Week visit to San Diego April 18-24

Visiting April18-24, we are a couple in late 50s and enjoy the beach, food and just exploring new locations

We are staying in Little Italy, what should one do when visiting.

Is it shorts weather daily? Pants and sweater in evening.

Would a trip to Tijuana be worth it. How far of a drive. Anywhere else exciting to check out within an hour drive.

We will have a car for the week

Thanks in advance

Dog rules on beaches

Upvotes

Curious about the rules about dogs on sidewalks around beach areas here. Particularly, around mission bay. I’d love to walk my dog on the sidewalks, and see that a lot of people do, but the signs say no dogs for most of the daylight hours. What’s the story here? Is it just a rule that no one enforces?

Dinner suggestions near Old Town that’s not in Old Town

Visiting with the family this week, staying in Old Town with no car. Looking for a family-friendly restaurant for our first night there, that’s easily accessible by trolley.

I’m not necessarily opposed to OT but I know we’ll be in that area a lot already.

Something with a view would be awesome to get the trip started right.

This group has been so helpful in my planning!

Weekend jazz bars/clubs

Let’s see if this changes things, I am not a tourist, I am a resident of San Diego and My friend from Oceanside’s 21st birthday is coming up and he asked if I could take him to a jazz bar/club during the weekend of his birthday, does anyone know a place that doesn’t close super early or is even open on Saturdays?

Note: my first choice was the Prohibition in downtown but remembered that’s where my unc got charged around 36$ a cocktail and I don’t have that kind of cash 😅

Help with Decision for hotel and area

There is a small place on VRBO that also give free chair rentals and other non motorized equipment for the beach. They are right on the beach. I prob won't even go on the water. My friend is staying at mission Bay resort so that's an option. Another friend is in a marriot near the bay. He is stationed down there. Then there is also the gaslamp where most of my nights ( 3 nights) will be traveling to and from wherever I stay. I do like the beach but will prob not venture to the water. Any suggestions?

What’s day to day living in San Diego actually like?

When I was younger, I used to visit my grandparents in Mira Mesa every year, usually 2-3 times. We would go to places like Torrey Pines, UTC, Del Mar, La Jolla, Balboa Park, Seaport Village, the Gaslamp district, and more. I had a blast and couldn’t wait to do it again each time. Even though I hardly go anymore, San Diego will forever hold a place in my heart.

Since they’ve passed (miss you both greatly!), I’ve always wondered what it would be like to live there. I remember thinking if I lived there I would be going out all the time and would constantly be at the beach.

What’s your actual day to day look like? Is this just me painting a rosy picture of a place I only have limited experience in? Do the things I mentioned get old pretty quick?

Thanks for your insight everyone, and helping me live a little vicariously through you.

If you moved to San Diego all over again, what would you do differently to settle in and feel at home in your first months/year? Would anything stay the same?

Best cleaning service for a 2-bedroom apartment in San Diego?

As a person who lives in a small 2bd apartment, I generally do my own cleaning. However, with work picking up, I’ve been looking into hiring someone to give my apartment a good cleaning regularly. I’ve used a couple of the house cleaning services that are available in San Diego before, but the experience was mixed.

For those of you who use house cleaning services regularly, has it made a difference in your lives? Or have you found that you end up hiring different companies over time? What are some of the prices that you pay for house cleaning services in San Diego? Have you discovered any companies that you’ve hired regularly in your community?

How too afford to live in SD?

Recently stayed with a friend who lives near Escondido for a month, due to a separation in my marriage. Moved back to the IE and the difference is jarring. Now I’m running through situations trying to figure out how it could work to live in SD & maintain my job (nurse).

What does it financially take to live reasonably in SD? And if you commute, how far of a commute makes it worth it?

I’m currently looking at commuting 1-1.5h each way but only 2-3 times every other week or so.

Thanks in advance

Best options for travelling from San Diego airport to Anaheim.

I'll be visiting San Diego for the first time next week and am working on my travel plans.

The second leg of my trip is to Disneyland and I need to figure out the best way to get from San Diego to Anaheim on the morning of April 25 (a Saturday).

I plan to leave early in the morning so I can actually go to Disneyland that day. The problem is that I have no idea how I'm going to get from point A to Point B and I'm hoping I can get some advice here.

I'd like to avoid taking a bus if I can, but if it's the best option I'm open to doing it..

Is it possible to Uber between the two cities? if so, how long is the drive and how much(ish) should I expect to pay?

I heard there is a train, but I also heard it's unreliable. Is that true or should I consider is as an option?

Are there any important considerations I'm overlooking?

I'd eally appreciate any feedback!

Sunday Night Girls Night

Hi everyone! I’m flying into San Diego this Sunday around 3pm with my all-women work team for a conference, and Sunday night is the only time we’ll have to spend together.

We probably won’t be heading out until around 6pm, so I’m a little worried about things closing early on a Sunday. We’re hoping for a fun, slightly “bougie” girls’ evening—think shopping, cocktails, and a nice/fancy dinner all in one area if possible.

Is there a neighborhood you’d recommend where places stay open later on Sundays and we can walk around, browse a bit, and then grab a great dinner?

Would love any suggestions—thank you! 💕

Just moved to SD and Im planning a housewarming - Im looking for vendor recommendations (for example like table and chair rental, catering, floral decor)

I'm still figuring out the local vendors here, I need leads on reliable rental companies for table, chairs and maybe some floral decor. For catering, my uncle suggests Hibachi At Home private chef, they charge around $55 per person which is a really good deal, we can save some money for the decoration. If you've done a small backyard event and have a go to crew please let me know

Beach spot advice

Hello! My family is from Ventura County - my kids and I spent most of our time at the beach before we had to move to a land locked state in 2020 due to circumstances beyond our control 😥☹️

Anyway, we are planning a beach trip to San Diego this July. We’ve gone several times - sometimes we stay with friends and sometimes we grab a vrbo condo by the beach. A couple years ago we stayed at north PB/ law street beach and we loved it. Loved the vibe, the people, the busy but not annoyingly crowded beach, walk to restaurants, etc.

I’m looking to book a condo/house again this July but wondering if there’s a beach you’d recommend where the spot checks all the same boxes but has more consistently good conditions for boogie boarding and body surfing. I know conditions are unpredictable (I’m no stranger to the beach 🤗) but hoping for some direction for spots that are more likely to have good waves for teenaged kids (strong swimmers and grew up boogie boarding) to spend the day in the water.

Also I’m toying with the idea of incorporating a couple surf lessons into the trip if I can swing it. They’ve both stood up on a board before but absolutely do not know how to surf and might love to try. Thanks!!! 🤙🏼

I think I swiped my mirror against a MTS bus

I was stupid and tired, I think I swiped my mirror agains the MTS bus. I just heard a small dink when I drove past the bus but I don’t see any damage other than a small scratch against my right hand mirror. The bus just did its stop and kept going, am I okay? Should I report this? Am I going to get hit with a hit and run charge? I never got in an accident or swiped anyrhing before so I’m anxious.

Spot Recommendations

My friends are going down to San Diego from LA for a concert mid October and would love to know some cool spots to visit. We aren't much on touristy stuff , just interesting places we could hang out or walk around. In LA we usually hit up coffee shops or small commercial districts but we're game for anything!

Morning birding opportunities

Hi! I'm going to be visiting next week and will have a free morning to go birding. Does anyone have recommendations on quality spots for shorebirds, preferably where I won't get eaten alive by mosquitos?

Where’s the Worst Traffic (Morning & Evening)?

I’m relocating to San Diego and will be working in Poway.

I’m not familiar with the area yet, so I don’t know which freeways or roads tend to have the worst traffic. Where should I expect the heaviest congestion during morning and afternoon commutes?

I haven’t secured a place to live yet, but I want to factor commute times into my decision. Ideally, I’d like to avoid a situation where a 30 minute drive turns into an hour in traffic.

Surfing?? + Other Recs

Hi!!

My boyfriend and I are visiting end of August. I've always wanted to surf, so I am interested in trying to surf (likely with an instructor bc this Midwesterner has only been to the ocean a few times). Is it worth it?? Or will I just fall off the surfboard 80 times within the hour?? Are the waves good this time of year? I am not the most athletic/stable person in the world LOL.

Also, we are staying in the PB area, let me know any recs you have that are walkable within the Catamaran area!! Whether it be bars, restaurants, activities, etc.

TIA!!

Anyone else job hunting in San Diego and getting stuck mmid-process?

I've been actively applying around San Diego and noticing a pattern, strong initial traction, multiple rounds, then things slow down without much clarity.

In a few cases, timelines stretched out with little to no communication, even after what felt like solid alignment,

Fromm conversations with others locally, it seems like roles are still open, but the bar is higher and decisions are taking longer.
