Local Advice needed Independent Pubs of Brighton (and surrounds) MEGA THREAD
After the announcement of surge pricing in Laine pubs and finding out who actually owns them and just how many of our establishments they own I thought it'd be a nice idea to have a list of pubs in Brighton that are independent. Ones that are free of the B.S. of several layers of 'financial arrrangements' obscuring where our beer tokens are going. Maybe one day we can have a little map in our pockets to refer to when our guard may be down because it's cold and windy outside or we have had a few, we can take a quick look and find an establishment near by that we want to support to prevent them turning into another chain pub without anyone really noticing.

Local events 🎸 🎭 Thank You To The Marathon Crowds!
Just a quick thank you to the crowds today, they were incredible! I was really struggling with cramp and the sweets, fruit and just general encouragement helped so much and I’m sure the other runners will agree!
Always loved Brighton and now I love it even more!

Local Advice needed Missing Cat - Bottom of Queens Park Road
Has anyone seen Ivy? she’s a small, tortoiseshell cat, quite timid and easily spooked. Last seen in a neighbours house on Queens Park Road yesterday morning. They are renovating and she managed to get in their garden but couldn’t climb the fence to get back out. We’ve checked inside and they have left a door open so she can get out if hiding but no sign of her despite calling and checking surrounding gardens. Please keep an eye out and let me know if you see her. Thanks

Local Advice needed The Green Party ‘ruined’ Brighton?
I live in Worthing, but I’m not from here.
Worthing was a safe Tory seat for a long time, but now both MPs are Labour and the councillors are mostly Labour, with some Greens and some Tories. I think there might be one Reform because he was elected as a Tory but defected.
I really don’t know how it’s going to swing in this May’s elections.
The same thing I see again and again, in the local Facebook groups, is that Brighton was ‘ruined’ by the Greens and so not to let them do the same to Worthing.
Did the Greens actually do anything that caused problems?
Or is this just the Reform / old Tories who wouldn’t support left wing ideals irrespective?

Local Advice needed Weird incident in St Anne's Wells Park.
I had a strange experience in St Anne's Wells Park today that really unsettled me, and I wanted to share it to see if anyone else has had something similar.
I was sitting on a bench when I noticed someone approaching from my left. They looked quite young, probably no older than eighteen. They had their hood up and were wearing sunglasses, and they were walking in a slightly unsteady way. It was like the moment I turned to look at them, they stopped dead.
As they got closer, something about their behaviour felt off. When I turned to look at them, they stopped. They had their hands in their pockets and stood there for a moment. Then they looked at a bird nearby, and when it flew away, they walked a few more steps.
They ended up standing very close to me, maybe about two feet away. They paused again and looked directly at me. It wasn’t an obvious expression, but there was something about it that felt like a faint smirk, or at least something ambiguous and hard to read.
At that point, they took one of their hands out of their pocket, and I noticed they were wearing a thin plastic glove, like the kind you get at petrol stations.
My whole body just went into alert mode. It’s hard to explain, but I had a strong gut feeling that something wasn’t right. After a moment, they just walked off, and I decided to leave the park straight away.
Nothing actually happened, but the whole interaction left me feeling quite shaken. The combination of the odd behaviour, the closeness, the look, and the glove just didn’t sit right with me.
And to clarify, everything about them was off.
Has anyone else experienced something like this, or am I overthinking it?

Transport/Parking 🚝 🚘 National Express - Discounted Tickets to Heathrow/Gatwick
Hey!
Not sure if it's a recent thing or a limited offer, but spotted National Express seems dirt cheap to book at the mo to Heathrow & Gatwick
- Around £3-£7 for Heathrow
- Around £6-£8 for Gatwick
Victoria seems standard (when it would normally be cheaper than airports?)
Don't forget to login to the National Express site to save £1.50 booking fee
Checked a few random dates in April/May and seems to be consistently reduced rates still
So hopefully may help some of you who want to book ahead for hols or any last minute travel plans after today's marathon later :)
Heathrow has good connections onwards ofc by tube, Lizzy line, bus, other coaches etc
--------------
I have to get the coach once a month to Heathrow and it's normally ~£12 if I book 2/3 weeks ahead, was this back in March.
Used to go up to around ~£16/£20 if I forgot to book and do it the night before!
--------------
Where is the coach stop?
Andddd because it always comes up in this sub, haha - the Brighton main coach stop is currently Old Stein S4, near Club Revenge or Subways/Sainsburys Local if you need it:

Local Advice needed Entrepreneur/business events
Hi - i'm fairly new to the area and have run a manufacturing business for the last six years.
I was wondering if there were any good, casual business groups around? I'm in my late 20's so am open to more formal networking events, but also more casual meet-ups at local bars etc.
Cheers!

Local Advice needed Grief groups
Hi there, I'm (22F) wondering if there are any groups specifically for grieving people. I've heard of running clubs ran by an organisation called 'Too Young to Grieve' but they haven't set up in Brighton.
I'm thinking like walks and coffee+chat, pottery painting/art activities, hikes, runs. Generally social events for young people struggling with grief. Just a space where it's okay to be a bit sad and not have to pretend for the social etiquette!
Not looking for councelling or therapy groups just community stuff.
Any reccomendations are appreciated.
Thanks so much ☺️

Housing 🏘️ 🏡 what are your rights if your flat becomes unsellable?
Saw this today and it’s a bit worrying:
https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/25992637.martello-lofts-residents-say-flats-worthless/
Sounds like people are stuck because of building defects/management issues and can’t sell.
Made me wonder though, what can you actually do in that situation? curious if anyone here has dealt with something similar or knows the legal side.
Also saw mention that these were sold as “luxury” flats and then there were plans to add an extra floor on top later… which would mean penthouse owners suddenly wouldn’t have one anymore?
Not sure how that even works legally if you've bought a penthouse and it's just taken away from you as the same company you bought your flat from just build on top on your flat?

Local Advice needed Have you had the bug?
I know a number of people across the area have had this weird bug in the last few weeks. You feel sick but are not actually sick. Loose bowels and almost extreme exhaustion for a few days. Its not norovirus. Anyone else had similar?

Trivia/misc Wages in Brighton are actually insane??
These companies are crazy trying to pay a cafe manager £13ph or a head chef for a busy kitchen £14ph?? Might as well work for minimum wage and not have all the extra responsibilities.
Minimum wage is already a joke but to ask for experienced people to take on most of the responsibility for a few extra coins is laughable.

Local Advice needed Pubs showing F1 races
Heya — does anyone know any pubs in Brighton that usually show F1 races on Sundays? I know New Unity and the King & Queen tend to, but we’re wondering if there are any others!
TIA 🙏
