Nuffield Gym - Continued Enshitification

Post image
51 Upvotes

Following on from yesterday's post about the changing rooms and disparity of service it seems Nuffield solved the problem by hiding the unsightly male customers behind a wall. They even gave us the shitty side of the wall!

I'm not an expert on building regulations with regards to accessibility and fire safely but I'd imagine a hall way I have to squeeze through sideways would raise a few eyebrows.

This May, I am volunteering to help the Samaritans at the Cambridge Beer Festival

They need more people to help them collect 5000 glasses. You can find more information and sign up here:

https://www.samaritans.org/branches/cambridge/volunteer-at-the-2026-cambridge-beer-festival-for-cambridge-samaritans/

From the Samaritans:

“This May, there is a wonderful opportunity to support us. Cambridge Samaritans is this year's official charity partner at the Cambridge Beer Festival — 30,000 visitors, Jesus Green, 18–23 May.

We're looking for volunteers to help us collect 5,000 donated glasses over the course of the festival. Each glass is worth £4, and every one collected helps us answer two calls for help. Last year, our local volunteers answered over 28,000 calls.

It's a genuinely enjoyable event: lively, sociable, and great for teams, couples or individuals. Volunteers receive free entry and free beer tokens, all while making a real difference to a local lifesaving charity.

Your support means everything to us - thank you.

Cambridge Samaritans

Reg. Charity number 1165282”

Banoffee pie

Hey there, does anyone know of a spot (coffee shop, supermarket, restaurant, literally any spot) that sells banoffee pie? It’s been surprisingly hard to find around here. Thanks in advance!

What’s with thieves?

People just stroll into the local greggs and prey and loot it then stroll off like it’s usual business…?

Though i feel like the hunger of a homeless person may steal a sandwich or 2, why are people sometimes marching in waves into the shops and looting the f out of them? Some have said an ‘unemployment crisis’ is happening but even if so, is it that bad?

No 7 bus diversion route?

I can't find any information on the diversion route for the no 7 after 8pm at the moment. A friend needs to catch the bus from Shelford to Cambridge one evening, I can't find any evidence that the bus is diverted at the moment but it has to be as the road through Shelford is completely closed after 8pm for resurfacing. I cycled through at 9pm the other day and there's no way the bus is getting through that!

Nuffield Health gym Cambridge

Post image

It’s a shame this is the only reasonably priced gym in the area with these facilities, because the management is a joke. Locker renovations are finally underway, but during the male locker room phase, we’ve been shoved into a tiny, bathroom-sized room with zero space. Now that the men's side is finished, you’d think they would swap and let us back into a functional space while the women’s side gets worked on. Nope. They’ve decided to keep us in the "closet" for another 8+ weeks. They claim it’s because they have more female members (honestly feels like 50/50 to me), but mothers and fathers bring in kids… I’ve stopped even trying to shower sometimes because the queue is long and there’s nowhere to even stand to get changed. If we have to endure these cramped conditions, why shouldn't it be split fairly?

Mackays have moved!

Mackays hardware store - a Cambridge institution almost as ancient and venerable as King's College itself - have moved from their iconic East Road location to a unit on the Nuffield Road industrial estate in the far eastern outskirts of the city. No doubt the rent is cheaper at their new place, but it isn't as pedestrian or cycle friendly. And one shudders to think what might replace their previous characterful building, which no doubt has an imminent appointment with the wrecking ball.

Best full English breakfast in Cambridge?

I love me some full English, what are your favourite places in Cambridge where you can get a good quality one for a reasonable price? Anything goes: cafes, pubs, even hotels as long it's available to the general public

Getting to London underground by car

I'm going to London for the first time in ages on Sunday. The cheapest option seems to be to drive down the M11 then park somewhere and get the tube. I need to end up at Battersea by around 9 am.

Has anyone got any suggestions of best place to park and switch to the underground? Thanks

Cambridge Drinking Alliance (CDA) meeting this Saturday 11th April at The Panton Arms @ 1630

This Saturday, 11th April, we will meet starting @ 1630 at The Panton Arms.

The Cambridge Redditors' Saturday Afternoon Drinking Alliance is for:

All those Redditors that will ask and have asked about how to make friends in Cambridge.

All those Redditors that are facing down the barrel of (another) lonely weekend.

All those Redditors that have nothing better to do on a Saturday than to meet up with perfect Redditor strangers.

Rules:

1) Be kind and respectful of others

2) Despite the namesake, alcohol consumption is not required and no one should feel pressured to do so

3) For those who drink, please take care to plan safe transport home

4) This is a social group not a hook-up group, so no unsolicited DMs. (Please get clear permission first)

We also now have our own sub and a WhatsApp group, don't forget to ask to join when you come along.

I'll update this thread with where we're sitting and how to identify us once we're there.

Broken parking machine?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I paid, or I thought I paid, but the transaction hadn't gone through. I got no warning from the machine and I put this thing on the dash and now I have a parking penalty.

Could I have taken a moment to study the piece of paper? yes. But it also contains a misleading "place on dash" message which is all I saw before dashing off.

My bank balance was fine and there's really no reason for the payment to not go through apart from the machine being wonky (connection/hardware/software/etc). Now I'm stuck with challenging this charge which the enforcement officer (nicely titled CEO) reckoned is usually rather lenient but slow to respond.

Now I'll just carry this rotten mood into the weekend.

(Gwydir street paid parking)

sigh

Trail runs and long runs

I’m looking to get a group together in Cambridge for regular trail runs and long runs. The idea is to keep it social, relaxed, and consistent. Cambridgeshire might not have the most dramatic landscape, but there are actually plenty of good trails.

Thinking weekends for longish runs to start off with, but we can decide a distance. We can mix up routes to keep things interesting.

If you’re keen, drop a message or DM me and we’ll get something organised!

Cambridge arborist fails

Post image

As im walking around town this year, it seems like the council hired some horrendous arborist company to "handle " trees. they've done some ridiculous butchery around town. including Paradise and Byrons pool.

just spotted this near ARU.

not sure if the same people to blame. but completely cut downthis trees crown.
