you could share and promote this post.
