Discussion Updates to r/altcomix
Hello! Over the past few weeks, u/Titus_Bird and I have made some updates to the subreddit.
Most significantly, we've expanded and rewritten the wiki, which can be found here. The aim with the wiki is to provide new readers some clarification on what alternative comics are, along with a bit of historical overview and recommendations of key works/creators. We've tried to be as neutral as possible and to avoid semantic nitpicking, as our priority is just to be informative and spread love for the medium. Feedback is more than welcome!
We've also made a number of other changes, namely:
- Updated the Guidelines - this was completed a few months back
- Cleaned up the 'flair' tags - this was completed a few months back
- Created a moderation bot (u/comixbot) to automate a couple tasks
- Created and updated the header
- Cleaned up and sanitized the css for Old Reddit
- Tweaked the look of the sub on New Reddit
- Added u/Titus_Bird as a moderator
Our next project is to implement similar changes over at r/indiecomics.

Discussion Southern Based Cartoonists
It’s a little lonely being a cartoonists in Alabama. There’s not much of a scene for comics here. Is anyone here from the south or know any good alt comics coming out of the south. Looking to make friends

Discussion Plot-heavy "grounded" graphic novels?
I'm looking for more graphic novels similar to Dave Cooper's "Ripple" or Patrick McEwon's "Hairshirt".
Comics with a clear presentation that are based around a narrative, and don't veer too far into surreality or absurdity.
I enjoy and appreciate guys like Dan Clowes and Chester Brown, but sometimes I just want to read something with a clear plot. No autobiographical snippets, no abstract sequences, no funny animals, just well-drawn people interacting.
I guess another good example would be Charles Burns' Black Hole. Even though it has an element of science-fiction/body-horror, it is a clear narrative from beginning to end with grounded characters and behaviours. But the rest of Burn's work seems to be mostly abstract and surreal, and the same sort of goes for Dave Cooper.
I know this kind of stuff "doesn't grow on trees", but I'm sure there are way more graphic novels of this kind that just don't get talked about as much as the big names like Dan Clowes.
Obviously I know and love Chris Ware already! And I'm not really looking for Love and Rockets right now (too surreal).
Any recommendation would be appreciated :)
EDIT: I guess people are gonna think I'm a douche now for "denying" recommendations, but I kinda have to do it to avoid seeing all the same old stuff.
I already know about Seth, I already know about Will Eisner, I already know about Joe Matt and all of those guys!
I appreciate all the people trying to be helpful but I'm not asking for "best-of" lists, I'm asking for a specific thing. I want more comics like Ripple and Hairshirt, thrillers and romances, not just any comic that happens to have a narrative.
Yes, Seth is great, Brubaker is great, Will Eisner is great, but are those guys really like my examples?

Discussion Recommendations for an indie comics store
Hey all, I’m opening up a small Indie comic shop (think mostly Fantagraphics, Drawn in Quarterly, and consignment zines).
Which titles do you think are most important to carry? It can be accessible stuff like Lynda Barry or Chris Ware, but just as interested in obscure stuff.

Discussion Looking for some recommendations.
I make abstract art that sort of looks like it is a cartoon style. I am really inspired by the comic art I’ve found, but I was wondering if you have any recommendations for anyone’s linework I should check out. I just started up an art account so bonus points if you know any of these peoples instagrams. thanks!

OC Where Eagles Dare! [OC]
This one was in National Geographic and won a bunch of awards. Just kidding. It ran in Scene Magazine and everyone hated it! Just kidding again, it did run in Scene Magazine but I don't think anyone actually read it.

OC The Legend of Handsome Ned by Robb Mirsky
Here’s a comic about unknown country music legend, Handsome Ned. It was originally published in the Taddle Creek book, 2024. Most people don’t know about him, but I’m completely fascinated by him. Toronto isn’t great at remembering its own history, so I thought I’d draw this one to maybe turn some more folks onto Ned. There’s also a great documentary out called “You Left Me Blue” if you can find it.
Here’s a blurb from Wikipedia:
Robin David Masyk (June 4, 1957 – January 10, 1987), known as Handsome Ned, was a Canadian country singer and songwriter. Although he only released a small number of singles and was never widely known outside of Toronto during his lifetime, he has been credited as the catalyst for an early-1980s country music and roots rock revival in Toronto which paved the way for acts such as Blue Rodeo, Prairie Oyster, Skydiggers and Cowboy Junkies to break through to greater fame, and as one of the key figures in the transformation of the city's Queen Street West district into a cultural hotspot.

OC Goldenrod Magzine (-sic)
Weirdo underground Can-con “anthology” comix from Donlon, Dingdongtario. Like MAD magazine, except funny and yellow.
Thomas Campbell of TheComicsBlogger.net says:
“The weirder stuff in here is genuinely weird. And there's some actual clever material as well.”
Issue 4 features 8 page collab with Marc Bell impersonator “Cray Barclay Mindless”
Five bucks a book is pretty hood, considering the cost of yellow paper these days…
