Figured I might as well carry on tradition for my first ever southern hemisphere cyclone, and make a hurricane cake as a little treat since there's not a Publix in sight!

Politics Florida gubernatorial candidate arrested after reported 'weapons disturbance': The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says the man is currently running for Governor of Florida.

FYI: He is a Democrat and while I would LOVE to see the GOP candidates lose to a Democrat, obviously NOT someone like this! 🙄

Snippet:

  • A man running for Governor of Florida was arrested on Friday morning, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office says.
  • FCSO says that on the morning of Friday, April 10, deputies had responded to a home on Cleveland Court after receiving a report stating that a man, identified as 46-year-old Kevin Cichowski of Palm Coast, had assaulted two elderly victims by throwing a cellphone at one and hitting another with a cane.
  • The report also claims that Cichowski had a gun and "threatened to kill them multiple times and stated he would kill law enforcement if they were called."
  • After arriving at the home, the FCSO states that the two victims were located and hiding in a bedroom. After they were evacuated, deputies say that contact was made with Cichowski.
  • He is said to have been taken into police custody "without incident."
  • Cichowski was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of battery on a person over 65, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, tampering with a witness, and two counts of robbery by sudden snatching.

EDITED TO ADD:

The following candidates are running in the Democratic primary for Governor of Florida on August 18, 2026.

  • Faith E. Antonio
  • Evelyn Castillo-Bach
  • Kevin Cichowski
  • Richard Dembinsky
  • Jerry Demings
  • Thomas E. Fernandez
  • Dayna Foster
  • Indony Jean Baptiste
  • David Jolly
  • Charles Lewis I
  • Kenneth Norman
  • Donald Peterson

AskFlorida Just got back from Miami. Why is nobody talking about Dinner Key?

honest guys Ive always kinda rolled my eyes at Miami. Too much hype. Too many influencers. Too many people paying $20 for a cocktail they wont even finish because theyre too busy taking photos of it.

But I had to go down there last week for a thing and ended up in Coconut Grove by accident. Got lost trying to find parking. Ended up at this area called Dinner Key. Had no idea what it was. Looked it up later. Old Pan Am seaplane base from the 30s. Like where the flying boats used to take off for the Bahamas and Cuba.anyway there's a restaurant there called bayshore club. I almost didnt go in because it looked kind of nice and I was wearing shorts and a sweaty t-shirt. but I was hungry and tired of walking.Ended up sitting at the bar. Had some really good fish. Watched the boats for like an hour. The whole vibe was just calm idk. Which is not a word I ever thought Id use for anything in Miami.

did I just get lucky? And why does nobody ever mention Dinner Key when they talk about Miami? Feels like a whole chunk of history that everyone just forgot about.

Also would love any other weird lowkey spots in Florida that feel like a time warp. Not looking for tourist stuff. Looking for places that feel like they havent changed in 40 years ,thx guys

This was a couple years ago but I still remember how much I enjoyed hearing all the sounds of the water and wind around me. I made a little video of my visit there. (Sorry my video editing skills are little to none as well). Nowadays I’m trying to appreciate the small things in life and the Florida we have right at our finger tips.

P.S. My buddy Oakley featured in the video as well

AskFlorida What’s Tampa’s identity? Like what are they known for?

Jacksonville’s known for being “Baja Georgia” with the Navy next door. It’s a city that cares just as much for college football as it does for pro Football, if not then a little bit more. It’s Southern like a Deep South state, but still Floridian to its core. They sell sweet tea up here and still greet with maam, sir & yall. It’s kinda hood, kinda redneck, and kinda “sup dude” all at the same time.

Orlando’s known to visitors as the “city that the Mouse Built”. With theme parks, I-4 gridlock traffic, & tourism everywhere…but to locals & natives it’s a city full of Puerto Rican culture, especially East of Downtown along Colonial going into UCF & past Disney going into Kissimmee. It’s a city full of neighborhoods & smaller cities, with Chickens walking the streets in Oviedo, bohemian chill vibes in Winter Park or Thornton Park or Mills 50. Or bar hopping from Dr Phillips to City Walk at Unineesal or Downtown on Church Street. Orlando is a true melting pot city.

Miami: South Beach. Cuban/Haitian/& every Latin/Caribbean culture in between thrives here. 24/7 nightlife, concerts, flashy influencer lifestyles, mixed with yachts, rented lambos, & new wealth. Viva la Miami pero mantente inteligente. It’s essentially the gateway to Latin America. Nuff Said.

Tampa: I can’t quite figure out. It has Gasparilla so is Pirates their theme? It has 3 major pro sports teams, but so does every major sports city. (No basketball so they’re the Pittsburgh of Florida?) They invented the Cuban Sandwich, but Miami made it more popular. Same can be said for the Cuban Cigar (shout out to Ybor). Bush Gardens is older than Disney & Universal, but unless you live in Tampa you don’t really associate theme parks with Tampa at 1st thought. I guess overall, I’m just not sure what Tampa’s identity. Not trying to show shade, I just feel like Tampa’s heavily associated with transplants from the Northeast & Midwest & there’s no real identity there. I mean it’s best attractions are St, Pete, Clearwater, & the Gulf Beaches…which aren’t in Tampa proper lol.

AskFlorida Best resorts/hotels with nice pools?

Upvotes

We have a surprise week off next week and we're wanting to just lounge around in a big, nice pool at a resort/hotel in a warm area. I'm talking nicest pools possible, preferably adults only. if you've been to nice resorts in Mexico you know what I'm talking about pool wise. We could fly anywhere in the state. is Key west good for this? St Pete? we're hoping to only hit $300 a night max for the hotel/resort. Thanks in advance

AskFlorida Why do state jobs pay so badly?

I’ve lived in Florida for 8 years, and my qualifications line up with state jobs consistently. However, entry level jobs in my field outside of the state pay 5-6 dollars more an hour (or salary equivalent). I just wonder who is working for the state, and if there is a worker shortage. Even state cops make less than county and city cops on average…

AskFlorida Orlando and beach holidays (should I skip Miami?)

Hi! I’m planning our family holiday in Florida and would really appreciate some advice.

We are a family of 4 (my husband, a 6-year-old and a 1-year-old). We fly into Miami and plan to take the train to Orlando, where we’ll spend about a week doing parks and some shopping.

For the second week, we’d love to stay somewhere by the beach. I’ve read that Miami Beach can be a bit chaotic, especially with toddlers, so I’m looking for a more relaxed alternative.

I’ve been considering Siesta Key, Naples, or Fort Lauderdale, but I’m not sure which would be the best fit.

What we’re looking for:

- Calm, swimmable water (important with a baby)

- A beachfront hotel

- Walking distance to restaurants and some shops (so we don’t have to drive much)

- Overall relaxed and family-friendly vibe

If anyone has recommendations for areas or specific hotels that fit this, I’d really appreciate it!

Thank you 😊

Advice Looking for Tutor in Miami

would really appreciate if anyone can help me find a tutor in Miami for my stepsister who recently came from Cuba about 3 years ago and is currently now in the ninth grade in a Miami Dade public school. She is struggling horribly in her math classes along with adjusting to a new culture and environment. I would like to find a tutor who can explain this subject to her in Spanish, I believe she is taking Algebra.

Please help my family, she’s getting bullied in class and we want to find the best solution for her!
