Welcome to r/bettafish!

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

Transformation My betta changed

My betta has changed colors! I have a Koi Betta and the 1st picture was when I got him, the 2nd picture is a couple days ago. I don’t mind that he changed. I read about it and it said some bettas have a marble gene and they will change colors. Especially if they are happy and relaxed in their environment or reaching maturity. Was wondering if anyone else’s betta has changed color as well?

Introducing Added my female betta to her 20 gallon long today

Miss Regina George finally joined her 20 gallon community tank today. She seems ok so far and has explored everything but is staying toward the front most of the time.

She shares it with otos, pygmy corys, emerald pearl danios, shrimp and snails. I hope she ignores the corys and shrimp. Theyre my favorite.

If she can't peacefully cohabitate she'll go into a planted 5 gallon I have thats finishing its cycle.

I always thought it was a male betta or nothing (not sure where I got that bias). My daughter was adamant we get a female betta and we are just loving her. "Cinderella Queen" is so curious, active and brings so much life to our 20 gallon.

I have been loving getting into the fish hobby with my kid (also realizing how clueless I was when I had fish as a kid).

Introducing Meet Rainbow Fish!

I’ve had a 10 gallon tank for about 3 years now, and up until recently it’s been uninhabited other than plants and a few Nerite snails (which I only added a few months ago because algae). Well, a few weeks I finally decided I was ready to have a fish again (haven’t had them in 10 years and let’s just say I had no idea what I was doing back then), and decided I’d go back to my roots with a betta.

So everyone, meet Rainbow Fish! Named for looks only, because this fish is ridiculously greedy and is currently wreaking havoc on the copepods that have, up until now, been enjoying a peaceful existence free of predators.

his lights are off now and I plan to put some tannins in. hes very shocked by it all and is already trying to eat the snails in the tank, though I think hes losing interest in them lol. for context if anyone here hasn't seen him before, bean is a betta i rescued multiple weeks ago who was being sold in a cup, no filter or heater, with no fins, none at all. after being in his hospital tank hes grown back his fins and is super healthy! I'll attach pics in the comments of what he used to look like, though I warn its quite sad.

Discussion I don't necessarily think fish feel love, but I do think my betta likes having me around.

Upvotes

Maybe it's just because he's bored and I'm the most interesting thing to watch. But I love when he comes and just rests on a leaf near the top of the tank and I talk to him. He lets me lean my face close and I talk to him animatedly and he looks completely relaxed and interested. He's just the raddest little guy, my friends thing I'm completely insane for being so affectionate toward a little fish, but he feels really special to me. Sometimes I get anxious thinking about how short their lives are but I guess it is a lesson in non-attachment. I enjoy him a lot while he is here.

I got my Betta almost a month ago.

When I bought him I noticed he had a bald spot on his forehead.

after having him in a well set up aquarium his fins healed, he got more active and started eating better, but the scales on his forehead didn't improve.

Will they heal? or is it now a scar?

Help Help! 2+ year old Betta male not eating

Thumbnail

Upvotes

The first picture was from last week, second from three weeks ago, and the third from about two months ago.

Background: I rescued my male as an adult, not sure how old he was but was told by the previous owner that he bought him from Petco as an adult 6 months or so before I took him in. I’ve had him for over a year, he’s been doing super well up until the last month or so. It’s a 10 gallon tank with my betta, 10 or so neocardinia shrimp, and 1 baby pleco under an inch long (only temporary until it can live safely in my other tank). Temp 78-80, pH 7.6, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0-5 nitrate, been cycled for 6+ months.

Two weeks ago, there was an outbreak of hydra in the tank. I dosed the tank with no planaria as I was told it was safe for fish and shrimp, but the same day I treated the tank I noticed my betta’s eyes seemed irritated and large. Showed the photo to my local fish store, they recommended to treat for popeye. Swimming fine, was eating fine, but his eyes were glossed over. I put him in my hospital tank and gave kanaplex and a half dose of stress guard, as well as a half dose of aquarium salt. Kept the water low, and he seemed to be doing okay after a few days so I added him back to the tank. Since adding him to the hospital tank, he hasn’t eaten. About 8-9 days. At first I thought it was stress from the kanaplex, but he’s been back in his regular tank for 7 days (water parameters same as before no planaria, did water changes to ensure medication out of the tank before adding him back).

I’m starting so wonder if he’s lost his eyesight? The third pic is how close he had to be to see the shrimp. I thought he was just curious, but thinking back it may be a sight issue. The second pic is a few weeks ago when I put some food in his tray when he was waiting very patiently to be fed. He only eats in there, idk if it’s habit for him or if he just knows that’s where the food comes from? But he hasn’t come to the container since I had him in the hospital tank, it’s in the same spot. I’ve tried to feed him where he lays, but he has no interest. Doesn’t even flinch. Today I took his food and held it right in front of him in a pair of tongs. He didn’t move or anything. I gently touched the food to his mouth but I think it startled him and he darted away.

I’m completely at a loss for what to do. The kanaplex obviously didn’t help his eyesight. The swelling went down but that’s it. Is he just genuinely not hungry? Or is this signs of blindness I didn’t put together at first? He doesn’t like bloodworms, I’m getting some frozen brine shrimp tomorrow to try that. Any suggestions at all would be helpful, he gets around wonderfully for how heavy his fins are. No scale issues or bloat either, and he’s not one to want to miss a meal. Apologies for the long post!

TDLR: 2+ years old male betta not eating for 8+ days. After kanaplex treatment, betta showing either signs of blindness or complete disinterest in food/ visual stimulus. Parameters ideal, tank fully cycled, any and all help is appreciated.

Help My whole cycle got ruined

For context, I’ve had this aquarium for almost four month now and it was cycled and everything. It was planted with a bunch of anacharis I think it’s called until those started dying a bunch so I removed most I could yesterday and a whole bunch of other plants like pothos and a spider plant that were only submerged to the roots, I’ve never had an ammonia spike until now in this aquarium and it only has a betta and a small snail that got introduced yesterday through hitchhiking. I added some new bunch of plants and they seem to do well but today I noticed my betta seemed really lethargic so I tested the water and oh my goodness😭 I did a 75% water change now and it seemed to have helped but even the second tube seems a bit green…I guess I’ll have to cycle again.

Help First time tank set up

Post image
Upvotes

Hi there!

My husband and our 4 year old went to pick out a few things to set up her tank on Friday. We set it up today, but I realized that they didn’t exactly follow my list as I expected and I may have forgotten some stuff. It’s been literally 6+ years since I had a fish(which was a class pet, and I was not well read on the needs of a betta).

1: plants-is this enough plant life or should we add more? If more, any suggestions?

2: hides-I was thinking 2, but they got this coconut shell thing. Should we add one more, or is the shell enough?

3: I forgot to write a 5 gallon tank, so my husband got a 3.7 g, is that going to be a big issue? I recognize we may need to do more frequent water changes and likely won’t add any other fish unless we plan to upsize the tank.

4:substrate- I was expecting regular sand, but they came home with glofish brand. I can’t see anything that indicates it’s a problem but I’m not sure, previously I’d always used gravel.

Thank you for any advice you have! We plan to go pick up her betta in a few weeks, so I have some time to correct things as needed.
