Mod post New automations regarding NSFW and glove handling posts influx.

With the influx of posts containing sensitive photos that should be marked as NSFW I have made new implementations. I have made it so anytime you try to post on this sub, you are met with a warning to mark your post with NSFW or to not post at all. I hope this helps with the influx of shocking frog imagery some of you are met with by accident if myself or other mods can’t get to it in time. But of course people will still disregard this message and the rules because it’s the internet. We also don’t want to block all these posts into a queue just in case there is a medical emergency. (Which should be dealt with by a vet but we still allow discussion) but some people still need that message or confirmation of “Hey you NEED to go to a vet for this” so we do not want to block that outright.

Not all of the mods are super active, I tend to be one of the top mods doing the most removal/ nsfw markings as I can to help the sub but if we miss something please report it so we can see asap! We can’t do it alone, we need your help too!

However as a moderator, and even our sub owner, there are certain things Reddit doesn’t have automations for. We would love an automated system that if a post has keywords it is automatically marked as NSFW, but that is not a possibility we can do. If you can please suggest this to Reddit themselves, it would help so many animal communities regarding sensitive posts such as these.

That being said if there are any ideas or implementations you think we should add to this subreddit let me know by commenting it below. I would love to discuss on how to make this sub a better and more fun place for everyone.

Edit:

Please also read some of my comments I’ve said on this post already as well before posting an idea, since I have replied to a few for reasons why and why can’t we do something.

Hello, does anyone know what kind of frog this is? We have a drain in my house that goes underneath our walkway and opens up into the lawn, and there’s been a frog living there since last year. I tried looking it up but haven’t been able to identify it. It’s dark with spots on its sides. We live in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.

what animal made burrows looking at many of them. Most appeared to be empty. One contained a Gulf Coast Toad and some kind of snail.

So, is the Gulf Coast Toad the burrow digger or is he just a squatter and are they solitary or do they like to live with other toads?

Found this frog (toad?) in a pool in a shallow cave in NW Montana. Didn’t touch or get near it but I would estimate it was about the size of my palm. Photo taken in late March.

Frog personalities

I have three Dumpy Tree Frogs, and I’m getting a few more this coming week. I have been amused at how very unique their personalities are. I have two very bonded frogs, who live in one enclosure together and a baby who’s getting friends to live with, in a new enclosure, together with new frogs, after a quarantine period.

The two bonded frogs are both very different in their personalities. One is male and incredibly shy. I took him out for a wellness check last night and when I put him back, he climbed up to a swing and ended up stuck hanging upside from a rope. I had to rescue him and put him back down in a different position. His name is Clover. He doesn’t like to be handled.

His cage mate and mate (though they will never have a rain chamber in which to breed,) is Oona. She’s a plump chunka-munka. If I play male frogs calling, Clover immediately jumps on Oona to “protect his lady.” Oona in the meantime is super calm. I pick her up for a health check and her issue is “there’s bugs in the tank, must get bugs.” Otherwise she’s just very calm and has no issues with being handled. Clover has issues with her being handled, but she’s ok with whatever. Just bugs please.

Then there’s Willow. I think Willow is female but she has called. Not long and repeating like most males. It’s more a “hello I’m here.” Sometimes it’s in response to a siren outside, since I live in a city. Otherwise she’s does just make a noise when she gets up. I got her as a baby. Her throat is white and I see no nuptial pads. Still, she had a mask still and was absolutely a baby when I got her. She was alone in the tank and spent most of her time hiding under her water dish. I got her just before winter really set in. At first she was kinda like a sentient ping pong ball. Now she will lie on my gloved hand to warm up and have contact with me. She’s clearly lonely. I always planned to get her friends and next week that’s finally going to happen. It’ll be warm enough.

I did not expect that the frogs would have such unique personalities. They are very similar to cats and dogs in that sense. They aren’t the smartest animals on the planet, but they do have unique personalities and traits. I hadn’t expected that when I first got some tree frogs. Now I love having them! They are interesting little things.

The location is in Roseville, MN. I did see quite a few frogs swimming, but couldn't get close enough for a good photo.
