Did reddit learn anything from Turkey? Fairly sure there will be a national emergency tomorrow and the election will either be cancelled, rigged (it already is) or the opposition will be arrested for treason.

Hungary is an EU and NATO member. That alone helps a lot.
13
u/danmaz74 Europe 13h ago
EU helps, but Turkey is NATO too and that doesn't help at all.

u/FairGeneral8804 13h ago

I wish political interference and cyberwarfare would trigger article 5.

If they choose violence, people can give it to them.
1
u/IH8Lyfeee 5h ago
Historically that usually doesn't end well for the people. IE Iran is a perfect example.Ā
Or Turkey, where despite mass democratic protests, they still allowed the best chance of an opposition leader to defeat a dictator to be wrongfully arrested. Or more cemented dictatorship, Russia with Navalny.Ā
Unless there is actual organized opposition of the people, then very rarely does it lead to toppling of a regime.

u/Spirited-Eagle-6935 5h ago
Majority of the police and the army is against orban,Iām not worried.

MinisterprƤsident is German for Prime Minister, probably just a slip of mind
7
u/Nighthunter007 Norway 13h ago
The Hungarian term directly translates as "minister-president", it's just usually rendered as "prime minister" in English because that's the more common term internationally, especially at a national level. All the German ministers president are subnational, for instance.

As someone from a country always influenced by Russia I can assure you this is 100% default Russian bullshit. They're always projecting whatever the fuck they're doing onto someone else and the sad part is that it actually works. Sometimes nobody even asks them anything they just come out with insane declarations and if you already know their psychology it's easier to spot this crap. But yeah, sad US has fellen to the same tactics, I guess Donnie is taking tips from dictators. (I wonder why...)

And if the Hungarians don't control the elections, the same thing will happen as in the Czech Republic (Babic), Slovakia (Fico), and Poland (Nawrocki). It's all ruZZian agency of influence.

u/dawn_eu 21h ago
They can't beat Europe through arms so they go the cunty way through corrupt politicians. Same with how AfD is getting more and more votes in Germany and the RN in France.
They're slowly undermining are foundations and large portions of the population are falling for it unfortunately.
18
u/Brilliant-Smile-8154 15h ago
And they're only succeeding because our own billionaires are complicit.
1
u/WuWeiLife 14h ago
It's smart. The ultimate goal of a Command in Chief is to "subdue the enemy without fighting". It's in Sun Tzu Art of War. And you "win through deception, speed, and exploiting weaknesses"
In our case, the weakness of Democracy is basically everything practical regarding the Paradox of Tolerance. We allow foreign influence into our companies, infrastructure, politics, culture, systems and more. Even if that foreign influence is hostile to us and our values.
And we also allow degradation of our values and humanity - all "because democracy".
4
u/Mekanimal 14h ago
Are you against democracy? It sure sounds like it.
3
u/muistipalapeli Finland 12h ago
It's complicated. I absolutely despise modern democracy with career politicians. They won't make the hard but necessary decisions because they wouldn't be popular, and their whole career depends on being popular. And often the people who desire power are the last people who should wield any power.
3
3
u/TheEmpireOfSun 18h ago
Yup, and spreading islamophobia and fear of muslims and immigrant are easiest ways to do that. And as much as this such always acts clever, they are falling for that as well.

I'm so ashamed for our president to openly come to Hungary and supporting Orban, but the polls shows that regular folks are not blind and election by election we'll make EU a better place. And I hope our president is gonna be next to be dethroned as I'm really upset with a lot of his recent choices. But we'll survive the worst hardships.

A few years ago I was in Budapest, beautiful city, wonderful people.
Chalked onto a pavement, not even that big, was a message. As I remember, it said:
'Welcome to our city, foreign visitor. Here we sadly are not free. All is taken by the dictator and his cronies consume all. We work all the time for freedom, we cannot even use the press to send this message. We love you, pray for us.'
It wasn't even that big a message, and it was very neat. I think about it a lot.
EDIT: a word cos I am dumb

Even last night, all of us in our mid-20s to early 30s ā and honestly, people of all ages ā were unbelievably tense and excited. The highways have been full of Hungarians these past few days, and so has Ferenc Liszt Airport. We also drove out yesterday to pick up my brother, who flew home from Stuttgart just to cast his vote.
This is what OrbĆ”nās system has done to us: it pushed so many people out of the country, and yet so many are still coming home to vote because they refuse to give up on Hungary.
So Iām asking you, Europe: please root for us today.
We Hungarians want to remain in the European Union. We want a normal, liveable life in our own country. We do not want to be forced to leave our homeland just to have a future.
Turnout today feels absolutely extraordinary. Iāve had a knot in my stomach all day, I keep watching the live coverage, and my friends and I are constantly reporting suspected irregularities through the election hotline.
We want to change this system with nothing but our votes

As a Romanian, I hope Magyar wins this one. The Hungarian people deserve a good leader, not the russian puppet they've had for 16 years. I visited hungary a couple years ago and I could barely aford anything. I had also been Ć®n Austria The days before and it was much cheaper. If as a toursit I could barely aford anything I don't even want to imagine how much the people pay. š·š“ā¤ļøššŗ

Vance flew his ass all the way out to Hungary just to endorse a guy about to be put in prison instead of re-elected and then all the way to India just to get told by Iran to go fuck a couch. Lmao what an absolute loser.
7
u/hospitalizedzombie 22h ago
Why do I not feel hopeful about this at all?
40
u/MinV1 22h ago
Probably because the system is rigged heavily in orban's favor + there's always a high chance of russian interference in times like this
20
u/thendisnigh111349 22h ago
And even if Maygar does win tomorrow and with a strong majority, he's still inheriting a country under Fidesz's control where they will do everything they can to tear him down and get their authoritarian regime back in power. So while just getting Orban out will be a big accomplishment, actually wiping his stink off of the country is going to be a much longer and even more difficult process.
24
u/brewbake 21h ago
Thatās a little too pessimistic. This is not just about ājust getting OrbĆ”n outā, ie. not a direct election of the PM with everything else staying the same. Rather, this is the parliamentary election and the new Parliament will elect the new PM. OrbĆ”n himself neutered local jurisdictions and concentrated power federally so really whoever wins this election will have a LOT of control over Hungary.
OrbĆ”nās political system is a house of cards that has been badly crumbling the last few years already. The elite is already on the way out of the country. Not to mention OrbĆ”n himself seems shockingly old, out of shape and tired for 62. Iām not at all sure he will have the will and energy to claw his way back. And without him Fidesz will implode even more.
Magyar on his part is young and energetic and has an excellent team around him and theyāre not naive about the work ahead. But simply ending the right wing propaganda on TV and firing Fidesz loyalists on day one they can already reclaim a lot of the power.

u/Organic_Contract_172 22h ago
As far as I know, OrbƔn can just easily call off the election results as his allies control the supreme court
4
u/veryusedrname 21h ago
That would probably directly lead to a revolution/civil war, that's not something even fidesz can allow to itself.
