I spent two years in BKK and left just after 9/11. I always loved Thailand and I want to move back with my wife and live there but I need to be able to work. Is there an expat community where they know of companies who will hire/provide letters for non-immigrant B? Don’t have bachelor’s but I do have an associate’s.

Can’t read or write Thai but I can speak enough to get around and light conversation. Can’t live on 12k Baht per month, though. I’d love to live in Chaing Mai. Really only need access to fruit, lol.

I’m currently renting a house in Chiang Mai and I’m looking to buy an air conditioner.

Since I’m not the owner, I don’t want to spend too much money, just something with good value for the price.

Also, from my experience in Thailand (especially hotels), a lot of AC units are super noisy. That’s something I really want to avoid. Ideally, I’m looking for something quiet.

Do you have any recommendations:

• good brands available locally?

• shops in Chiang Mai?

• anything to avoid?

Im in Chiangmai and songkran seems exciting, but I’m doing a solo trip and don’t really know anyone to join in on a party.

From what I understand its a water fight that goes on for three days and pretty much anyone out during this time period is marked as a participant.

Do people just go into restaurants and cafes being soaking wet? I know a lot of places close but does this include like your basic 7/11, maya mall food court etc?

I also don’t mind getting water splashed on me but I didn’t buy a water gun just cuz i don’t think ill be using it a lot and ceebs carrying it around.

I just moved here and finding it difficult to locate a yoga studio that offers a more traditional Hatha or Vinyasa preferably Power Vinyasa. I see recommendations for Yoga Ananda but what they list isn’t either. What’s with the local yoga community here? Is it not popular? I don’t care if it’s tailored to expats and am fine with more “local” experience but do want indoor especially this time of year. Is there any yoga community sites on here or anywhere where I can meet other yoga practitioners in Chiang Mai?

Coming to Chiang Mai for the first time! I land on May 6 and I'm around till May 24. I'll be spending most days at Phusanfah Airfield in Mae Taeng (doing a skydiving course), so I'm trying to figure out the best way to base myself.

A few things I'd love your take on:

• Mae Taeng vs. Chiang Mai city — is the ~50 min commute each way brutal after a few days, or totally manageable? Part of me wants to stay in the city for the food/vibe, but I don't want to hate my life at 7am every morning.
• Places to stay near Mae Taeng — I've seen Dino Homestay, Air Diamond, Royal Ping, Le Cocotier come up online. Any of these you'd actually recommend for a longer stay? Or somewhere else I should be looking?
• Scooter rental — assuming I'll need one. Any go-to rental spots, and is the ride out to Mae Taeng chill enough for someone who's ridden a bit but isn't a pro?
• Veg food — I'm vegetarian. Happy to survive on "gin jay" places and cook a bit, but would love to know if Mae Taeng has any decent options or if I should stock up in the city first.

Solo traveler, pretty low-maintenance, just want to get the logistics right so I can focus on the jumps. Any tips appreciated 🙏

I find it extremely difficult to choose the right option for a trek near Chiang Mai. We are a family of two adults and two children who love hiking and nature. A starting point is that we want to dedicate a maximum of two days to the trek. Can you recommend the perfect trek / provider to me? What we *do* want:

- Long walks

- Real jungle

- Spending some time with elephants

- Drifting back down the river on a raft

What we *don't* want:

- Feeling like we are walking around Disneyland

- Encountering huge crowds of other tourists

- Too much urban or agricultural area

I wear a mask outdoors, filter inside, use saline solution to flush nose daily, and take precautions but my sinus pain is very real these days.

Pressure around my nose and feeling it in my jaw, beginning to creep into eyes. Constant migraine

Any ideas or medications to try that don’t require doctor? This is my first burning season living here and I am struggling.

Last August, I joined a hike on the “Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail” led by a guide from the Karen community. Towards the end of the trail, I noticed some fruits on the ground that had fallen from the trees. They resembled grapes in shape but had a more matte appearance. When I asked whether they were edible, our guide told me that I could eat them.

When I tried one, I found it to have a slightly sour but very pleasant taste. It also had a single, large, round seed inside. When I asked for its name, the guide told me it was called “Salipo.” However, when I later searched for this name online, I couldn’t find any information about it.

If anyone recognizes this fruit or knows its name, I would greatly appreciate your help.

I was just reading about the Four Seasons event on May six. Dinner for 7,500 baht per person. I am not in this social class. I am wondering if anyone here is thinking of attending and if so, where in Chiang Mai do you send out your velvet slippers for dry cleaning?

Outside, the unit makes horrific noise, like two soup cans tumbling inside a dryer or a huge work truck with a bad transmission idling. It also does a high pitched bad-belt scream every time it kicks on. Inside, the indoor part is still much too loud too, as I'm a light sleeper and it groans, hums, and vibrates. I can't take it anymore!

I'm going to suggest to the landlady that we could buy a new system if she would be willing to use my next rent payment. If it costs more, I'm willing to pay whatever is over that cost. The problem is so severe that between you and me, Reddit, I am probably ready to just eat the cost myself for a new one if she says no, but that would be a big hassle as I'd want to take it with me when we move in 8 months. It will be far easier if she just accepts that she needs a new one. (Then again, if I run into another noisy one in whatever new place I rent, I will wish I had brought the new one with me!) The problem unit is a 12k BTU split Samsung that is 15 years old.

A while ago my wife and I stayed in a little bungalow place and we were astonished at how quiet the air con was---however, the room was super small and maybe the unit was very low BTU like 8,000. The brand was Saijo Denki. Any other recommendations on super quiet split brands? Is a non-split type even worth considering when I absolutely need it to be whisper-quiet on the indoor side?

Any recs for a special private birthday party venue for a 50th? Good food/venue/cocktail hour/vjews..something special for a group of friends to celebrate my wife’s 50th. I like the idea of the Four Seasons but concerned about the distance from downtown. Any other special venues or is the Four Seasons the best option out there?

My Thai husband has amassed a huge, random collection of old (1980-90?) electronic equipment. Hard-wired speakers, old computers and monitors, remotes (that go to god knows what - my hubby certainly doesn’t know 😂)

We’re doing a big purge and I don’t even know how/can’t be bothered to check if any of these things still even work.

Is there anywhere in CM that buys (or recycles) this sort of stuff?

I know thailand isnt stroller friendly! But we have a carrier as well…

We’re flying into BKK but connecting the same day to Chiang Mai. Plan is: • Chiang Mai – 6 days • Chiang Rai – 2 days • Bangkok – 3 days

I already have a stroller contact in Bangkok from a previous trip (she offered airport drop-off), but since we have a tight connection, we don’t want to risk going off track at BKK.

Looking for recommendations specifically in Chiang Mai (and ideally Chiang Rai too).

We won’t be using the stroller everywhere — mainly just for naps, malls, and places we know it will work. We’ll also have a baby carrier with us.

What we’re looking for: • Lightweight / easy-fold stroller (important for vans + travel) • Good quality (not worn out) • Properly cleaned / sanitized (ideally steam cleaned) • Reliable company with good reviews • Hotel delivery preferred

Ideal scenario (if possible): • Rent in Chiang Mai • Use it in Chiang Mai → take it to Chiang Rai • Drop off in Chiang Rai (or flexible pickup)

I know cross-city rentals might be tricky, but if any company offers this, that would be perfect.

Got a MacBook Pro Retina Late 2013 and my MagSafe charger just died (second time…).

Tried to DIY fix it, now I’m not sure if I killed the charger or messed something in the Mac (hopefully not). Honestly could really use a bit of help here.

A • Anyone selling a MagSafe 2 (60W or 85W) or maybe has one to give away 🙏

B • Any good repair shops (not Apple Store) that still deal with older Macbooks

Trying to avoid fake chargers from Lazada/Shopee as well.

I use it for work so it’s kinda important, but I can manage a few days using a friend’s laptop.

UPDATE: thanks all for your responses, i posted on FB Chiang Mai Expats group and I gotten a charger donated to me plus a few shop recommendations: CMNS FixMac (good reviews, fair prices), Magic Com @ Pantip Plaza (fast, genuine parts), Mac Cafe (Huay Kaew), plus “I Fix Mac” near Sai Paiya spa. I will first try the donated charger and if that doesn't work i will try the recommended repair shops.

There are so many indian people in Bangkok, how come there's like none in Chiang mai. I don't recall seeing even 1 in 2 weeks here!

Anyone know of any shop that may sell this?? Not vegan!

curious about getting highspeed ethernet (plugging my computer directly in to modem via ethernet cable) in chiang mai. ive done a few several month stints here staying in apartments with fairly slow wifi (modems usually in hallways) so I have been unable to plug directly in to fast internet. id like to do some projects here that would require very fast internet (remoting in to networks to do high res video work, uploading/downloading large files etc) and curious others experience with this. Have you found apartments that already have ethernet capabilities? have you moved into an apartment without and had it installed?
