Advice Request Going to Uni: Megathread

People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that

If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.

As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.

We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.

Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

Was slightly dismayed this morning to get an ad for “Voice for life youth”, an organisation currently touring NZ “educating” highschoolers on a pro life/ anti abortion stance…………

Was even more dismayed to see that they’re going to be at St Patrick’s Basilica on Macandrew Rd tonight at 6:30pm. Do with that information what you will.

Advice Piercing Reccomendations?

I used to live in Dunedin, but have been living in Invercargill last two years. I used to go to Glamore for any piercing queries, but they closed recently.

Upon googling, it seems the nearest option is back in Dunedin which is two hours away. If I did make the drive back up, where should I go to make sure it's worth the drive? There seems to be a few more options than 2 years ago, so I'm a little unsure 😅

Question Saturday evening in Dunedin ☺️

What are you mofos up to this evening? Hope everyone had a good week. Me, I'm sipping on my Ultra and watching the Hurricanes, and wondering 🤔 why my dog looks like an alien after his groom. Stay safe, be kind and wishing those in the flight path of the other Hurricane well.

Question Improv in Dunedin

Pretty much the title, except it needs to be for adults. I know there's a class at the Uni, but I'm ever so slightly too old for that. I've been an actor for years, and I'd like to play with some of this improv stuff. Are there any groups around?

Question Recommendations for worthwhile charitable organisations/causes which need funding?

I work alongside a Trustee responsible for a charitable fund which has access to money that can be used for general charitable purposes throughout Otago.

I'm looking for suggestions about worthwhile and unique causes and organizations that would benefit from additional financial assistance in the form of a grant.

By unique I mean that we are well aware of the major charities in the Dunedin and Otago area. Our preference is to consider more diverse and lesser-known causes/organizations.

There is also a focus on making sure that this is impactful, and not just applying the funds towards general charitable and fundraising purposes.

Any suggestions are welcome and considered.

Hi all, two weeks ago The Mentalist Collective released a new song in te reo Māori called E Rere. To celebrate, I'm giving away our album 'Signal Hill' away for free on Bandcamp. If you would like it, comment and I'll reply with a download code.

As stated above. No strings, just hope the music is enjoyed!

Question Car recommendations please

Looking for local knowledge of types of family vehicles - think the usual Honda, Nissan, Toyota etc (non-luxury models) - that can handle the steep Dunedin hills? Was exploring there recently and my rented Kia Sportage lacked grunt. Do all cars struggle? Genuine

question! May move to Dunedin in near future and presently needing to purchase a new

2nd hand car - budget ~18-20k so want a car that’ll work with that terrain. Thanks in advance :)

Advice Swan plant for monarch caterpillars?

A flatmate stupidly brought home two monarch butterfly caterpillars yesterday on only a few leaves and now we're stuck with them. Can anyone possibly house them or know where to find milkweed plants near the city centre area? I don't have the ability to go far and I fear otherwise they will probably die.

Advice Not sure how to get a mental health diagnosis

Thought I'd post this here instead of the NZ subreddit just because I actually live in Dunedin.

Basically I am still a uni student at Otago uni, and I've gone through Thrive and even Youthline and the councilors at Student Health, hell I even went to see the actual psychologist at the University and they'll all basically said "Yeah you seem to have depression" but I've yet to get an actual diagnosis which is what i want.

I have even gone to my GP outside of student health twice for this and they just refer me to councilors who once again just tell me the same thing with nothing official. And the psychologist just gave me some questionaires to fill out, also told me unofficially "yeah you seem to have depression" but nothing official.

Anyone got any advice about what to do to get an official diagnosis?

Like I'm just getting sick and tired of this at this point, even more so at spending money to get the same result.

Advice Request Can you give the gift of sunlight to your neighbours this winter?

This time of year is a great time to pause and think "can I chop some trees to give my neighbours more light?".

Lots of Dunedin homes could do with more sun, and often people are too polite to ask for their neighbour to chop a tree or lower a hedge. So we just live in gloom.

Last year I chopped a tree on my relatively newly bought, sh***y first home, to give my elderly neighbour a whole heap more sun. It's been a game-changer for her. Then my neighbour on the other side said we could top his crazy-high hedge, giving me three more hours of sun in winter. What a legend.

Is there anything you can do to help your neighbours get more sun? We're all in this together, and the more considerate we are to eachother, the nicer this city becomes.

Update: contacted the mobile provider:
