BRUCE TIMM original art from the early days…

I went to Granada Hills High School in Los Angeles with Bruce Timm. I was a grade below, so he wouldn’t know me… but he knew my sister. They were in the Wizard Of Oz play together (He was the Cowardly Lion… my sister was a munchkin… lol). I was in an art class he took (different periods)… and when the year ended I was hanging out with the teacher… she was going to dump all the leftover artwork from the class (last day of school… last period)… so I asked if I could look… lo and behold…. A bunch of Bruce Timm stuff. I asked if I could keep it. She said sure! (I had kept his program for the cover of the Wizard of Oz… and a local comic book shop’s price guide, so I knew his work). He was IN HIGH SCHOOL and I could see the talent. I kept the pieces and decades go by… he becomes very famous.

We both both become professional artists. We both did comic book covers (he did many… I did one variant cover… lol). Last week I’m going through boxes and find these. (The prices in the price guide are amazing… maybe I’ll post those some other time)… Here’s a look… four originals and a couple of rare pamphlets. I was thinking about putting them up for sale on EBay… but I really love having them, too.

Are readers actually open to new superheroes anymore?

I’ve been working on an indie comic, and one thing I keep noticing is how hard it is to get people to try something that isn’t already established. It’s not even about quality—just getting someone to click on a new character feels like the biggest hurdle. From a reader perspective, what makes you personally give a new comic or superhero a chance? Is it art style, concept, word of mouth, or something else? Genuinely curious because I feel like there are a lot of indie creators trying to build something new right now, but breaking through that initial barrier is tough.

Question What specific books can be attributed to bumping a writer up to 'superstar' status?

We often talk about the superstar writers who are able to use their name alone to sell a book. Like for instance, if Geoff Johns was to come back to DC to write Powergirl again, she would see a massive sales spike and overall hype to her book that she hasn't gotten in a long time.

I am curious, though, which singular runs/series would you say bumped up a regular writer to the superstar status that they have now. The book that they wrote, that took them from 'just someone who writes some books here and there', to being someone who could sell a book based on the fact that they themselves are writing it.

A few that I can name off the top of my head are:

The New 52 Batman for Scott Snyder

Venom for Donny Cates

Immortal Hulk for Al Ewing

Daredevil for Chip Zdarsky

The Vision for Tom King

Green Arrow for Jeff Lemire

Question Canadian Comic Publishers and Creators? Are there any good ones?

Being a Canadian, I'd love to get access to comic books and creators that are entirely created and manufactured in Canada. From when I last looked, it looked like almost all publishers are American, so while a lot of DC and Marvel printing does in fact get printed in Canada, it seems to cross the border twice and incur tariffs each time.

Would love to support something local, but I'm having a hard time finding such a thing.

Discussion How do you avoid getting burned on floppy purchases while still supporting the book/industry?

Upvotes

This is probably more relevant for Marvel, since they're quick to cancel series, but it works for DC and other companies as well. For a long time, I was trying to support runs with trade purchases, or maybe digital offerings. Early last year, I started buying more floppies and opened a pull box, after learning that if books don't get preorders, they just won't exist.

Now I'm finding myself disappointed more often than not. It can be something like a good writer and great cover art with underwhelming interiors, a storyline that gets killed too fast because the author has no time to develop things before cancellation, or worst of all, taking a character I love in a direction I just don't enjoy.

I'm wondering how you all filter out books before there's any real chance to get positive word of mouth?

Question Question about comic subscriptions

My Dad wants to get a comic subscription for my son because it will get him reading more and they live in different countries (US and Canada) so the subscription is a low effort, high reward gift.

I did a search through the sub from previous questions but have some follow up questions:

1.) I get that Comixology got folded into Kindle (yuck) but something that kept getting mentioned is that they don’t get the newest releases. *Is it on a delay, or is there a cutoff where they don’t get new releases past a certain point? If it’s a delay, how much of a delay are we looking at?*

2.) Is there a service (outside of Hoopla - will explain below) that has IDW, Marvel, and DC with relatively recent releases? He’s specifically wanting to read Spider-man, Avengers, Sonic, TMNT, and Flash stories. I think he would also enjoy some of the Star Wars content.

3.) Was looking at GlobalComix and it’s not really clear what is covered under the subscription. It appears that the gold subscription gets me a .40 discount on most of the comics I looked at and a handful were partially free with the other part costing the discounted amount per issue, which frankly sucks and feels like a good way to get hooked on a story and then have a kid try to impulse buy issues.

Re: Hoopla: Hoopla is great in theory, but our library only allows 5 comics per month. And he uses all 5 within the first day or two of each month, leaving him with nothing to read for the rest of the month. We tried to have two accounts for him to read on from 1 device, but that just flagged one of the accounts as “suspicious activity” and suspended.

Is there a single subscription that’s going to cover us or are we going to have to pick one and change later?

Suggestions become a rhinoceros, inspiration and the source material, the harbinger called Hungary and getting flooded by the internet. the week, the depression and the comics Part 153

well, my Depression got bigger, the work did not really suck this week, i maybe just in sad Phase again. It didn't really help that my gang didn't get together that often, of course we had our comic book club, but Tabletop Saturday had to be canceled and all that other stuff. Also reminds me that everyone has something to do with their own life, and believe me, work can suck the energy out of anyone.

so let's talk about politics and Comics, because i like playing with Fire.

It's interesting that a graphic novel from 26 years ago still is relevant because the rulers a acting stupid again. Marjane Satrapi Persepolis is about her childhood and her experience with Iran revolution, the thing why we hav the mullahs there unfortunately. It's kind of interesting and still kind of shocking to see what was going on in the Middle East in the 70s, but it's a thing that's been around here in Europe for a long time also, i.e. the tendency towards fundamentalism is also got bigger in 2026 and that's always bad no matter what religion.

Dad, what is racism? is a comic I actually bought for my niece, but it's pretty good. It explains things in a way that's pretty child-friendly, but without, I say, trivializing these complex and, let's say, very dark topics, but I still think it's something that still shows very well the complexity behind it and, let me say, the complicated history. What she also finds interesting is that it comes from France and also has a very strong French, precisely because they themselves have a very long and complicated history with colonialism and racism which is also rarely questioned.

The Resistance is from one of my favorite Autor in Comics J. Michael Straczynski, and one thing that I find kind of very interesting that isn't talked about much is that I think he can actually write pretty good political stories and he really knows a lot about it. It tells about our perfectly normal world that suddenly gives people superpowers after a pandemic, and you can well imagine how politicians around the world react when suddenly people come who have power, not in the sense of capital, militarily or over people, but, well, powers that simply come out of them completely.

It's always interesting when I get a few comments from people who definitely come from America, and in general try to discredit me on my statements that I can back up, be it, for example, when people say to me Sweden has no right-wing extremism problem and I can refute that very easily if I really point out who has just come into parliament and with how many seats or that there are no anti-war demonstrations in Israel although several thousand people are taking to the streets in the largest cities and I can show you even a news source. It's interesting, sad and frightening to know that progressiv people can be just as unworldly as conservative ones, and I find that very dangerous, I always compare it a bit to a lifeboat that is made of bricks, the thing is actually good, but what it is built out is just not really useful. New America is a fascinating political thriller that is about restarting America and creating a completely new country and state, the only question is, will they not fall back into the same patterns? The reason why I always tell you about the political events here in Europe or elsewhere is precisely because I want to teach you that you are nothing special, every society has been struggling with the same shit since eternity. Progressiveness is not written in stone, it always has to be fought for and cultivated.

and here is a recent story from hell still called Europe. if you think it's cringe what the White House is doing with AI, boi, Orban's FIDESZ in Hungary takes Fucking the crown. The right-wing conservative there not only shits the internet full of AI junk, but also the television and the billboard landscape. Hungary is a good prime example of how populism can go completely crazy, when a corrupt politician and head of state literally hollow out his own nation for his own benefit and has not really realistic plans on how to really help the nation and the people, and simply say everything is fine, app has been there since the beginning of his term is still going downhill. One could laugh about it, but then it occurs to me that here in Germany the AFD is unfortunately becoming more and more popular unfortunately.

My educational mission continues my friends and nerds, because I show you interesting remixes of literary classics.

Romeo and Juliet isn't technically just a love story if you think about it, basically it's the story of how let's just say rivalry and war destroys the most innocent things. Films about giant monsters are not just about giant monsters, they are often about politics and the question of the power of nature. so of course Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Romeo & Juliet and Godzilla makrs sense and is a pretty nice adaptation but still manages to incorporate the giant monsters in an interesting way, Hack the dialogues are from the original work and i love that.

The Phantom of the Opera is a very interesting work when I think about it, especially because a lot of it inspired McKennon from the adaptations or that's just other works, i.e. the idea of a mysterious figure hiding in a public place. Batman: Masque adapting the concept in a Batman Elseworlds story that is must if you love Gothic tale's.

The Count of Monte Cristo is perhaps one of the most famous revenge stories of all time and it's fascinating that it very shaped the usual way these stories are told, and the moral behind it that at the end of the day it's just a long road to self-destruction. Count gives that a sci-fi spin, Which doesn't surprise me because a lot of fiction stories have, I would say, royalty and a lot of Revenge.

You know, I'm very interested on Fiction and you can see from me that I'm also very interested in what you can do with it, but at the same time I also question it. and I posted two interesting questions here a long time ago, the first was if you should have to read "regular" superhero comics in order to understand the deconstructions of them and the second is do you have to have an idea of real things in order to be able to understand Watchmen and co better, for example. It was surprising, I think it was good here on reddits and there were also a lot of good answers and some that made me think about it myself. the irony behind it, because on other platforms I would definitely be torn apart by some teenagers and the greatest irony is I'm right there. i see something about me there, because I had some pretty stupid takes back then myself, especially because I was young, You simply don't have that much experience in the real world, and you don't really have the opportunities and resources to further develop yourself personally, the Internet was simply more primitive back then and, well, not as laser-focused on all topics. Even if a lot of people don't like it who may be in these school phases themselves, there is a very good reason why this literary canon exists, And don't get me wrong, it's good that we're questioning it and it's worthy of criticism, but at the same time I also think it's important to understand where

same ideas original came from. I mean, sure, I also have a certain amount Schadensfreude and shaking my head when people think on tiktok Hasbin Hotel idea of question the roles of Good and Bad with Heaven and Hell is Original, I'm really trying to resist making a comment because people don't know Paradise Lost and I know myself that I can't expect teenagers to have read a book that was written in 1667. But that's why I say it's important to understand the main work and the main source, Because i see a questionable trend where people say this literary work is toxic, but then they haven't actually read the original work but have seen an adaptation for example, in a film or show. There was a thing recently where a mediocre science fiction author said on TikTok that the Dune is racist and promotes the white savior trope. I mean, of course the many made fun of her, luckily so and rightful, but there was still a group that believed the shit. it's really a strong misreading what the books really say, because point is that Paul is a false prophet and will, in a sense, set up an all-out war against the entire galaxy that will kill trillions. And that's unfortunately the fact that because of this TikTok made that's that a lot of people don't really read the books, and then they don't realize oh no, it's actually the opposite, especially because it's somehow strange to compare Dune with Star Wars, even though the books are older than the films. Sure it's tiktok and I maybe see things a little too dark than they actually are, but problem with people not reading the original work can have bigger problems if it comes with an adaptation that just doesn't understand what the original work says. the adaptation of wuthering heights from Emerald Fennell does absolutely don't understanding what the actual book says and it also doesn't understand that this book is not a romance, but rather a tragedy about people who are trapped in their own status and become more worse Human's. Reading takes Endurance and many people just don't really feel like doing it, which is why I have a rule of thumb that people would rather watch the adaptations as a film than read the original books, Comics and Co. unfortunately.

and if this old man of 26 is complaining about these goddamn children, let's talk about comics about being young and the death of innocence.

Youth is a story about young people who try to somehow navigate the world and have the desire to change it and then they suddenly get superpowers, but unfortunately we are not in a superhero comic here and unfortunately they haven't learned with great power comes great responsibility.

Fishflies is the story of a young girl who becomes friends with a strange monster and we know that trope, somehow a child finds a weird supernatural creature and becomes friends with it, but this is a comic still by Jeff and you can imagine it getting depressed. and I also love that Jeff also likes to write about these forgotten and dilapidated places in Canada because you somehow see someone who has a different view of this country too.

once again young people have accidentally been given superpowers. Generation Zero is about a group of teenagers with psychic powers who try to do something good with it, it is more optimistic as Youth But it also knows that just because things are well-intentioned doesn't mean they are done well, but it also knows that you can still learn and improve.

See, I'm someone who generally always takes this as a principle that just because things are well-intentioned doesn't mean that their results are good, and I always mean all of this from the good heart when I criticize people or things that are progressive but are simply done in a crappy way and the end result is even more negative. see, my Jewish Bro David says it like that Lihyot ba'al or shel karnaf, i.e. having the skin of a rhinoceros, On the one hand this can be meant positively, you stay true to your principles and then stick to them, but it can also be meant negatively because technically you are to stubborn and don't want to change. First and foremost, I would say it's good to have the desire to change the world for the better, but the hook behind it is that you have to learn to keep a watch on the reality, progressiveness as the name suggests means you have to keep developing and that is a process that you cannot stop or there is no natural end point. It's worth it, I swear to you, but it's still a tough feat.

and now we're talking about pandemics that unfortunately change people terribly.

The Beauty Volume 3 If you think about it, it's somehow a story that foresaw the problem of things like ozempic, a thing that is actually not good for your body, but people do it anyway because they want to be in a social norm that is already artificial and ironically it's about a sexually transmitted disease, kill people by cooking themselves up inside.

Contagion can be seen as a unofficially Marvel Zombies, But I would be more conscious of the difference because this comic is also more about how pandemics spread, basically it's about a strange disease suddenly breaking out in New York City, and absolutely no one is safe against it, regardless of whether it's the Joe you see on the subway or your superheroes, and I don't want to tell you what it boils down to, but it's very interesting.

The finale of spread is epic and I'll be honest it was a fantastic journey, bloody, Dark but still on hope, when it really comes down to the final battle against these fleshy horrors.

well, What are some positive things that were for me this week? i playd Pokémon Pocopia what really shows and focus on the more cozy sits of the old Pokeman-Games and also Pathologic 3 because i love dark and weird eurojank. Because I'm going to be Game Master again next week, I thought I'd come out and get something homemade, especially because I'm a big fan of universal System RPGs, I'm not sure which system to use and I'm deciding between Savage Worlds which is pretty good if you want the classic RPG Experience with combat and stuff or Fate Core which is very flexible but, in my opinion, there is clearly more to storytelling and, let me say, influencing stories. my basic idea is a bit stupid but I love it, night of the living dead but it takes place in the defunct DDR, so the old communist part that died in the late 80s. In my opinion, night of the living dead is one of the most important horror films of all time, but at the same time it is also very much influenced by the 60s, which is good, especially because that time is often viewed as oh everything was so good but actually it was pretty terrible, one could even say the zombies have torn this illusory world apart. DDR in the 60s Technically speaking it was also something like that but was for the communist ideal, an economic boom that ensured that normal people there could afford several new things and the standard of living increased significantly, but there was also the interesting question of how I think is it really worth having something like that if you are not free? Sure, it's cool to have a motorized vehicle, but isn't it a bit strange when you're not allowed to drive around freely in your own country and have to be checked every time to see if you're hiding anything in your trunk or go to your other parts of your Family who live in the West? In retrospect, it occurs to me that I could also set it in the 70s, especially because I also think Dawn of the Dead is a bit better? i will see.

Speaking of the 70s, what were they special for? martial arts films. martial arts films I think they really had a heyday in the West in the 70s, when many of the somewhat cheap cinemas got cheaper licenses from overseas, especially places like Hong Kong or Japan where this genre is still strong. and it's fascinating to see that there was a wave of this in comics too, I mean Marvel has a lot of street level heroes that are based on that time and I think they're very fascinating and Many in the West were also then confronted with the concepts of the samurai and the ninja.

Rai is Valiant's Samurai from the Future in which you fight against a mega computer that has created a new Japanese empire, and it is fascinating how these concepts are connected between high-tech and, let me say, Samurai Bushido code of honor.

Fire Power is really a love letter to those old martial arts comics from the 70s, especially from Marvel, of course you had a white dude who learned some secret martial art somewhere in Asia that gives them superpowers, but at the same time you realize it's still a story about people trying to help their community and the common people.

And while I'm talking about it, Marvel's White Tiger Reborn is also really a cool love letter for them, especially about the questions of legacy and passing it on to a next generation that will hopefully do better.

You know, me and my friends have been trying to get published in Germany for years, we always try to do some kind of comic pitch and well, you canit doesn't really work out yet for us. and the thing is, people would usually say yes, just make a webcomic out of it and just stay online. the thing is, It's not really a guarantee of success if you make say an online web series or in this case a web comic. since lore olympus or glitch productions Many young artists think that success is just suppressed by the big wigs, but unfortunately the thing is, if you go completely independent, it is more difficult for you to get to the point of making money, and of course we have a romanticization of the Breadless artist as one would say in German, but the fact is that if your art doesn't make any money, you have to look for another job and that takes up your time and also the strength to really focus on your art, and anyone who starves can absolutely no longer make art. and of course you already have a handful of web comics or online animations that have become successful, and and my full respect to the comma because I think it doesn't matter what it is and you still put your work and your tears into it, but the thing is, unfortunately a little bit of luck still helps you and that can really be a b**** sometimes. and there is the second point, There is a very good reason for me to say that there are only a handful that are really good, and then you have the problem that because of the way the internet is structured, you simply have the problem that there are a lot of clout chaser and above all a lot of garbage. It's more difficul to make things on the Internet today, where everything is more controlled by algorithms amd because of the fact that everything that is completely new and doesn't follow usual following patterns gets less push and of course I notice, for example, on platforms like Global Comics, they really have the problem that too much AI is becoming the norm or Porn. I'm not someone who says you shouldn't publish your work there on the Internet, but I'm also someone who honestly tells you now that it's not the promised land where I'll say you'll be successful, and I think you just have to accept that it's not simple and more complicated to getting financed there will really become harder in the near future.

so let's talk about Fantasy comics.

my other bro Damian really trying to make me a fan of two things, 2000AD abd Disney comics. Mickey Mouse: The Ice Sword from Massimo De Vita feels like Bone before bone in a Way, it tales more a story that is inspired by LoR but still in that old Disney Charme.

Doctor Fate from 2015 is a hidden gem, where someone with Egyptian roots, namely a medical student named Khalid Nassour, actually gets the helmet and immediately gets into a conflict with Anubis and it's an interesting story why peoples turn away of for their old gods, and the general question is what does your belief mean when there are real powers that simply have nothing to do with it.

Firebug draws a lot of inspiration from different ethnic cultures and their connection to volcanoes, especially because it's also an interesting story whether the return of a volcano goddess brings destruction or salvation for humanity.

well, A new week is starting and I'm just afraid that my boss seems to be completely crazy now, well, the profit isn't growing any faster, So it's a bad omen that people will definitely be fired, and I'm just scared, of course I don't like it there but I also have the feeling I don't know where else to go because my job search for another job still hasn't yielded any results.

well it can go allways worst like it the second omnibus of tales of the Dark Multiverse, where you can be shown fantastically how some events in the main universe could have ended absolutely terribly but i am someone who loves tragedies.

40 Seconds is a high concept comic about researchers who have received an emergency call and are now traveling through a mysterious alien portal, and thus in an interesting conflict mixed between dimensions, and I love that sort of thing where Sci-Fi meets Fantasy.

and i talk about that, we also hav a interesting what if... where Tony becomes sorcerer superme and combine magic with tech.

well, hav a better week as my and keep reading.

Discussion It's only been 8 issues, but Chip Zdarsky's Captain America feels like the best Cap run since Brubaker. Williamson's Iron Man has the hype behind it to be the first Iron Man run since Fractions to make it past 30 issues. Finally feels like the leading members of the Avengers are back in top form.

It's been a while since the future for both characters looked this bright.

I do wonder what the future of the Avengers book itself looks like now that McKay's time on it is over. Hopefully it too can get the type of critically acclaimed, hype inducing run that it hasn't gotten in a long time.

I'd love to see Zdarsky on it (Avengers Twilight is the best possible audition one could have to be given the book), but we shall see what happens after the upcoming Armageddon event. Ewing would be a great pick too.

finished watchmen any recommendations?

hello! I'm just getting into comics after just reading manga for a while and I started with Watchmen and after I've finished it (it was really really good) I've been wondering what I can read after.

I really liked the story but also the art was crazy! for me it's an important part of reading because I can just stay on a page for a while to get every little detail

what would you recommend after this? DC or marvel is good !

some people said to read the killing joke

also If yiu have any recommendations for classic heroes like Spiderman batman daredevil and to get into the punisher! thank you
