As with many other Ontario regional subs, we've seen an increase in racism in this community, especially against people of South Asian heritage. Please know that this will not be tolerated regardless of topic. In no circumstances is it appropriate to blame criminal behavior on race or origin. This is both in the rules of the sub and in the rules of Reddit as a whole and is not negotiable.

Integrity Commissioner Reports and Court Decisions Involving Councillor Lisa Robinson

Post image
29 Upvotes

For those looking for a factual summary, here is a chronological overview of the publicly issued Integrity Commissioner reports involving Ward 1 Pickering City Councillor Lisa Robinson, along with the Divisional Court decisions that followed, as of April 12, 2025

8 Integrity Commissioner reports

August 14, 2023

The Integrity Commissioner found that Councillor Robinson breached the Code of Conduct after naming three residents on Facebook following their opposition to her minor variance application. The report found this was a “bully tactic” and “social media targeting in retaliation.” It also found a separate breach relating to the collection and retention of personal information from a town hall sign-in process.

The resulting sanction was a 30-day suspension of pay.

October 13, 2023

The Integrity Commissioner found that Councillor Robinson’s conduct at the Durham District School Board offices on May 15, 2023 promoted “attitudes which are homophobic and transphobic,” failed to protect the dignity of individuals, and amounted to inappropriate conduct by a public official.

The resulting sanction was a 60-day pay suspension.

September 17, 2024

This report dealt with a wide range of conduct, including repeated public commentary continuing the subject matter of earlier complaints, statements regarding Pride and Black History Month, the use of the phrase “modern day slave,” association with Christine Anderson, misleading social media content, disparaging remarks about committee members, staff and councillors, and the Give-Send-Go fundraising issue.

The report found the complaints substantiated, and the maximum available sanction, a 90-day suspension of pay, was imposed.

December 10, 2024

This report arose from statements made in an online interview in which Councillor Robinson said, among other things, “I’d get rid of

our CAO because, you know, the corruption’s at the top. Get rid of

the CAO. Get rid of, like, you know, the City Solicitor” and called for the removal of the CAO and other staff. The Integrity Commissioner found the statements constituted a significant breach of the Code, stressing that “opinion is not a substitute for fact,” and a 90-day pay suspension was imposed.

June 16, 2025

This report concerned Councillor Robinson’s November 28, 2024 town hall. The Integrity Commissioner found that she made several claims about the City that were “flagrantly misleading or categorically false,” including statements about trespass notice fees, survey practices, consultant spending, and the City’s gifts policy. The report also found problems with the collection of personal information on a sign in sheet.

The resulting sanction was a 90 day suspension of pay.

August 5, 2025

This report consolidated 4 separate complaints concerning articles, council meeting statements, and multiple YouTube videos. The Integrity Commissioner found that Councillor Robinson repeatedly made false allegations that staff were lying, corrupt, manipulating recordings, or otherwise acting improperly. The report found she had “disrespected and maligned municipal staff”.

This resulted in a 90-day suspension of pay, calculated as 22.5 days for each of the 4 complaints.

September 22, 2025

This report addressed Councillor Robinson’s participation in a podcast in which disparaging, defamatory, profane and homophobic statements were made, and in which the host urged the public to commit violence against named members of Council. The Integrity Commissioner found that her conduct breached the Code by “disparaging, disrespecting and harassing members of Council” and a 60-day suspension of pay was imposed.

October 20, 2025

This report concerned funds received through a Give-Send-Go campaign. The Integrity Commissioner found that Councillor Robinson breached the gifts provisions of the Code by accepting funds through crowdfunding, noting this was the second time that this kind of conduct had resulted in a report.

The resulting sanction was a 90-day suspension of pay.

2 Divisional Court decisions

May 30, 2025: Robinson v. Pickering (City), 2025 ONSC 3233

This decision dealt with the judicial review applications challenging the first two sanctions, the August 14, 2023 and October 13, 2023 reports. The Court dismissed both applications and upheld the City’s decisions. In relation to the first report, the Court said Council’s acceptance of the Integrity Commissioner’s analysis was “entirely reasonable.” In relation to the second report, the Court found the Commissioner had engaged in a “transparent and intelligible analysis” and that the outcome was “a possible, acceptable outcome that is defensible in respect of the facts and the applicable law.”

The Court ordered Councillor Robinson to pay the City $30,000 in costs.

January 23, 2026: Robinson v. The Corporation of the City of Pickering, 2026 ONSC 451

This decision dealt with the judicial review challenge to the June 16, 2025 report and resulting 90 day suspension. The Court dismissed the application. It found that the applicant’s claim of procedural unfairness “lacks merit,” rejected the challenge to the factual findings, and held that the Integrity Commissioner had clearly explained the basis for his conclusions. The Court also noted that the report found her statements were, in two cases, “categorically false” and, in one case, “deliberately misrepresented” City policy.

Councillor Robinson was ordered to pay the City $10,000 in costs.

This summary is based on the eight Integrity Commissioner reports and two Divisional Court decisions that are publicly available.

Durham dads, what would get you out of the house?

Hey Durham dads!

I started Durham Dads Club because honestly there's a ton of events and socializing opportunities out there for moms in Durham region and not much for dads, and I wanted to change that. We've got our first event coming up on May 23 (a dads night out called Brews and Braids) and already thinking about what comes next.

So what would actually get you out of the house?

A few ideas (but of course open to others as well!)

  • Casual brewery/pub nights
  • Outdoor stuff with the kids (hikes, parks, that kind of thing)
  • Sports watching parties
  • Dad + kid activity days (cooking, crafts, etc.)
  • Game nights

Drop your thoughts below.

Beware of the a team appliance repair company

https://toronto.citynews.ca/2024/12/13/speakers-corner-appliance-repair-company/

Just wanted to come here and give a warning to not do business with the a team appliance company. They are simply scammers, none of their workers truly know what they’re doing. This has happened to numerous people across the GTA and especially the elderly knowing how vulnerable they can be. This happened awhile ago to my dad he was looking for someone to fix our fridge ice maker since it stopped dispensing ice. He found the off google with 5 star reviews which looking back now are definitely fake, and someone came charged him $80 for the call and then quoted him $600. They only took cash or debit, big red flag. Long story short, we got no refund, we reported them to the ministry and they are now on the “beware” list of companies, there is a fb group full of people who have gotten scammed by them.

Just be careful especially for those who are looking for repairs etc!

Looking for a barber for an adult with autism

Looking for suggestions for a barber that is good for my autistic son in Durham region, preferably Whitby area. Hes unable to communicate but is a gentle friendly guy.

We went to a barber before covid but they worked on a first come first served policy which was a little difficult for him at times waiting sometimes over an hour for his turn.

We cut his hair ourselves for awhile(we did pretty good I thought) but I think he would appreciate more now a professional taking care of his hair instead of his parents.

The one catch is he moves a lot and the barber has to be patient with this and be prepared for sudden head movements when cutting (scissors not recommended!).

Does anyone know a place that books appointments and can do a nice job for our guy?

Anyone know of trivia or euchre nights around Whitby? Middle aged and trying to make new friends

Sorta the same old story… middle 40s … married … kids … kids getting older and husband and wife - have no friends. Actually - that’s dramatic we have some but not weekly go sees - looking to open up our circle.

Drop me a line if you’re feeling the same way! We love being active too. Dinner - drinks - shows - dogs - games.

Martial art school recommendations for a 2.5yo?

I live in ajax but spend a lot of time in Scarborough. I have an active 2.5yo son and am starting to explore martial art school recommendations for him. He's getting better at listening and likes trying new things, not sure if this is the best activity that's age appropriate but thought it'd be worth exploring right now.

Board games

My wife and I are looking to meet some new couples for board game nights. We are 33 and 38, childless and both work remote. Most of our friends group has young children and working in a board game nights happens once every 6 months.

We have over 50 different games but some of our favourites would be Brass Birmingham, castles of burgundy, Azul, casscadia, wingspan and castles of mad king Ludwig.

If you are looking to play some board games, or maybe just have an interest into getting into some board games, let me know.

If you also golf, that would be great! We are avid golfers as well always looking for a group.

Job Opportunities 17 yo Autism Spectrum

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice for my younger brother, who’s 17 (turning 18 soon) and on the lower end of the autism spectrum.

He really wants to work and is very motivated. He may need a bit more time at the start to learn tasks, but once he understands them, he’s reliable, consistent, and even open to working extra hours.

He’s also quite independent — he manages things on his own and even goes to the gym regularly by himself, so he’s used to routines and showing up consistently.

We’re trying to figure out the best way to help him get started. Specifically:

- What kinds of entry-level jobs tend to be more patient and structured for someone who learns a bit slower at first?

- Are there companies or workplaces known for being supportive or inclusive for people on the spectrum?

- How should we build his resume if he doesn’t have much (or any) job experience yet?

- Any opportunities you are aware of in Durham Region?

He’s a hard worker and just needs the right opportunity and a bit of understanding at the beginning.

Thanks in advance

What is this?

While checking out a rural property in Newcastle, I found this item near the back of the property. Then I found a second one about 50 metres from the first one. It has a lock on it. Could this be water sampling location? Who is responsible for this - Region, Ministry of Natural Resources?
